Absolutely fantastic!
Loreth Anne White did it again. I was totally hooked by this story, one with perfect lives that are not so perfect. A women enters a perfect neighborhood and cracks its apparent perfection. But this woman dies and almost everyone had a reason for killing her….
I couldn’t stop reading until the last page (and don’t miss the author’s note, it’s a little unsettling…)

Thank you Netgalley for the ARC! I really enjoyed this read. It was hard to put down and full of twists that I didn't see coming. I rate it a 3.7

This story is told from the viewpoints of some of the main characters over different timelines - the time before the jogger's death and now, as well as excerpts from a manuscript entitled "Taken". The story is based in part on a true crime which occurred in Medicine Hat, Alberta, in 2006. As another reviewer said, don't look it up until after you finish this book.

The book is atmospheric with well-developed characters and many threads to follow. I enjoyed it much more than I expected to and hope to read some of the author's previous works when time permits.

My thanks to Montlake via Netgalley for the opportunity to read an advance copy of this novel. All opinions expressed are my own.

4 Stars

This book right here still has my brain frazzled! You’re sucked directly into the action. Told from multiple perspectives, you’re bouncing around and wondering where this ride is going, I promise, you probably will not be able to guess.

Lily is a therapist, with an office attached to her home. She’s with a patient one morning when her husband comes home from a jog, covered in blood. The police are knocking on the door because a female jogger was found dead on the beach…..buckle up for the wild ride.
Seeing that this was based on a true crime story, I was extremely tempted to look it up before I finished and I’m glad that I didn’t.

A special thank you to NetGalley, Montlake, and Loreth Ann White for providing me with an ARC.

I am a big fan of Loreth Anne White and her dark, atmospheric, and compelling thrillers. The Patient's Secrets had multiple POVs, something I don't normally go for as it can get very confusing, especially when there's more than one timeline. Here this this narrative device clearly drives home the overall message that everyone has secrets behind the masks they choose to wear in different contexts. The plot was quite complex and it seemed everyone was a suspect and no wonder, given that one of the protagonists is a therapist, used to dealing with deep trauma and dark secrets. The twists and revelations kept coming right, left and centre and I couldn't have guessed the ending in a million years! Were the characters realistic- to be honest, I thought it was all a bit too much, but then having learnt at the end that at least a part of the story was based on true crime events, I have to say that sometimes life is stranger than fiction.
The Patient's Secret is a real treat for all readers who love a fast-paced, engaging, and multi-layered thriller.

Ooh…this one was surprisingly good simply because of the plot twists! I was quite shocked by how the story ended.

This story follows Lily who seems to be on the edge lately. She feels something is amiss but she can’t seem to figure out what. Lily has somewhat of a perfect life. She lives in an affluent area with her loving husband Tom and two beautiful children. Her career as a therapist seems to be taking off too. So what is wrong? She feels like she’s being followed and to top it off, Tom feels distant. When Tom found a woman dead at the bottom of the cliffs, he immediately became a suspect. Lily feels her world crashing down in an instant. Who is telling the truth? Who is the woman? Most importantly, who is the killer?

The plot ticks all my boxes. It was thrilling, engaging and kept me on the edge! The tensed atmosphere made the story all the more exciting. Although there were a few different POVs, they all had a reason to be there and they also added more suspense to the plot. Everyone is a suspect and they all have something to hide. I love how despite the different perspectives, it is still easy to keep track of the timeline and plot.

I also love how unpredictable the plot twists were! I was impressed with how the story came together when the secrets are revealed. I was hooked from the get go and really enjoyed reading this one. If you enjoy atmospheric thrillers, I’d recommend you give this a go.

Thank you Netgalley and Montlake for the arc.

Absolutely loved this riveting title and was so excited to include it in Scribbler's subscription box for writers. White knows how to grip readers from the very first page with her sharp prose and memorable characters. More, please!

This story was one of the most highly anticipated around Bookstagram so I had to check it out for myself as well. I have mixed feelings about it overall to be honest . I liked it and enjoyed most of the novel. There are a few things that I couldn’t get over but I am also putting it on my moods and not working my way through it as I should have done.

Very grateful to the publisher for my review copy

One of my most anticipated books of the year! She is an auto-read author for me and this one did not disappoint. This was dark, compelling, and unputdownable! The Patient’s Secret is tense from beginning to end. There are so many layers to the plot and each character is suspect. This was different from her other books but just as bingeable. 4⭐️

I was not at all disappointed by this novel; it's a fast paced thriller that keeps you guessing whodunit the entire way through! I found this one very unique and I just wanted to figure this out before the ending, but I did not. I can't wait to read more by this author!

