Mr. Wrong Number is a delightful rom-com by Lynn Painter. I laughed, I was sad, I could relate and I thoroughly enjoyed the journey that Ms. Painter took me on with Mr. Wrong Number. Will I seek out other titles by this author – absolutely!

“The layoff. The cheating. The breakup. The fire.”

The story begins with Olivia Marshall, ruminating about having burnt down her apartment building in Chicago (and all the events that led up to this event). To clarify – it was because her ex broke up with her and she went outside to burn his love letters she had received from him previously. Olivia was being responsible by burning the letters in a barrel. But due to her propensity for back luck and a series of unfortunate events – the building burnt down! So really – wasn’t the fire his fault? Regardless, the fire has left Olivia homeless. She was also jobless – so off back to Omaha, where she sits in the condo her brother lives in, feeling sorry for herself. And who does Jack live with? His life long best friend – Colin Beck, the all too perfectly handsome, gainfully employed, successful Colin! And “Liv” did not know that Jack and Colin were roommates. Oh boy… you can just see where this might go. Especially since for a brief moment in high school – Liv had a crush on Colin, until at the tender age of fifteen she overheard Colin telling Jack that she was a little weirdo. Needless to say – they each had a shock.

As Olivia is starting to rebuild her life, she is busy trying to get a job and to build up her shattered self esteem. And then it happens – she gets a text and a bit of bantering back and forth ensues – certainly caught my attention ☺:

Wrong Number: “So tell me exactly what you’re wearing.”

Me: “Your mom’s wedding dress and her favorite thong.”

Wrong Number: “Um, what?”

Me: “Seriously, babe, I thought you’d think it’s hot.”

Wrong Number: “Baby”? Wtf?

Me: “Would you prefer something less mommish?”

Wong Number: “Oh, no-it sounds totally hot. You cool with me rocking cargo shorts, socks with sandals, and your dad’s jockstrap?”

There is more to this initial text conversation, which left me chuckling! And so an anonymous relationship was born. It certainly seems that two individuals can be freer with each other when it is anonymous. Good for the short term but will their curiosity get the better of them? And what will happen when (or if) they meet?

Olivia’s luck ran hot and cold. Interviews, job offers, a job, and then no job. And around and around it went. Luckily, for the most part – she had Wrong Number to chat with. It was a great relationship, until it wasn’t. I won’t go into details as the journey is entertaining and must be enjoyed by each reader! Living with Colin was difficult for Olivia because at times he showed his “nice” side and this tended to confuse Olivia. I loved their journey as well as the journey between Wrong Number and Miss Misdial.

One solid piece of advice I gleaned from this story was that one must not judge a book by its cover. Olivia seemed like a hot mess but when Colin examined her actions – he finally understood Olivia. When that light bulb came on for Colin – I was very happy.

Will Liv’s family let her be the wonderful gal that she can be or will they forever see her as the hot mess from high school? Will Colin stop “placing” his foot in his mouth? The path to a happily ever after (HEA) was convoluted with many twists and turns, laughter and tears and some mighty hot sex and of course – many hours of interesting texts!

If you enjoy RomCom’s, very relatable characters, the perfect amount of sexy and hot and getting swept away by some mighty fine writing, then I anticipate you will enjoy Mr. Wrong Number as much as I did. Thank you to the author, Lynn Painter, for this delightful romantic comedy!

Cute yet cringey.

Another successful case of #bookstagrammademedoit! When I saw everyone raving over Mr. Wrong Number in January, I knew I needed to request a copy from @berkleyromance and @netgalley. I was so excited when my request was approved and I could jump on the Lynn Painter train.

This was indeed a fun rom com novel with some very funny moments, good romantic tension, and great banter (including text message banter). However, along with the great comedic moments a good dose of cringe was included. I also had a hard time with the heroine who was a bit of a mess but didn’t seem to have any remorse when her accident prone ways effected others negatively. It left me with conflicting emotions about her. The hero on the other hand was very swoony and he seemed to make up for any issues I had with the heroine because I was fully invested in the romance by the end.

I do feel compelled to point out as a side note that the research done in Purple mattresses wasn’t complete as the hero uses linen sheets on one and as a Purple mattress owner, I just don’t see how that’s possible. Unless he has found some sort of stretch linen and if this exists can someone please send me a message and let me know where I can get some.

Update 1: At 20-something percent I was loving this for the banter and feeling the pairing, but at 37% I'm getting increasingly tired of the hot mess FMC's lack of boundaries and disrespecting the space where she is LIVING FOR FREE.

