The plot was interesting and the characters were well-built. Cyber bullying was one of the main themes of the book. It delves into a few mental health issues and how it affected the characters. The chapters go back and forth through time which was a little hard to keep up since I was listening to an audiobook but not confusing.
The ending was good, maybe a little predictable near the middle but overall, a decent read.

Thank you #NetGalley and #Dreamscapemedia for giving me the opportunity to listen to this for my candid review.

An interesting thriller with characters whose histories as youths cross again as adults.
This book covers all the characteristics that produces a good mystery: bullying, egos, dysfunctional families, suicide, social media. It’s all included here.
Early on I decided who was the source of the problem and I was correct but the revelation came about in a convoluted way that incorporated a few unexpected surprises.
While I enjoyed the evolution of the mystery, I was really weary of listening to one of characters (Josh) constantly cry. I became less sympathetic with Josh as his tears flowed and I started to tune him out when he really deserved more of my attention.

I just wasn’t a fan of this audiobook. Off the bat the narrator’s voice/cadence was just off that I thought “oh no” but I did get used to it as the story progressed. The story starts off interestingly enough: HS Reunion where Natalie, an ex-model due to an accident that left her with severe facial scars, and Josh, shy computer geek, hit it off and soon are engaged to marry. But suddenly Natalie is getting nasty messages on her vlog saying she shouldn’t be marrying a murderer. Turns out that Josh was questioned by police when a girl in high school who had drowned in a lake at a weekend camping trip he was on, but nothing ever came of it, and it was ruled an accident. Throw into the mix Josh’s best friend Gareth who is trying to help and his stepbrother who tortured him endlessly and sounds like the perfect kind of jerk to be making these accusations. Unfortunately, this is where it really bogs down with nothing more than accusations for a very long time. And I had a very hard time with the suspending my belief enough to buy those accusations alone from an anonymous internet troll were enough to make Josh start to believe that he really did do it. It was too farfetched.

So that said it was an okay book, that wasn’t so bad I didn’t quit it, but not interesting enough that I’m going to be telling all my reading friends to go check it out.

From the start of this book, the characters and storyline drew me in. It was a fast paced book with a good balance of background and current events. I will say that some of the twists I did see coming, including the final twist, however I did not imagine it to be as extreme as it ended up being.

Definitely recommend - also, wonderful narration to enjoy if you are a book listener!

This was a slightly suspenseful book. However, it didn’t grab my attention the entire time. Natalie is a former model. Her career is cut short after an accident left a scar across her face. Natalie hesitantly attends her high school reunion where she meets back up with Josh. Josh was constantly bullied throughout his life and because of this has a history of depression. After Natalie and Josh are married, Natalie receives a note saying that Josh is a murderer. Natalie tries to get to the bottom of this. Did she marry a murderer? The writing switches point of views and was told from current time and back in high school. This was a slow burn. I didn’t really like any of the characters. The storyline was OK. I just wish I connected with it more. This was a psychological thriller that fell flat.

This is a twisty thriller that takes many different turns. The book started out slow for me. The characters are believable. They are flawed but not overdone. I listened to the audiobook and the narrator did a very good job.

Very few people live without regrets. Most of us have those moments in our past that we wish we could redo—that we wish had played out differently. And in the audio edition of Into the Lake by author L. K. Chapman, one man finds himself facing that moment again years later...

Even though Natalie isn't keen on going to her HS reunion, she is excited to jump into a new relationship with Josh, who she is just now getting to know. A whirlwind romance turns into an engagement, and everything is wonderful, until Natalie gets a note telling her something very upsetting about Josh.

Desperate not to believe it, Natalie does everything she can to prove her lover's innocence, which may lead her down some dangerous roads...

I really enjoyed this one, as well as the complicated relationships with the friends and siblings. It definitely went to show how important a healthy relationship can be vs. a toxic one. This book had me guessing until the very end and I had fun the whole time.

I enjoyed this book the plot was entertaining and kept at a steady pace. I like the twist and found it not too far fetched that it wasn’t believable. The way it’s written in different perspectives really help the story unfold and I didn’t find jumping back in time confusing to follow.

I listened to this book via audiobook & it was decently entertaining towards the end. With that said, the first 80% of the book felt like it drug on with nothing major happening.

Josh & Natalie meet at a class reunion & have an instant connection. But as they get to know each other and get more serious in their relationship Natalie starts getting messages that Josh is a murderer. Can she clear his name before it’s too late? Or is he the murderer?

Again, this was a little too slow paced for me, but it was something to listen to while driving to and from work. If you want to pass some time, I would recommend this book, but not if your looking for a wild ride of a book.

I enjoyed this thriller. I really like how we saw Josh's mental state slowly deteriorate as he is overcome with his past and his toxic "golden" brother. Natalie was committed and really proved her loyalty while showing her strength as she was torn into on her vlogs. The story unfolded fast paced and the suspense was real. There were several people you have to keep and eye on and the revel was awesome.

