🌸She Gets The Girl 🌺
By Rachel Lippincott & Alison Derrick
Simon & Schuster YA (April 5, 2022)

Quick synopsis:
Two girls: Alex (smooth talking girl with an alcoholic mother that she has to keep picking up after) and Korean born Molly (quietly crushing on a girl that went to her High School and is now at the same College as her) meet up randomly at a frat party. Let’s say, it was not love at first sight, but in order to win back her musician girlfriend, Alex decides to tutor Molly into how to get the girl you’ve liked for years, to like you back.
What starts as a little “how to win a girl” becomes a friendship that is honest, real and supportive. And perhaps with a little bit more (no spoilers).

Ok ok, spoiler: I loved it. 5 darn stars of romance. There was witty banter, enemies-to-friendship-love, there was depth in both Alex’s character (dealing with an alcoholic mother) and Molly (finding her way out of her shell). I didn’t want this to end! Just gave me all the happy feels of romance between two girls who realize love is based on connections and not flirty lust.

Ps. If you enjoyed Red, White and Royal Blue, you will LOVE this. If you enjoy romance with representation, you will LOVE this. But mostly if you just like seeing two ppl find each other, faults/hang ups and all, you’ll love this one.

New Adult, college love, self-discovery, roller skating, food truck, books, LGBTQIA.

What a fantastic read. I adored the story of fun, easy-going, flirty Alex Blackwood and shy, anxious, loner Molly Parker. Sassy Alex needs to prove to “a sort of on a break” girlfriend that she can be selfless and open up, yet she is scrambling to adjust to life away from her alcoholic mother. Molly who’s pinned after Cora throughout high school is hoping to break free from her Wallflower ways to find out who she really is. The two meet, butt heads but strike a deal to help Molly gain confidence and become Cora’s girlfriend by the time Alex’s sort-of girlfriend is in town for a gig. Their adventure in self-discovery, friendship and love is sweet and fun and I loved every single minute of it. I liked the ending but I also wish there was more as I wasn’t ready to say goodbye to Molly and Parker and their shenanigans.

Special thank you to #NetGalley, #RachaelLippincott & #AlysonDerrick and #SimonSchusterBooksForYoungReaders for sharing this digital copy for my honest thoughts on #SheGetsTheGirl #AlexAndMollyForever

Thank you so much to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with an eARC of this.

Pretty quick read, with lovable and engaging characters, and some of my favourite tropes :) AND it's sapphic. I don't know why I thought this would be na but it was actually ya so if smut isn't for you I think this would be the book for you! Only criticism I had was that the ending and resolution felt rushed to me.

Thanks to NetGalley, I received an early copy of this book. I really, really enjoyed it! I wish there was more of an epilogue to the story. But overall, I liked the premise of the story. I related to Molly the most and sadly, have experienced Natalie more times than I'd like to admit.

This book was everything! I absolutely LOVED every part of this book. There’s just the perfect amount of angst, there's a lot of humour, and the slow-burn romance is perfection. Alex has difficulty connecting with others, and her relationship with her girlfriend is on the rocks. She needs to convince her girlfriend that she can make–and keep–a friend. Molly has anxiety and wants things to be different in college than they were in high school, where her mother was her best friend and she spent way too many evenings curled up with her label maker. Her high school crush is going to school at the same university, and Molly has decided to make her notice her. But how can she do that? With Alex’s help of course!
There are so many freaking cute and humorous parts to the book. Molly is so adorably awkward in literally every social situation, and Alex is the exact opposite. (The words too cool for school come to mind, LOL). One thing I find annoying about many Sapphic romances is that they’ll market themselves as "enemies-to-lovers" but then the main characters will bicker a smidge before tumbling into a relationship within a few chapters. In this book, the build up is a slow burn and Molly and Alex genuinely dislike each other at first. But they both need each other, and as they start to dig beneath the surface, they start to lose sight of the ridiculous schemes that brought them together in the first place.
I cannot emphasize enough how good this book was! I loved the writing style, which was so casual and the tone fit the story perfectly. The chemistry between Molly and Alex was superb, and the book was written by a real-life married couple, which makes it even cuter!
I would give this book more than five stars if I could! I highly recommend it!

This was one of my most anticipated reads of 2022 and wow, it didn’t disappoint. This book felt like a love letter to a city and university as well as a sweet sapphic romance. It had the perfect balance of serious, funny, and heartfelt moments. The banter and dialogue between characters was so well written, and the two authors styles and voices blended together in such a perfect way.

Alex and Molly learn to open up to others and grow together , in such a beautiful way. This book also portrays anxiety and difficult family life in an accurate and non-stigmatizing way, which was super enjoyable to read!

I definitely recommend this book!

Definitely check trigger warnings as there is detailed descriptions of alcoholism.

