Vaginas always seem a bit of a taboo subject so it's nice to see a book out there that discusses this part of the female anatomy so well. A very interesting book!

This book was interesting. I'm not sure what I expected but it exceeded whatever it was. There where historical data about shapes and sizes. There was also pics of what the vagina looked like under the microscope which was cool. I would like to reread this book at a slower pace and share with my teenagers stuff we didnt even know.

The is book was great! Going over a history of something that many women I know (including myself) was really uneducated about in school and in general. Dr. Williams way of educating while still having humorous bits and keeping the science entertaining and easy to understand was great. I highly recommend this one!

A good guide for anyone with a vagina. Helpful facts and plenty of good information about health relating to the vaginal area. I have endometriosis and found this book very interesting to read. It is also good to bring along with you to the doctors!

Women's health books have begun to flood the adult nonfiction market recently. It often seems that they all contain simular information, topics, graphics, and covets. Nonetheless, I quite liked this authors style. They make the information really interesting and approachable.

I loved this book and wish that this was a part of the curriculum in my health class growing up! Dr. Nicole Williams educates us on all things vagina in a very down to earth, non medical way that the reader actually is entertained and educated. She gives interesting information and health history that I never knew before, myth busting of old wise tails, and she doesn't skip over any necessary information when it relates to sex. This is a great book for the young and old vagina owner. You will learn something!

Thank you NetGalley and Greenleaf Book Group Press!

This is a must read for every woman to understand better this part of their body. I loved how the book included some history and misconceptions around this subject. Using a light tone in some places it doesn't feel like a medical book and so it's easy to read.

Everyone seems to have something to say about the female vagina and for years, even going by the names it gets there has been still a lot that we don't know about the vagina and reading this book was way better and more revealing than the biology lessons and sex-ed classes I took. Dr. Nicole gives a historical account filled with facts and research on the science and mechanism of the vagina, as organ, she more of dissects everything and bares it all so anyone reading this is informed.
Thanks Netgalley for the eARC.

This is one of those books that all women should read at some point in their lives. Understanding your own body and how to take care of it is so important! Especially when it comes to this life-producing organ.

I did, however, feel that some of the writing was still to medical and difficult to understand for a layperson. I'm quite decently educated, but I still had trouble with some of the writing. If you really want to reach the public I think the medicak terminology should be kept to the bare minimum and the practical side of things should be discussed more.

Review - This is How You Vagina by Nicole Williams, M.D.
Title: This is How You Vagina

Author: Nicole E. Williams, M.D.

Rating: 2 ¾ stars

Review: Thank you to Greenleaf Book Group Press and the NetGalley platform for the free e-ARC I was given in exchange for an honest review.

Let me begin by saying that I really, really, really wanted to like this book. I think educating individuals with vaginas and uteruses about their bodies and about their sexual health is of utmost importance. And on its face, this book does that.

However, I have few major criticisms that prevent me from singing the praises of this book, even though I do think it’s incredibly important. The first major criticism, and one that I mentioned briefly when I first featured this book on my Instagram page, is that the author goes out of her way to use feminine language when discussing the vagina. However, it seems to me (although since I am not trans or nonbinary, please do correct me if I’m wrong and you feel safe and comfortable correcting me), that this type of feminizing language could alienate people with vaginas who do not themselves identify as female.

Two other issues arose as I read that further gave me pause. The first is that there are aspects of the book that seem particularly classist. When the author discusses food, especially, there doesn’t appear to be any consideration that some people are forced to eat the foods she’s saying to avoid based on income or location. Healthy foods can be expensive, and there are plenty of places that are considered food deserts where access to fresh food can be not only cost prohibitive but limited due to geographic restrictions.

Finally, (TRIGGER WARNING FOR SA) in a short section where she is discussing the disturbing rise of incel culture, she writes, “we can take solace in the fact that if one of them goes to jail after committing one of these heinous acts, the sex they’ll be getting certainly won’t be what they’re looking for.” Williams, Nicole. This is How You Vagina. E-book ed., Greenleaf Book Group Press, 2021. Kindle. Now, while I find incel culture repulsive, I also don’t think jokes or blase illusions to prison r*pe are appropriate either. Having spent much of my academic efforts in the past and my current professional life advocating for incarcerated individuals, any such casual reference to such a widespread, harmful issue appears to be ignorant at best, and cruel at worst.

That being said, there are plenty of aspects of this book that do deserve positive attention. This book is at its best when it is tying historical issues faced by individuals with vaginas (especially such individuals who were and are further marginalized by race or socioeconomic status) to contemporary medical issues faced by people today. Some of her most powerful points are developed in the final chapter, “Vaginalism: Vaginas in Race and Culture,” where she notes both that, “Making someone appear to be less than human allows other humans to do the most inhumane things” and “Black women have been fighting to be seen as pain-feeling humans for decades.” Williams, Nicole. This is How You Vagina. E-book ed., Greenleaf Book Group Press, 2021. Kindle. Both of these points, and many others developed throughout the book, point to serious social issues that exist now, but can and should be viewed through the historical lens through which they developed.

About that Quote: Another good part of this book are the sections that either implicitly or explicitly advocate for the medical rights of historically marginalized groups. This quote, and versions of it, appear throughout the book, highlighting the disparate medical treatment people with vaginas receive. Rooting these statements in her professional experience adds a layer of credibility, where many people with vaginas have often found their pain and their health concerns discredited.

(Unpaid Review: thank you to @netgalley, @drnicolewilliams and @greenleafgroup for allowing me to read this eArc copy in exchange for a review.)

There are times when a woman is insecure of her body and most importantly, of her vagina. There's still so much we don't know about it and I feel like this book was the enlightment most of us needed!

I feel like I needed to read this ever since I was born and sincerely, every woman should pick up this book. Seriously, it will make you love your vagina more!

This is the best non-fiction book I have read in my entire life.

This book is without any doubt about the vagina. Through myths, historical facts, personal anecdotes and more, the author gets to remove any taboo about the female reproductive organ.

Did you know about how Lysol was first used for?

Have you heard about Thor swimming in menstrual blood?

Did you know dildos were initially for men?

Everything in this book is proved by multiple research and advices from doctors and did not stop surprising me throughout every single chapter.

I really think everyone should read this book.

Whilst this book contained alot of interesting facts and info I also found myself skimming through parts that just were in no way relevant to me. So I would say read any of the chapters that interest you but you wont be missing out if you skip though the bits that are not relevant.

Thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for an advanced digital copy in exchange for an honest review.

Thank you NetGalley and Greenleaf Books for this ARC!

As a person with a vagina, this book is pretty much a bible. It takes us through the complete anatomy of the vagina and answers questions that you never even thought to ask.

It highlights how little we know about the female anatomy, and the necessity of this book. I would thoroughly recommend this book to everyone whether you have a vagina or not.

I loved this book! The author normalises taking about the vagina and sexual health in a chatty way, using slang we often hear rather than just the scientific phrases.

This is such an interesting and informative book that everyone needs to read. Show this to your daughters, your aunts and your friends!

Incredibly informative, yet easy to understand. A wealth of knowledge that shouldn’t be so taboo. I loved the breakdown of myths, and I was able to learn so much about my own body.

It’s great to read something written by a doctor that cares about women’s health, and vaginas.