A very troubling story of love with years of guilt, suspicion, and hurt. Started great, then became slow, and then ended with a bang!! Great thriller. Recommended.

You bad bad killer.... Was my final thought. I definitely figured out who before the characters but not how bad. The pacing was good to keep my attention. Although i have questions is the reason for a 4 star.

Natalie had a promising future as a model when she is in an accident caused by a distracted driver that leaves her with a prominent facial scar. She now works with her sister in law as a wedding event planner and has a video blog. When she receives an invitation to a school reunion she is at first reluctant but is persuaded to go. She connects with a classmate named Josh and the two are swept up in a relationship and engaged within months. Someone seems determined to ruin her happiness though and she is soon receiving messages warning her that Josh is a murderer and to ask him about Mikayla, the lake and what happened all those years ago. When she confronts Josh he tells her that he can’t remember what happened that night but dream have returned that have him convinced he is responsible for the death and he wants to turn himself in. Natalie is determined to prove that they deserve a future together and placed herself in harms way to clear his conscience.
I enjoyed this although I felt it did drag in places and I felt that Josh was a little annoying. The cruelty of his stepbrother was a little overbearing(he’s a bad guy, we get it) and I think readers of this genre will see some of the plot reveals early. There are unexpected twists though and the story is entertaining with enough suspense to keep you reading until the last page. I would not categorize this book as a thriller as I never found myself on the edge of my seat. I did like the story, but it progressed at a fairly slow, even rate and never made me want to read faster to find out the truth about the teenage drowning. I did not particularly care for Gareth, and Josh was unstable and whiny, but Toby's character was written really well as I thoroughly disliked him! When the truth is finally presented I didn't feel any big AHA moments and I also wasn't surprised. I listened to the audiobook version and I liked the narrator and felt he did a great job.

This book keeps you on your toes! The rising action is fantastic and other than one sort of unbelievable progression on the part of the protagonist, the characters were well developed and interesting! The narrator had a lovely timbre to his voice and was pleasant to listen to.

What I thought I was going to get when I read the book summary for Into the Lake by LK Chapman and what I got were two completely different things. Like, this book was completely unexpected. Not in the best way. This book revolves around Natalie and Josh, who connect and fall in love after their reunion, Toby, Josh's stepbrother who is a pretty miserable person, and Gareth, Josh's best friend. First off, these people are all nuts. Natalie is the least nuts, but I didn't connect with any of these characters. Their actions are just not...normal.

Natalie and Josh reconnect at a reunion and fall in love. Josh has a past where someone once died. Some claim he murdered this person. In fact, people are telling Natalie that he's a murderer. This puts Josh into a whole diffrerenct headspace and Natalie is trying to find out who, in fact, really killed this person. The story also involves Garets, Josh's best friend, and Toby, Josh's disgusting stepbrother. There is a continual stream of drama and twists that occur throughout the book, but unfortunately I just didn't care. The narration was decent. It took a little getting used to, but I really didn't have a problem with it as some other reviewers apparently did.

It was an above average thriller for me, I'd go so far as rating it 3.5. Thank you Netgalley for the opportunity to listen to and rate the audiobook. I'd recommend the book to readers who enjoy a whodunit with lots of red herrings thrown in the mix.

When Natalie reluctantly agrees to attend a school reunion, she hits it off with former classmate Josh - a boy she barely spoke to while they were at school together - and finds herself swept up in a whirlwind romance with him.

Then she receives the message: you can do better than marrying a murderer.

As Natalie pieces together the tragic story of the teenage girl who drowned at Chedford Lake, she realises she has the perfect opportunity to clear Josh’s name. But it will mean putting herself in serious danger – and betraying someone she loves.

With Josh spiraling deeper into despair, and her own life torn apart by lies, can Natalie unravel what really happened before it is too late?

f I hadn't read the blurb, I might have given up after the first few chapters, which read more as a romance story than a thriller. There is some background tension as Josh and Natalie reveal they each had tragedies in their past, but in present-day there initially seems to be no problem or tension whatsoever. It's not until Natalie receives the message about marrying a murderer, which occurs 6 or 7 chapters in, that the story takes more of a thriller turn. From there, it has some intriguing elements and great characterization, particularly about Josh's tragic relationship with his stepbrother and the girl who drowned at the lake. However, there are also parts that make it difficult to suspend disbelief, such as Natalie's decision to act as if she distrusts Josh in hopes of catching the one she thinks is really behind everything.

I was disappointed to learn that the real villain was the same person I had suspected way back near the beginning of the book, though their reasons were different (and far more bizarre and dissatisfying) than I expected. It's unfortunate that this story perpetuates the idea that an individual with mental illness turns out to be a psychopath, when statistically they are far more likely to be a victim (like Josh, though his stubborn readiness to believe he's the one who's insane seemed to be excessive). There was a clever twist regarding who wrote the social media posts that I didn't see coming, and another twist that felt overly contrived.

I'd give this book 3 1/2 stars for some great details and scene descriptions, as well as a novel premise.
