New York City....The Wicked City!
This book oscillates between two story lines, both set in New York. Ella, in 1998, recently divorced after finding her husband sleeping around with ladies of the night, and Geneva Rose in 1924, living it up in secret jazz clubs trying to forget her horrible abusive step father she left back in rural Maryland.

I had this one on my shelf for ages and wish I'd read it sooner. I was fascinated moreso with Geneva's story as the prohibition and the speakeasy's of that era have always been interesting and intriguing to me. I found her sassy and mischievous, posing for salacious pictures and living it up in such a carefree manner. Ella's story was also interesting but I wished there was more tying the two storylines together. I'd hoped for a little more supernatural maybe as it seemed eluding to that possibility but it never came to fruition. Overall I liked this very much and would absolutely read more from this series (and I don't do series usually because it's tough to commit to that much)! I'd recommend to fans of historical fiction who are interested in prohibition era stories.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read in exchange for my honest review.

The Wicked City is a wonderful piece of historical fiction, expertly weavign together two timelines and giving us two amazing, strong, female characters to fall in love with. Alternating between Ella and Gin, the story takes us back and forth between the 90s and the 20s flawlessly, with richly written characters and intriguing stories. I can't wait to read the rest of the series.

I overall enjoyed it, but it felt like two different books. The two timelines didn't come together as well as I would have liked. I did really love Gin's voice, and I will pick up the next in the series to have more of her.

Beatriz Williams has written a “spicy” first book to a new series called THE WICKED CITY. Red headed Geneva nicknamed Gin/Ginger is the main character in the 1920s Prohibition Era in New York City.. The second storyline takes place in the 1990s. Ella is an auditor and just left her husband when she caught him with a prostitute.it seeed that more attention was paid to Ella’s story. This would be a fun book to read on the beac or n a rainy day. I have mixed feelings about the story and hope that the second book in the series wal clear up some of my questions.

I picked up The Wicked City based on the author Beatriz Williams. The description on NetGalley (see below) had me expecting a dual timeline POV with a little mystery connected to the historical fiction.

While I enjoyed reading this book, and absolutely enjoyed following Ginger as a character, I wished there had been more flipping back and forth between timelines.

Ginger (“Gin”) was a unique character to be the main character. She is an independent woman and very strong willed. I would get so sucked into the Jazz Age, Prohibition era with Ginger that I would have that hangover when I was back int the real world. However, when the POV would change to the current time line, it felt shocking. Especially since such a long time spent in the 20s with Ginger, then by the time the timeline switched, I had forgotten what had happened.

I really appreciated the author’s note at the end, that she tried to replicate an Appalachian accent when writing Ginger and her family. And, although the dialect has evolved and changed since the 1920s, she tried to capture the basic ways of speaking.

While this book left me wanting more, I really did enjoy spending in the Jazz Era with Ginger, and thought that storyline could have stood alone.

I love Beatriz Williams and I loved this book! I can’t wait to read the rest of the series! I loved learning about the prohibition and I also liked the modern story.

I have never read any books by Beatriz Williams., but after reading the synnopsis of this book I felt it sounded very intriguing and something I would like. While I liked the book quite a bit, I wasn't blown away by it. The dual timeline was sometimes a bit confusing, 1920's and 1990's, but featured two strong and independent women in each time. I couldn't find myself really becoming fully involved with the overall story. Other reviewers have totally loved this book, and I can understand why they might. There is a good entertainment value with the activities in the storyline during Prohibition in the 1920's timeline, which had my favorite parts of the book. Thank you to NetGalley and Williams Morrow and Custom House. for the opportunity to read and review this advance reader copy. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own. #TheWickedCity #NetGalley.

Courtesy of Netgalley I received the ARC of The Wicked City by Beatriz Williams and realized I overlooked reading it then. I did enjoy this dual narrative story set in the 1920's Jazz Age and Prohibition, and contemporary NYC. Capturing the vibrant spirit of the musical era, and weaving together the lives and legacies of two strong women characters, the author brought this tale to life. First in a trilogy, I am interested in reading more!

