Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for giving me this eARC to review.

This was a lot better than I expected it to be in all honesty with its take on Beauty and The Beast being more horror based and the art is great. I think I need to read the second volume in order to get a better judgement on the characters and world.

An interesting twist to a fairy tale that we are usually familiar with.
Its very interesting on how it somewhat come together at the end of the first volume, making the manga a very easy read and something that I will pick up the second volume with.

And honestly, this story really took me by surprise. It has the perfect amount of gore and horror but also kept me on my toes. It was a story that wasn't what it seemed from the synopsis but one that takes a twist away from the original retelling. There is something unique about the storytelling that makes this story quite an easy read but also one that makes me feel like, hey this is something different.

Summary:

Some versions of Beauty and the Beast show a darker side of humanity. This is one such story. Belle has spent most of her life hidden away by her father, who blames her violet hair as reason enough to keep her away from the rest of society. But it has always felt like there was a darker reason for her isolation.

Meanwhile, there's a beast in the woods that kidnaps beautiful women. It kills others. Belle's mother was one of the latter victims, and with the beast once again wandering near the borders of her town, Belle is determined to get to the truth of what happened.

Review:

I went into Beauty and the Beast of Paradise Lost, Vol. 1, with fairly high expectations. I adore Beauty and the Beast retellings, so it doesn't take much to get me excited for a new one! Overall, I would have to say that this is a pretty solid retelling, though probably not my favorite.

Unsurprisingly, this manga starts off pretty dark. We have a monster kidnapping and killing young women, and Belle is somehow in the center of it. This kicks off some sort of dark mystery, and I still don't have all the answers to what is happening. I'm sure further volumes will provide answers, and I'm looking forward to finding out!

Highlights:
Beauty and the Beast retelling
Horror
Fantasy

Trigger Warnings:
Violence
Death of a parent

I had forgotten to review this manga. Beauty and the bast of paradise lost is a new retelling of the classic The beauty and the beast, but with a new twist added to it. I have to admit that the story is confusing sometimes, but it is the first volume in the manga, so I suppose that is going to be less confusing once you read the rest of the story.
I like de design of this new beast, more humanoid than the original, but with a different character. Also I'm intrigued to learn about the curse that was laid on the servants and the beast.

Gothic, creepy, horror fairy tale retelling. An interesting take although it did not appeal to me. Definitely a need for it in the manga format though.

A very interesting take on the Beauty and the Beast story that takes us into an enchanted castle floating in the sky. Elements of L. Frank Baum's wizard of Oz series are evident as well, and it makes for a creepy and interesting read with beautiful character design and just enough unanswered questions to keep the reader interested in more.

Interesting take on the original Beauty and the Beast story, with much more horror and violence. Enjoyed it a lot!

Belle is headstrong and independent, but when her mother is kidnapped by a creature called Beast and presumed dead, Belle's father locks her up for years.
When Belle sees her chance to escape and perhaps find her Mama, she takes it and runs into the REAL Beast, a former Prince and his magically moving castle. Belle decides to make herself useful and stay with the Beast in hopes of freeing her Mama and finding out her real history.

I have always been a fan of fairytale retellings and this is no exception. I found the artwork well done and the story gripping. I have since gone on to read issues 2-4 as they have been released. A great manga series I am thrilled to have found!

A lovely retelling of beauty and the beast that is more horror than fantasy. There should be a big tigger warning for abuse on this book because I found it caught me a few times. I think this story has a lot of potential, and I'm hesitant to make a complete judgement based on only volume 1.

***
Beauty and the Beast of Paradise Lost vol. 1 in this beautifully illustrated manga. It is a dark take on the Beauty and the Beast story with a lot of danger and high stakes. Belle knows she’s not normal, her hair is not the right color and she’s a bit strange. When she loses her mother in a horrific accident she is locked away by her father, “for her own protection.” When the beast that took her mother from her returns to her village Belle breaks out of her home to get answers but she finds she knows even less than she thought she did.
If you’re familiar with Kaori Yuki’s work you will probably pick this up just because of the name and a love for the art style (basically me) or maybe because you love a fairytale retelling (also me). Either way, the series is off to an interesting start, can’t wait to see how it’ll progress.

Beauty and the Beast of Paradise Lost is a wondeful twisted fairytale. Artwork is stunning and brought a lot more to their romance

This was an absolute stunning book not only for the artwork but for the twist in a fairytale I did t know I needed. Hands down one of the best books I have read in a while.

I think this story has a lot of potential and I love a good fairytale, but I am a little confused right now. Might be a translation issue, or intentional misdirection, but it feels a little choppy so far.
I enjoy the art and definitely want to get deeper into the romance aspect.

It was weird, dark and very interesting retelling of the 'Beauty and the Beast'. I generally like graphic novels, so I enjoyed the format and the artist's style. I think, in many ways, 'Beauty and the Beast of Paradise Lost 1' has been darker than the original story (though of course, there are some even darker retelling of this!), but definitely kept the story interesting throughout the whole graphic novel.

Beauty and the Beast of Paradise Lost Volume 1 is a visually stunning twist on Beauty and the Beast and Little Red Riding Hood. It was quite dark, and I wish more delicacy was given to the story of Belle's abuse. It was an interesting read, and I'll most likely pick up volume 2.

3.5 stars.

“You're pathetic. You got comfortable being the victim. You liked being in the cage your father made you.”

The manga was interesting and the mystery was fascinating though so far, more questions are introduced with not much answers yet. I’m really interested in the plot and as to what will happen next but I don’t really much care for the characters yet, especially Belle. I mean, her personality and thinking are understandable from the abuse she suffered from her father but her personality and actions were all over the place. There’s not much world building since she was locked inside the house for years. Overall, I definitely will continue to see how the curse came to be and what happened to her mother.

Trigger warning: verbal abuse, gaslighting, and neglecting Belle ever since she was a child.

Thank you NetGalley for providing me with a digital copy for an honest review.

I was not sure what to expect from this. I am not particularly familiar with Manga, but I am a fan of any Beauty and the Beast retelling, especially one with a dark twist! The artwork is stunning and definitely hooks you in.

This was such a waste potential in my opinion. Like I was thrilled to have found a Beauty and the Beast mangag retelling and hoping that it would be good but ended up being disappointed. I would say I got bored at it and just didn't care at all.

TW: Verbal abuse from a parent, body image issues, and gore

Thank you Netgalley and Kodansha for the eARC! This was such an interesting manga to read and it definitely surprised me at some parts. The Beast was so sassy and brutally honest—I really enjoyed reading all parts when he was speaking. I wasn't expecting this to be gory at all but holy moly the violence in this manga escalated hella fast. you'll probably know what I mean if you read a certain part near the beginning. I want to continue this manga mostly out of curiosity with what happens next and because of how much I love the Beast. I really hope Belle also heals a bit from the verbal trauma her father put her through. Also I like how there's possibly another beast which adds a spin on the traditional plot of Beauty and the Beast. Overall a fascinating manga.