Holy moley, what did I just read? And why did I enjoy it so much? Lol! There was never a dull moment with this one, kept me white knuckling my kindle right from the beginning.

There were so many twists and turns that the moment I thought I had something figured out, things would switch directions and I'd have to rethink everything.

And man oh man, that ending was awesome! It was shocking but it made everything make sense.

Compelling…
What secrets could possibly be worth dying for? And what secrets worth killing for? An immersive suspense, well paced and heavy with tension and a cast of credible characters. True crime inspired fiction at it’s most compelling and most tragic.

This book was fantastically written, fast-paced, full of twists, and hard to put down. It is honestly a great read in many ways, especially if you enjoy dark thrillers. That said, did I enjoy reading it? If I am honest I am not sure I did. There are triggers, triggers galore in here and that is something to be aware of. I am a horror reader and I literally just watched a horror film the other day without blinking an eye. Yet this thriller got under my skin and bothered me - perhaps because it is inspired by true events. There are just aspects about this one that make it an especially tough read.

If I put the subject matter aside however, this is very much a page-turner. It had me guessing every step of the way. It is not often these days that I can be surprised, but I was surprised by this one several times. Perhaps because some of it was a little too much. There are about six different reveals here that start to become borderline unbelievable. Still they were definitely solid surprises.

I might recommend looking up the true events this book is based on before reading. Trust me that you will still be surprised and it will not spoil anything for you. If you are ok with reading about the subject matter based upon that, then I think this will definitely be a thriller for you. It is engaging each step of the way and trying to unravel the mystery of it all is not easy either. It is sure to keep you on the edge of your seat.

Let me start off by saying I love Loreth Anne White's writing. I have read five other books written by her and four of them I rated 5 stars and the fifth book was 4 stars. Sadly, this was my least favorite.

The chapters were told in different POVs but they also jumped from present day to two months before she dies to present day to four weeks before she dies to the day she dies, which made it confusing to read. I actually thought Phoebe was going to die when the chapter was her POV and it said eighteen days before she dies. There are so many characters in this story, you will not be able to figure out the killer. Unfortunately, all the characters were unlikable.

I will definitely read more from this author.

Told from various points of view which makes it all that much more exciting since there are overlapping clues. This was a book that I had a hard time putting down but at the same time I wanted to savor it. Great characters and quite the rollercoaster of events leading up to a climatic conclusion. I voluntarily reviewed an advance readers copy of this book.

One of my favorite suspense authors has done it again. Her latest is a twisty-turny tale of community and murder. A must read.

I am a huge Loreth Anne White fan, her books are an auto buy for me. I know that she’ll give me clues throughout the novel, there’ll be threads trailing throughout it, and I still won’t get who did it.

There were a number of times that I had to go back and double check that I’d read what I thought I had. There’s times when you go “oh this is an important plot point” but you have no idea what it actually means, or “oh, this is a clue” but you still have no idea what it’s a clue to.

I’m a mum, I have a 4yo boy and a 6yo girl. Honestly, some of the hardest parts of this novel weren’t to do with who was murdered and how that affected their family. It was the young son of one of the suspects and how he felt; the loneliness, the fear. It was described so well and really affected me.

I highly recommend this book. Absolutely brilliant

What if the past you're so desperately trying to hide catches up with you? That is the premise of The Patient's Secret. I found this book enjoyable and there were many twists and turns.

I really enjoyed this book. This was a small, close knit neighborhood drama of the best kind, and what made it even better is that it is based on a true crime story.

Lily is conducting an early morning therapy session at her home office when her husband comes back from a run in the rain, closely followed by police knocking at the door. On his run her husband Tom came across a dead body. Things escalate from here when they figure out who the body is.

The story has dual time lines from present day, to a countdown of sorts, counting down to the death. It is very easy to follow and especially easy to get caught up in this story. Once I got to a certain point I couldn't put it down and felt myself constantly thinking of what was going to happy. It took everything in my not to google what the story was based on (and after reading the author's note, I felt even more compelled to google)

I would highly recommend this to not only true crime fans but suspense fans in general. Will definitely look out for more by White in the future. Thank you to net galley and the publisher for this advance copy!