4.5*

Wow, I really enjoyed She Gets the Girl! To start off with, the cover art is adorable. In all honesty this is one of my first LGBTQ+ reads, and it was such a fun and wholesome one. This story follows Alex Blackwood, desperate to prove to her ex-girlfriend Natalie that she is a caring person that can make and keep friends; and Molly Parker, hoping to get over her social anxiety and finally get with her long standing crush Cora. After a chance meeting at a party, the two decide to help each other out, and end up discovering a lot along the way.

This story follows Alex and Molly’s journey starting off as freshman in college, and it was really refreshing to see a YA book set in college instead of highschool. I was able to relate to the characters a bit more, even though they were always hanging out and having fun, despite Alex being in pre-med and working!? Asides from that, seeing their growth from their high school selves to their new-found college selves was great. I do think Molly got over a lot of her social anxiety fairly quickly considering how awkward she was in the beginning, and whether or not Alex grows out of her “flirty” and toxic self is yet to be seen, since the book was quite a slow burn.

There are some heavier topics in the book as well, some more flushed out than others. Molly and her struggles with her mother and internalized racism could have been addressed a bit more, but I did appreciate the way things worked out with Alex and the struggles her mother was facing. While I don’t want to give spoilers, I will be posting content warnings at the end of the review.

My favourite side character is Jim! I would not have trusted him at first, but Alex is clearly braver than I am. The way he looks after her really touched my heart, especially knowing her history. I wish I could try some of his fresh-cut fries!

Molly and Alex really developed a beautiful friendship and bond. I loved so many of their scenes, and I am a lover of all things teasing and banter, which was abundant in this book. The way they open up to each other and feel comfortable with the other made me feel their feelings through the screen! While the ending with Natalie did seem thrown in at the last minute, I can understand not knowing something is wrong until you know what feels right. This book was awesome, and I recommend it to any rom-com and YA lovers!

CW: references to parent abandonment, alcoholism, parental neglect, references to race-based hate crimes, internalized racism

I was given an ARC of this book in exchange for a review and by golly I feel so blessed

This book managed to be romantic, captivating and super enjoyable! If you’ve seen any kind of romance movie ever or consumed any kind of typical romance books, the plot of this book does not surprise you in the least. However the fact that they managed to make it their own story, one that I was looking forward to, one that I could barely put down, is a true sign that it has its own legs to stand on!

Dual POV books with two different authors are always difficult for me to review because I feel like at times one author will overshine the other but that was simply not the case here the authors worked incredibly well together to bring both characters to life.

Our one character Alex is cool, flirty, and struggling to pay rent. she’s got a troubled past, she has issues with intimacy, and when we read from her point of view we are able to understand all of this. When we see her from other peoples points of view we can see that she’s very good at hiding that!

On the other hand Molly is extremely introverted, incredibly awkward, and just trying to really find herself and her first year of university. I felt like her experience is something that a lot of people going into secondary education can understand.

The author‘s did a good job of addressing issues such as alcohol abuse in family members and generational trauma. While they weren’t the main focusses they were things that impacted our main characters lives and they were addressed, maybe not fully fixed but there was discussion around them that I thought was important.

I was rooting for these two really hard and I am so glad that I got to read this book. If you’re looking for a sapphic romance novel where there is no homophobia and you just get to enjoy two women being in love this is definitely going to be a book you need to pick up!

From the start, I fell for these characters. They were so likeable, and I was just rooting for them all the way. I absolutely loved seeing their connection grow, it was just so cute. You could tell they just needed each other, and they were helping each other without them even knowing. It was so amazing seeing Molly and Alex grow as people. Molly was overcoming her social anxiety and Alex was able to slowly open herself up emotionally to people. They both became confident in themselves and started to believe in themselves more. The ending too, I need MORE!

Thank you to Netgalley and Publisher for this ARC!

Lipppncott has done it again and this time with a writing partner! Much like The Lucky List my heart is left full and warm with this cute and fluffy romance!

Molly is going into her first year of university and she is determined to conquer her social anxiety and get the girl of her dreams. The only problem is, she has absolutely no idea how to get a girls number let alone ask her on a date. That is, until she meets Alex, the cool suave mysterious girl. Alex, determined to prove she is a good person, offers to coach Molly on all things dating and socializing.

Alex was truly my favourite character! Every time her and Molly interacted I was so drawn in. Her whole character was really well rounded and developed.

Molly was equally well developed. I thought she was very relatable as someone who has social anxiety and went through university struggling to make friends.

I thought the story touched on some important and heavy topics so TW for alcoholism, racism, and neglect.

Overall I really enjoyed this story and would recommend!

She Gets the Girl is a sweet read, that really packs a punch with some emotional things for both characters. The book may be pegged a romance, but it is more than that. It is about two people learning who they are and coming into their own. One of the things I liked about this book is that it is a YA book, but focussed on the years of starting college. It is a beautiful coming of age, rom-com that is sweet and full of emotion.

