This is book eight in the ongoing series about Window's Island and its inhabitants. The past has come back to haunt former FBI agent Cate Wilde in the form of a note and bone delivered to her.. She suspects the bone belongs to a missing little girl she was never able to locate.
I look forward to the release of four new novella every Fall by Melinda Leigh and Kendra EllIot. These short, fast paced mysteries are perfect for reading in one sitting. The authors do a great job of intertwining the story lines so as not to confuse the reader.
Thank you to NetGalley and Montlake Publishing for providing a copy of this book for review.

Cate is retired now, but when an old case comes knocking she is requested to help. A kidnapping and murder of a child is a hard case to ignore. Not usually a fan of novellas, but this one worked well. Fast paced but also hard to put down. Highly recommend this book.

Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC. This novella (about 120 pages on my device) is the 8th in a series that takes place on Widow's Island in the Pacific Northwest. Cate Wilde worked for the FBI for 15 years but returned to Widow's Island after she was shot in the line of duty. She now runs a bakery and book store with the grandmother. A package arrives with a childs mandible inside. She knows instantly it is a case of hers from seven years ago involving the kidnapping of a three year old by her father. Neither was found. Cate was the lead and has the best contact with the mother and family and the FBI asks for her help.

The story is good and I like that Cate follows the rules. Her fiancé is a local doctor and is a stable balance for her when she becomes hyper focused. This wasn't a mystery of who did it but more how to find the person involved and maybe rescue someone else. The novella format works well but I didn't find this book as suspenseful as the one before it. I will still look for the earlier books available on Kindleunlimited and watch for future books from the author. (There are two authors for the series but they each write their own books.) (3.5 stars)

Cate can't seem to stay away from the FBI, even after formally leaving the bureau. When new evidence from one of her cold cases gets delivered to her on Widow's Island, she knows she has to do everything she can to close the case. Another amazing story in the series - action packed and thrilling, you won't be able to put it down!

The eighth novella in Kendra Elliot and Melinda Leigh's Widow Island series is told from the point of view of Cate Wilde, a former FBI agent who left her dangerous and highly stressful, albeit intellectually stimulating, job to become a baker/bookstore owner. Cate is also Tessa Black's (the protagonist of the previous novella) best friend and Logan's (Tessa's fiance) sister.
If you are a newcomer to the series, you will appreciate the way the author provides re-cap details making sure you are introduced to the recurring characters and the developments in their lives. We find out why Cate decided to leave her FBI job and how happy she is with her fiance Dr Henry Powers, the only doctor (and coroner) on the island.  Then a mysterious package is delivered to Cate's bakery and Cate can't help but get involved in an old child kidnapping case. This time there is very little doubt that the girl didn't survive and somebody, perhaps another woman in a similar situation to little Jade's mother, is asking for help. Jade's father Rich has never been found, but he always prefered to live off the grid. Can Cate bring the closure to Jade's grieving mother and find the fugitive before he can destroy more lives?
This short novella was absolutely action-packed. The pace was excellent- with slower moments that show the important relationships in Cate's life- fiance, girlfriends, grandmother, neighbours and super fast, nail-biting race to catch the kidnapper and save lives in the end.
I really enjoyed getting to know more about the island and how it got its name.
It was also great to see how the stories from the two authors (Melinda Leigh wrote books 2,3, 6, and 7, Kendra Elliot -1,4,5, and 8) seem to merge seemlessly.
Can't wait to read the continuation of Tessa and Cate's stories in future books.
Thank you to NetGalley and Montlake for the review copy. All opinions are my own and were not influenced in any way.

I didn't realize that this was a novella.. A quick read but as I had not read the other series, I felt like I was at a disadvantage. Probably will not go back to the previous books.

Wow. This one starts off with the delivery of a child’s mandible. You just know from that point on this book has teeth. ( LOL)
This book, while part of an ongoing series of novellas, was everything you want in a book!

Cate, a former FBI agent moved to this island after being shot, all of a sudden a lead in a 7 year old cold case in where a little girl disappeared at the hand of her father arrives at her doorstep. Can she finally get closure? Can she find him before another child is killed ?

I loved everything about this book and I will read this entire series !

The Widow's Island novellas are like comfort reads for me. From authors I love that you know your going to get a great mystery with strong female leads and a wonderful secondary characters.

Cate Wilde gave up her job as an FBI agent and settled in as a owner of a Bakery and Bookstore. She's been much more happier with her stress free life along with being in love with Dr. Henry Powers.

But when a package shows up with child's jawbone inside and newspaper article about a case Cate never solved from her days with the FBI, she knows she is going to have to get involved again to solve the case.