I like a grumpy/sunshine but this is reminding me of how my teenage neighbor used to sneak into my house and STEAL MY SHOES. and lie about taking them. Ugh, this is running out of charm fast

Update 2: Still at it! Adoring Olivia's voice in her chapters - but Colin's chapters make him seem like the Boring Worst and make me hate Olivia.

Dueling POVs are good in theory, but not when one of them sucks out all of the squees you've built up.

Update 3: "I got to 82% of this WEEKS ago and I can't bring myself to finish it. Ugh. (Not my jam. But we're still gonna buy it for my library because there are people out there who will enjoy it"

The struggle for me in reading has definitely continued into 2022. I keep trying new books and giving up. Fortunately, Mr. Wrong Number kept my attention very well!

Olivia Beck has just moved in with her brother because she started a small fire that went out of control. (It was not her fault. You’ll get the full specifics as the story continues.) Unfortunately, this is just one more failure that makes it seem like, to her family, that her screw-up personality continues. Living with her brother isn’t ideal but it’s a safe place to crash as she tries to find a new job and a new place to live. Unfortunately, also living with her brother is her brother’s best friend, Colin Beck. Olivia and Colin have always clashed.

When Olivia receives a wrong number text, it begins a flirtatious texting relationship that Olivia and her mysterious texting man both enjoy. Unfortunately, Colin figures out who his mystery woman is and tries to put a stop to it. It’s not that easy.

There is great sexual tension in this book. Colin and Olivia definitely have that enemy-to-lovers trope I enjoy! But what really took their romance to another level for me is how Colin is one of the few people in Olivia’s life who supports her. Sure, it doesn’t happen overnight but he really proves to be a great sounding board as she tries to figure out where to take her career. Of course, there is a big “conflict” at the end that throws a wrench into their growing relationship. I expected it given the premise of the story.

I liked seeing Olivia grow. I really disliked her family (talk about being cruel when someone is down–and I feel like this was never properly addressed). Olivia and Colin have an unexpected beginning but their relationship grows from something fun and light to a more serious but equally enjoyable love.

Mr. Wrong Number is available now. The Kindle book is kind of expensive but if you can find this one at the library it’s worth checking out!

Mr. Wrong Number by Lynn Painter was a fun romantic comedy that had me laughing out loud numerous times.

When Olivia accidentally burns down her apartment building after finding out her boyfriend was cheating on her, she moves back home to Omaha. Out of desperation, she moves in with her brother and his attractive, but intolerable best friend/roommate. One night, Olivia gets a text from a wrong number and things escalate and turn steamy quickly. Little does Olivia know that Mr. Wrong Number is actually Collin. Meanwhile, she finds herself falling for the real-life Colin, who she once despised. Will she ever make the connection that Colin and Mr. Wrong Number are one and the same?

Overall, I thought this was a really fun and light-hearted book. I adored Colin and thought he was a really great match for Olivia. I also really enjoyed the witty banter between Mr. Wrong Number and Miss Misdial.

The brother’s best friend trope was not enough to make up for the one-dimensional Hot Mess Express of a female MC or the outright deception of the male MC. There are very few ways to execute the miscommunication trope well, and this was not it. It was funny at times, but ultimately I didn’t enjoy it because the above issues gave me the ick factor.

Olivia Marshall is has a ton of bad luck that follows her, From getting laid off to getting dumped by her boyfriend to becoming homeless all in matter of a couple of days! Olivia moves in with her brother and his best friend Colin, who she has always been at odds with. Olivia receives an accidental text from a stranger and they quickly form a bond. The enmity between Olivia and Colin also seems to have switched to attraction. How Olivia navigates Mr Wrong Number and Colin forms the premise of the story.

I loved the premise of how an accidental text can turn into so much more. Colin is a super nice hero, but it was annoying that he doesn't tell Olivia that he is Mr Wrong Number for such a long time. Olivia is interesting but also super annoying by jumping into conclusions so often. Despite the flaws in the the main characters, that didn't work too well for me, I still found the book to be entertaining funny and a breezy read.

Thank you so much for an arc of this charming novel!

I really enjoyed Mr. Wrong Number! It has some off my favourite tropes in it and I was really rooting for Olivia and Collin! I liked the pacing of the relationship and how it developed. I also enjoyed the secondary characters of Olivia and Collins siblings, though also felt for them with their relationship/interactions between them and their parents! I couldn’t put this one down and recommend it for anyone looking for a fun rom com with some steam! Will definitely be reading more from this author in the future!

F me -🔥🔥 Colin Beck wowza! Ok got that out of my system! But really sexy suit then a fisherman's sweater while wearing tortoise shell glasses - are you trying to hyperactivate my imagination? (Hey Google find tortoise shell glasses in husband's prescription).

