When I started this book, I didn't realise that there are actually two prequel novellas that come before it. While it's not essential to have read these, I think I would have preferred to have done so. There's a lot to take in in this world, in terms of magic and paranormal phenomenon and I think having read the previous stories, that would have helped. Even so, it didn't take me too long to get my head around everything and understand the world that Elspeth and Aleron live in.
This is a paranormal romance story and with quite a lot of world-building and scene-setting to do, it does take a little while for our couple to get together and then discover their feelings for one another. I wasn't surprised by what happened to Elspeth or what her role in everything was, there were a few hints dropped, particularly if you read the small verse before the book starts. Elspeth's family, or at least some members of her family, don't treat her particularly well and it was nice to see Aleron valuing her from the beginning, before anything changes. Even if he is a little wary of the kind of woman she might be before he meets her.
This is clearly part of a series. The romance part of the storyline is complete in this book, but there's a bigger story that we're only just seeing the start of and it's clear that we will learn more in future books. I would be quite keen to revisit this world and see what is in store next for its inhabitants.
I received a complimentary copy of this book through NetGalley. The opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Love a good mob book and really love an urban fantasy/paranormal romance...and when you combine the two?? Yeah, that is my kind of read! I loved Call of Fire. I loved Elspeth and her frustration at being essentially sold off as a broodmare. I really loved Aleron and his sense of justice and need for revenge. Together they really had sparks flying (pardon the pun). I did not know there were 2 prequel novellas and am off to check them out. CAN"T WAIT for the next installment of the Natura Series!!

Honestly I enjoyed this book a lot. It was steamy and it was fantasy. It was everything I love in a book. It could have been slightly more developed when t came to the world but I didn’t mind. Great read!

The Call to Fire has a wonderfully intriguing concept, however, the execution falls a little short.

Elspeth needs to find a cure for her brother Lach’s illness. Aleron wants to get revenge for his father’s death. The problem? Elspeth’s grandfather killed Aleron’s father and Elspeth must marry in order to get the cure for her brother’s illness. Aleron is assigned to be her bodyguard and they fall in love. What should they do? All of this takes place in a world full of naturas, beings made of elements, given human form. The world concept is fascinating with so much potential. In the end, I was disappointed that so many story promises were left unfulfilled.
The plot of this book was confusing. There are two separate plot lines that don’t connect very well. You have Elspeth trying to cure Lach and basically an earth ghost attacking her. The entire book I was trying to figure out how they connected, and they never did. You could have removed the Russians from this book entirely and had the same book.
The world building of this book could have been so much more. The ideas drew me in. People who have elemental power and need to have sex to rejuvenate? That seems like a great foundation. Add in the teases for power potentially being stolen during the exchange and witches who have an empty vessel that is filled with power, and you have a lot of highly interesting material. After reading this book, all of it just fell flat. There wasn’t a lot of exposition, so the book tended to be confusing. There seems to be some prequels, so read those first perhaps? If that fixes it, this book should be relabeled so people can understand the world better.
I would recommend this book to those who want to see the potential in a book and stick it out until it is realized later in the series. The world concept is exceptional. However, the execution leaves me with little desire to continue farther. If you read purely for entertainment, this is a splendid book. If you read to review and/or learn to write, this may not be the best choice for you.
