I just wanted this book to be over and to see who the murderer actually was. The book started off in an interesting way but just became laborious with insignificant details and a host of characters who might have seen something at a particular time. The main character Greer is an amateur detective who seemed to have more knowledge than the local police . The beginning of this book has Greer attending a friend’s wedding to gain some insight into the death of her husband who she suspected was murdered three years prior.
This investigation was displaced by a death occurring at the wedding and the book focused on solving this murder albeit in a lengthy manner with so many irrelevant events and details .

I really enjoyed The Unkindness of Ravens and was very excited for a second Greer novel. An executive- turned-librarian protagonist is near and dear to my heart, as I am one myself, and while I don't even remotely enjoy (or envy!) Greer's capacity for finding her way into and out of trouble, reading about it is magnificently entertaining.

Admittedly, this was not quite as fast a read for me as the first book. The pacing was a little uneven and things felt highly repetitive in a couple of junctures. Still, the characterizations and plot were entertaining and if the ending was a little far-fetched, well, it was still an enjoyable read.

I am definitely going to stick with the series, as I am dying to find out what she is able to uncover about her husband's murder... And I find Ian a delightful addition to her universe. Their burgeoning (re)relationship should offer the opportunity for loads more snarky back-and-forth and collaboration and I look forward to watching it play out!

Shadow in the Glass: A Greer Hogan Mystery by M. E. Hilliard. Crooked Lane Books, 2022.

This book grabbed and kept my attention from the beginning to the end.

Fortyish Greer Hogan attends her close friend Sarah’s lavish three-day wedding in the Adirondacks, intending to help and to see old friends there who might have insight into why Greer’s husband was murdered three years earlier.

I enjoy stories most when I can respect and connect with the characters, as happened immediately with the very smart and likeable Greer, and her close friends and eventual partners in solving the mystery – the wedding couple and their siblings and slightly kooky aunts, and an old flame Greer meets again.

Aside from the wedding and its satellite events, there is an unexpected murder, a spooky house next door, quite a bit of sneaking about, trying not to be caught or seen, and the hint of new romances.

The mystery isn’t what I expected it to be though, and with a few red herrings in the story, some diverting, sad side stories that make the story more complex, I was perplexed until the last chapter.

There is everything to like about this book. Warmly recommended.

Greer's husband was murdered 3 years ago and she does not believe that the man convicted is responsible for his death. Perhaps seeing old friends at a wedding will allow her to investigate - except now a young woman is missing. Second in the series (first I had read), I enjoyed the character interaction as well as the plot. An added plus for me is Greer's reading choices.

I immediately liked Greer, the main character - widowed, mature and clear sighted about her own strengths and weaknesses, good sense of humor and impossibly curious (also known as nosey).. a librarian with a penchant for Agatha Christie mysteries, Greer has a habit of stumbling onto murder victims.

A decades old suspicious death, a society wedding, a May-December affair and lingering questions about the murder of Greer's husband make for a great fireside read.

I would love e to read a sequel!

Firstly, many thanks to NetGalley and Crooked Lane Books for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
Shadow in the Glass is a cozy, modern day murder mystery set in a lovely location, which the author details beautifully.
The many suspects have gathered for a wedding when the victim is discovered murdered on the grounds of the estate.
The main character, having been widowed years before, had attended the wedding hoping to get answers to help solve her late husband’s murder. Instead she is thrust into helping solve this latest murder using her skills as a research librarian.
The characters are well developed and we, the readers, are given insight into their lives, which made it an enjoyable read. I felt a few of the characters could have been eliminated as I felt they didn’t add to the storyline, but perhaps there will be a sequel, and they will resurface!

For the most part, I somewhat enjoyed reading Shadow in the Glass. But too many laborious paragraphs with too many boring details, that caused confusion. I kept hoping to reach the ending, so as to “get on with it” and find the murderer. More to just have the book end than to anticipate “who done it!” Thank you NetGalley and Crooked Lane Books for this ARC. I appreciate it.

The beginning was much better and more intriguing than the previous book. In the middle there were too many characters giving rise to confusion. It took some time for me to get my head around the players. The part where Greer derives at the conclusion needs to be edited and made succinct. 3.5 stars

Not much depth to this one and I felt no connection to the main character - her personality was flat and boring. There was too much telling, not enough showing, and no sense of setting or mood. There was no excitement. The paragraphs where the main character tries to figure out the timing of the murder were long, boring and confusing. Not recommended, sorry.

This book was sent to me on Kindle for review by Netgalley. I like this author. I enjoy her stories. Mystery and intrigue...books and libraries...what is not to like? The story moves quickly with surprises. I am excited to read the next book.

I'm a big fan of this series. The fact that main character Greer Hogan is a librarian scores major points with me, but beyond that she is the kind of heroine that I can admire: she is a professional woman, no longer young, who uses her research expertise and considerable thinking skills to solve the mysteries that cross her path. Moreover, her back story gives her gravitas as she has suffered an incredible loss that motivates her sleuthing.

In this outing, Greer is attending a friend's wedding when a much disliked wedding guest is dispatched with. Who drowned Brittany Miles and why? There is a long list of suspects, each with ample motive, many of whom are family of the bride. Also on the list is Greer's former flame who has been squiring Brittany to business functions and was rumored to be engaged to her.

Greer does little of the stupid chance taking that annoys discerning readers and does most of her mystery breaking through keen observation and prodigious research skills, teasing the reader as layers of information are revealed until the final denouement.

Verdict: A modern gothic akin to those of masters Victoria Holt and Phyllis Whitney. I look forward to Greer's third outing.
