Great read - totally kept my attention - It was full of twists and turns. The plot kept you guessing from the beginning to the end. Any mystery lovers should enjoy this book.

I really enjoyed that the book was told from multiple viewpoints as it added a layer of depth to the character development and allowed the story to gradually build in suspense. This is a book that is big on surprises and the timing of one twist is unexpected and sends the novel in a totally unforeseen direction. Not only is this book a great thriller, it is a great mystery. MacMillan is an author that improves with every book and this one propels her into the big leagues.

A fast paced read with an unreliable narrator and a weekend getaway with friends, what could go wrong?

Jayne, Ruth, and Emily are our main characters although you do hear from others and one is a mystery yet to be revealed. The one issue I had with this book is the change of characters with almost every other paragraph with no warning I found myself constantly trying to figure out who was speaking which was just confusing I did like that first twist. Wait, what ? Had to go back and read again!

I have enjoyed all of Gilly Macmillan's previous books and although I enjoyed this one, it was not one of my favorites. I did like the eerie setting and I absolutely LOVE the cover of this book, it drew me right in. I would still recommend this book to those that have enjoyed her previous work and enjoy mystery/thrillers. I look forward to seeing what this author comes up with next! 3.5 stars ~

Girly Macmillan does it again! Rich multi layered characters drive the tale of a close knit group of friends, their individual secrets and a weekend trip that doesn’t progress as planned. Atmospheric, brooding and intense, the well plotted story draws the reader in from the first page. This would make a wonderful movie or mini series!

What a great sense of place in this story - and the characters are well developed. There were enough red herrings to keep me paying attention and when the conclusion was revealed I felt outsmarted even with all the puzzle pieces there - bravo.

Jayne, Ruth, and Emily are married to three best friends. When the couples decide to go away for a long weekend Jayne suggests Dark Fell Barn, a very isolated retreat. Everyone agrees a chance to get away from it all is just what they need. The three women arrive the night before their husbands do to a note and a bottle of champagne. The note informs them that one of their husbands is dead. What happens next uncovers a twisted web of lies and deceit.

This book was full of twists and turns...that is for sure. The plot kept you guessing from the beginning to the end. BUT...it was also very confusing. The POV changed practically ever other paragraph so I found myself constantly trying to figure out who was speaking. The story grew bigger and wilder as the book continued and it seemed pretty implausible at times. The overall plot was compelling, but the execution fell flat for me.

Super enjoyable, super satisfying, but...there is a false note i can't quite put my finger on. Did I want them to be at the remote location longer? Yes. Would that have made any sense at all? No, not really. So...what's my issue here? A fun read, but, somehow, not exactly what I wanted.

The Long Weekend by Golly MacMillan is the first I've read from this author and it won't be the last. Sharp writing combined with twists that left me guessing for over half the book. I thought I knew whodunit, but I was wrong. A great, suspenseful read that doesn't have a lot of descriptive death scenes. I truly appreciate an author who can evoke an image, without resorting to blood and gore details. A great book club read.

Gilly Macmillan is up there on my list of favorite authors, unfortunately her new book The Long Weekend just didn't really do it for me.
The book is about three women whom are friends through their husbands and how the three of them go to a old farmhouse for the weekend and get a very unpleasant surprise when they first arrive, the rest of the book is trying to figure out and navigate their way through some old secrets and lies and maybe even death.
Some things I do like about the book were about a third of the way through there was a twist I totally did not see coming and in general the book had a decent pace and enough suspense that made me definitely want to follow through to the end.
And some not so good things were the story is told from multiple povs but at times it's hard to know who is talking and or thinking. At times it made the book a bit confusing and the other thing was the characters in general weren't very likeable.
All in all this was not a bad book by any means, and I would recommend reading it if you're a fan of this author or thrillers / mysteries it just wasn't up to par with the author's other work in my opinion.

I have really enjoyed Gilly Macmillan's previous books. While I enjoyed this one, it wasn't one of my favorites. Loved the twist in the middle (I had to go back and re-read to make sure I hadn't missed something). I thought it dragged a bit in the middle. It started with a good story line and drew me into the novel. I really enjoyed the changing of perspective between the characters and how you assumed you were hearing from one person but then it turned out it was someone else. However, there wasn't a single character that I liked. It seemed unreasonable that they were all that bad of people. You needed someone to be at least a little normal.

I stayed up late into the night finishing this one. The author pulled off a twist I wasn't even looking for about a third of the way through that kept me hooked right until the end. Even after all is revealed, wondering if vulnerable characters will be able to get away from the baddie kept the thrills coming. My one criticism is that during the first half of the book we meet some characters who I got invested in that we only briefly revisit at the end of the book. I think it would have felt smoother if the characters remained integrated through the rest of the book. But hey, Macmillan got me to care about the characters!

Gilly Macmillan is one of my definite go-to authors and this book has hit the nail on the head with psychological suspense!

5 star book! Could not stop reading and was surprised at every page.
3 women leave for a long weekend awaiting their husbands arrival the next morning. Upon arrival the women are shocked when they find a threatening letter and gift from an old friend. The owner's of the rustic have their entire own baggage they bring to these women's weekend. All 3 women's lives begin to unravel as secrets are revealed and they are forced into extreme situations. Life is changing back at home and none of them know what is happening.
Every character is written beautifully and brings a major piece of the story together. I was shocked so many times through the book. Often had to go back and reread chapter because I was so amazed I needed to take it all in again to make sure I hadn't missed any clues.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves suspense and surprises in a story!

This is my first novel by this author, and I think I should have started with a different one. The plot was solid, and the setting was eerie. The writing style, while a little slower-paced than I'm used to, was easy to read and included some beautiful description. However, I found the characters to be pretty interchangeable and difficult to tell apart while reading (particularly the husbands), and the end left me disappointed. Mystery lovers who are fans of Macmillan's previous work will enjoy this. Unfortunately, it just missed the mark a bit for me.