I feel like I keep saying this but this adorable whirlwind of a character was so relatable to batshit crazy me. Lol. But I loved the way Colin explained it at the end and Friend's find you a partner that figures you out like that. I don't want to get ahead of myself but these two had a very rough road and it was so steamy.

One night after Olivia has to move in with her brother after she was the cause of her apartment burning down (could happen to anyone) she gets a random text asking what she's wearing. And with her snarkiness a cute banterish back and forth ensues. This brightens her otherwise crappy existence because along with the fire her boyfriend had been an unredeemable ass. This Mr. Wrong Number texts a few times more. But somehow the person in question finds out it's her and yes he can't reconcile the annoying little sister with this person he's fallen for. And he definitely can't date his best friend's little sister. But ... can he resist if she doesn't? Then so much happens and the 3rd act heartbreak always scares me - I'm like cool, we are happy and having fun- why is there so much of the book left?

Ack! I want to read it again! I have been so lucky this year so far with books that have made my heart happy.

Read if you like:
❤ Slowburn attraction

❤ Whirlwind of sunshine and responsible big brothers best friend

This book I would rate about 4. The tension was amazing and the banter was probably the best I've ever read. It's a brother's best friend book trope which I secretly love. Olivia Marshall is a hot mess in the most sincerest ways.

Everything in her life is always going sideways and to be honest I can relate. Then you have Colin who is a slightly grumpy man in finance. Colin accidentally texts the wrong number which happens to be Olivia and they form an hilarious friendship while in reality the two get closer. As mention this book has some of the best banter. It's probably because half of the things Olivia says I would totally too. The tension between the two is delicious but it is more or less fade to black.

There are two things some people might be annoyed at. 1st if that Olivia constantly brings up how rich and entitled Colin is despite the fact he does show that he cares and there's more to him than money. The 2nd thing is the constant battle of 'that's my brother best friend' 'that's my best friend's little sister.' While those are thoughts that should be expressed and mulled over the characters are two consenting adults. I feel like it should be brought up then dealt with right away instead of constantly saying it. However this is a 'my brother best friend trope' so I expected.

This book is the definition of a Romcom and I can't wait for book 2 which follows Olivia's brother.

I was really looking forward to Mr. Wrong Number. The description seemed so fun and something I would 100% into. It was a brother’s best friend story which is one of my favorite kind of romance tropes. And honestly I was really into about 82% of this story, but that is where the love ended. Don’t get my wrong, the stuff I loved was worth reading, but as a whole it just missed the mark for me. The last 17% just didn’t fit what I had loved in the beginning of the story. It wasn’t painful to read but I found myself getting more annoyed by each second with how the characters were acting and not actually talking to one another. That was what really bugged me because it felt it went on for just too long, the not talking. But again, I did really enjoy it just not to the level I expected to when I started.

4.25/5 💫 60% of this book gets 5 stars, and the last 40% gets a 4/3.75 kinda rating. I literally wanted to give this book all the stars in the universe, but the last few chapters changed my mind. Mind you though, this is not a negative review!

I LOVED reading Mr. Wrong Number for the most part. The banter and the text messages between Olivia and Colin made me swoon like crazy. I couldn't stop laughing while reading about them. 😭 It's been a while since a book made me laugh so much, so I am very grateful to Berkley for approving me to read this book early!

Olivia was such a fun character to read about. Her messy lifestyle and personality which was 100 percent derived from her bad luck was so lovable. 🥺 It broke my heart to see how her family treated her for her tendency to get involved in wrong situations, so I wanted to protect her AT ALL COSTS. Now, Colin ~ Colin!!!! I loved how Mr. Wrong Number had dual POV so we got to see how the hero felt about different situations in the story too! Colin bought out a very different side of Liv, both in his texts as Mr. Wrong Number + as himself. Their chemistry and banter was 💯

Enemies-to-lovers is such a tought trope to write about. Most of the time the "enemies" part between the male and female lead stays for like 10 percent of the book, which doesn't make sense, but in this book the trope got it's fulfilment. :') I am so glad that happened. You must be confused. It seems like I loved everything about the book, SO WHAT'S WITH THAT RATING???? Well, sadly (I cannot stress how sad I am about this), the story was rushed in the last few chapters. A lot of things were happening at once, and I wanted things to slow down so that Olivia and Colin could have some time to solve their conflicts. And while they did solve their conflicts, the way that happened didn't sit right with me. 🥺 I also wished Olivia's family faced a bit of confrontation, and I wanted the story explored Colin's relationship with his father a bit more.