A dual timeline set in modern-day and the 1920s. A woman who leaves her husband in the 1920s and discovers something lurking in her basement that used to be a speakeasy. Put together a flapper, Prohibition agent. and a woman with something to prove and you have a great book. It's well-written, fun, and easy to read.

This is the first time I have read anything by Beatriz Williams. I'm not sure if this is her usual style or not. While I liked this book, I am left with questions. I guess that is the style of books written in installments. Since I don't usually read books in a series, I will be left hanging. The Wicked City takes place in two timelines, the 1920s and the late 1990s. Two very different stories with events that I did not see coming. For people who like to read series of books, this could be a good read. It was entertaining but not entirely resolved for me. Many thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for the free ebook in exchange for my honest opinion.

I have read only one other Beatriz Williams' books, Her Last Flight. I enjoyed that book, so I was expecting to enjoy this one. That didn't happen. I just could not connect or care about the characters or the story line.

Williams never disappoints! All her books feature head-strong women and this one is no exception. I loved the alternating stories of a woman in modern times and a feisty redhead during prohibition. Will definitely being reading the follow-up books.

The Wicked City is a dual timeline book, focusing on Ella in the present, and Ginger "Gin" in the past, in prohibition times. For some reason, although I read the whole book, it just didn't really grab me. Maybe it is the author, or the topic, but I just couldn't really get into the book. I have had some trouble with Beatriz Williams books in the past (for some reason, either the timelines or the topics do not always seem to grab me) but I think I might be in the minority there.

I didn't really love the characters, and thought that there were parts of the plot that were either overexplained or underexplained. All said and done, this was not for me. I really was looking forward to this book, since I know it is a trilogy, but I think I'm going to skip the last two books.

Thank you to the author, publisher and Net Galley for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I have enjoyed all of the books by this author I have read so far and this one did not disappoint. I love dual timeline historical fiction, although I am a little annoyed that a lot of the connections won’t be apparent until future books. I thought it started a bit slowly, but I did enjoy the ending. I found some of the 1920’s lingo to feel a little forced, but I loved the glimpse into prohibition times. Ginger is a good character although I didn’t really care about her until about halfway through the book. This book had romance, mystery, ghosts, chase scenes, and so much more. I’ll definitely be looking up the second book in this series.

Beatriz Williams, and this boom is no execration. Historical fiction focused on an exiting time in American history, with colorful and compelling charachters. A great read!

I love Beatriz Williams book's, but I struggled with this book. I kept putting it down and coming back to it hoping I would get hooked which never really happened for me. The story alternates timelines between the 1920’s prohibition scene with a strong protagonist, Gin, and 1998 with a woman named Ella. I felt that independently the story lines were ok but they never really tied together with each other. The ending was just ok and didn’t make me want to pick up the next book in the series.

You know that wonderful feeling when you love a book so much and then find out it's a series?? That's me with this book! I loved the voice of Gin. It was sassy and fun and really brought me fully into the time period of flappers and Prohibition. I can't wait to read the rest of the series to see what happens next. I love reading about the 1920s in New York and this book was a wonderful example of that. I will definitely recommend this book and look forward to reading more by this author. I received a free copy of this book from netgalley and the publisher in exchange for my honest review.

The lives of Ella Hawthorne and Geneva "Gin" Kelly develop in alternating timelines in this enjoyable, fast-paced book by Beatriz Williams.

Ella lives in modern day New York City. She has just moved into her apartment after leaving her husband. He meets Hector the superintendent who warns her to not go to the laundry room at night. Geneva lived in Prohibition New York City and was a frequent patron at the Christopher Club. There is mystery and romance in each of these women's lives.

I thoroughly enjoyed this read. Beatriz Williams does it again bringing characters to life and showcasing the most interesting aspects of life.

Thank you NetGalley and William Morrow Books for the opportunity to read this book.