I loved the characters in this book. Alex and Molly are wonderfully developed with their own personalities and voices. I loved how unique these two characters were. How they set out for college with two ideas of the people they would become and how they supported each other to become that. I also loved the friendship they developed. Alex's backstory made me cry, she was so grown as a young woman starting college. I also felt for Molly, managing her own anxieties. I saw a lot of growth for both of these young women throughout the story. It was beautiful.

Yes, some of the story was predictable, as all rom-coms really are, but it was sweet and lovely. There were so many parts of this book that just made me laugh out loud, and mostly it was just the banter between Alex and Molly. We really knew they were meant for each other, before either of them realized it.

This was a great book and I look forward to reading future Alyson Derrick books, and more of Rachel Lippencott. Both authors have unique voices in their writing and I loved the story they created. Thank you to NetGalley and Simon & Schuster Canada for an advance copy of this book in exchange for an open and honest review. All opinions are 100% mine.

This was such a sweet little read. I don't often read YA romances but this one caught my eye and I'm glad I picked it up. I loved the premise of this book. The main characters were enjoyable to read about and the plot was developed really well. This book had so many heart-warming moments throughout but it also touched on some hard topics, which I did appreciate. I also really enjoyed how the plot was told both through Molly and Alex. I love dual POVs.

Overall, this was a great read. There were so many wonderful messages in this book that I feel are very important. Although this book is targeted toward a YA audience, I think it is something that could be read and enjoyed by all. I loved this one!

Do you enjoy the following: sapphic joy, simple and easy romcoms, collage love, coming of age stories, numerous queer characters?
Then chances are this book is perfect for you. Following Molly and Alex as they strive out on their own, away from home, and have their own set missions. They find each other, and while it probably isn’t the easy start, they make it work. This book is quirky, easy, and full of love. I didn’t stop smiling the entire time.
This definitely needs to be on your spring 2022 radar!!

the story was a little all over the place, at some point.
but overall, I enjoyed the book thoroughly!

Lets start with that this is a YA book, there is nothing explicit that would make it inappropriate for someone around 13 or 14 to read it.

While I usually love what this author writes, this book just didn't wow me the way her other books have. The story was good but there was nothing that stood out to me, nothing that me hold my breathe or throw the book across the room, but again that could be my age, I am nowhere near being a young adult.

Even though I didnt really enjoy the book, it is only my opinion, take the time and read it for yourself, you may see something in the book that I didnt.

This book was just so cute. Was it predictable, yes. But did I love it? ABSOLUTELY! It had me grinning like a little girl throughout It's an enemies to friends to lovers so how could I not!

Alex Blackwood is a strong headed flirt that wants to let someone in but doesn't know how. Molly Parker is a shy girl who is in love with her high school classmate. When they meet they hatch a plan together; Molly helps Alex prove to her girlfriend she can be faithful. while Alex helps Molly open up and get her dream girl. What could possibly go wrong huh?

I will say, I did think there would be more rollerskating storyline from the cover, but the skating that did happen? Hands down my favourite moments - and honestly a dream date. I really feel for Molly, and seeing her open herself up throughout was so lovely to see as a shy person myself.

I really enjoyed this book, it was sweet and showed two girls becoming more than friends. This started out rocky but it tugged on your emotions the whole time. I really liked Alex and felt for her, she is a big flirt with a heart of gold and had a hard life growing up. Molly is a book nerd who does not know how to talk to people. They are complete opposites. I loved how Alex gets Molly to agree to let her help her get the girl. It was funny yet sad in some parts. I have to say I love the ending and my favourite character was Jim. A rough and tough guy who owns a food truck but also has a heart of gold. This was a beautiful story. I now have new authors to add to my list.

I really enjoyed this! I’ll never get tired of reading Sapphic Romance and there’s something just so fun about reading stories set during freshman year of American college. Plus, I love an attempted 5-step-plan involving romantic hijinks, it’s what every RomCom needs.

I loved how Alex and Molly’s relationship was built. From reluctant allies who agreed to a deal to help each other get what they wanted, to friends who genuinely trusted each other and wanted to help, to lovers who see and accept each other for who they are not who they want their partner to be.

The book also deals with some heavier topics such as an alcoholic mother and internalised racism (Korean) but I felt they were handled really well.

Finally, I love how the co-authors are married in real life! The main characters are clearly based on themselves which is why the chemistry and banter work so well on-page. But I will point out that had I not known the authors were basing the main characters heavily off themselves I wouldn’t have known what they were supposed to look like. The character descriptions really should have happened earlier than they did.

I received a copy of She Gets the Girl by Alyson Derrick and Rachael Lippincott
from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

Overall I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. Although it took a little bit of time to get fully invested in Alex and Molly's story, once invested it was impossible to put this book down.

Both Alex and Molly were relatable in one way or another and their experiences growing closer together helped with character growth. Although the story only takes place over the course of about a month, the character growth is profound and not trivial. I would love to have seen more both of them making more friends though. I also enjoyed the pacing and progression of the story.

Overall I recommend this book to anyone looking for a relaxing, relatable read.