I would still recommend this book in a heartbeat. This is Lynn's first adult romance, so I am pretty sure her next books will be better! 💕

Olivia is clumsy, but she's intelligent, kind, and fun to be with. Livvie has to do what she can to get a job and her apartment despite her shortcomings, but luck is not always on her side. Then you have her battling between her feelings for Mr. Wrong Number and finding herself falling for grumpy Collin.

Collin is the grumpy brother's roommate and best friend and worth being my next book boyfriend. The one who loves being in control and an organized environment until he has Livvie living in his apartment. Collin is shocked when he finds out that Livvie is the same person he's been texting — but what happens when she knows the truth?

Mr. Wrong Number is all shades of swoons, from texting the wrong person, falling for someone you never thought would even like you, the banter, the blushing - all the ingredients to make one fall in love with love all over again.

Lynn Painter, you made me blush hard, and I loved that.

Thanks, Berkley, for the gifted e arc ❤️

Fun fact: I read this book solely while waiting in queues in Disneyland.

This book was fun and breezy! The writing style was extremely easy to get into, and I found the conversations rather enjoyable. The story itself was good, although extremely predictable. Despite that, I really enjoyed reading this, and I can highly recommend it!

A quick read. Lots of good steam, which I appreciated. And the story kept moving, moving, moving.

I was irritated that the book relied on so many tired tropes and lazy plot devices. Olivia is clumsy (barf) and always seems to make a mess of things. Colin is perfectly put together (yawn). Olivia is curvy, wears bright red lipstick, and is a tomcat in the sack (annoying). Colin is gorgeous with an oft-referenced six-pack, yet is uber-clever, emotionally available, and just wants to connect (uh huh).

I also didn't love that Olivia and Colin were willing to (borderline) purposely misunderstand each other several times. The drama felt manufactured and easily avoidable.

And yet, I kept reading. Olivia and Colin do have good banter. There are some really funny lines. Side characters are fun, too, including Olivia's brother. I was invested in the story and didn't want to stop until I knew how it all ended (even when I already knew how it was going to end). I was willing to endure some cringe in order to be entertained, and I was.

I finished Mr, Wrong Number on Monday, and needed a day to stew about it. You know those moments where a book is great, but a couple moments just…lag? Don’t connect? Stick out? They something, and you feel torn if it’s enough to impact the overall book, when it’s a you thing?

That’s me and this book.

I got a few chuckles, and LOVED Colin, and while I greatly enjoyed Olivia, personally, I am burnt out on the manic pixie dream girl, hot mess combo. She often came across at I Love Lucy levels of slapstick, and some were great, and relatable, but then it just kept coming in every single situation, and I got burned out by it.

I know this sounds like a negative review, but it’s more a “if you’re looking for a high hijinks RomCom, this would be a fabulous choice, but it wasn’t a good fit for me” review.

Thank you to @netgalley @berkleyromance and @berkleypub for my eArc in exchange for my honest opinion.

Mr. Wrong Number by Lynn Painter is a brother’s best friend romance that makes this an enjoyable fun-filled love story, as Olivia falls for her brother’s best friend Colin. Olivia Marshall has the worse luck in the world; her latest disaster being accidently starting a fire while burning love letters from her ex. This disaster not only has her losing all her belongings, but also homeless, and jobless. Fortunately, her brother and his roommate, his longtime irritating best friend Colin, let he stay in their apartment. Then Olivia gets a text from a random number asking what she’s wearing. Before she knows it, she ends up texting with the stranger, creating a “text-relationship” with this guy, Mr. Wrong Number, while she tries to navigate her new life. Soon, Olivia starts relying on Mr. Wrong Number while they bounced back ideas about life and plans for the future. Colin Beck has not once thought about Olivia in any way other than her being his best friend's chaotic, annoying, hot mess younger sister. Even when she moved in, he could have never believed that he'd ever think of her as more than that. But the longer he sees her, the more he puts together the puzzle that is Olivia and he begins to understand her a bit more. Colin's going to get a few more surprises but nothing tops the fact that Olivia is less mess, more beautiful, and is getting under his skin. The chemistry between these two is off-the charts, lighting up their apartment building.

Ms. Painter wrote an enjoyable, humorous, delightful story read full of snark and sass and a lot of laughs that should not be missed. She provided a tale rich with sizzling chemistry, family dynamics, clever humorous banter, lots of laughs, and strong secondary characters giving Olivia and Coline a chance at love, happiness, and a future together. I highly recommend Mr. Wrong Number to other readers.

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.

This was adorable! So swoon-y & the chemistry was great. Steamy but not over-the-top graphic. Would highly recommend. Loved the sexual tension & the overall storyline. 5/5 stars, would definitely recommend to romance fans.
