I thoroughly enjoyed this read, though not as much as Black Sun. I still recommend it for those who love the characters and want to know what will happen next.

I knew it would be tough for Roanhorse to follow up such a phenomenal first book in the series, but she managed to deliver! Some parts were a bit slow but I understand that many of these passages were setting up for future payoffs (and also? I am okay with languishing in this phenomenal universe with these absolutely delightful and complex characters).

So I will admit that I had a difficult time reading this book, it took me a while to get through it. To be fair this is mostly my fault. I found that while reading the sequel, the first book should be super fresh in my mind. This of course caused me to not enjoy it as much because I had a hard time remembering the first book and remembering names, the world, events, and characters. However, once I got the hang of this world again I had a great time. I will absolutely be rereading this in the future because in the end I absolutely enjoyed myself and was happy to re-enter this world and be with these characters again. so bottom line, unless you have a super great memory ( unlike me) make sure you reread the first book. Hopefully, like me, you will come to really enjoy the sequel as well.

Black Sun was one of my favorite books of last year and I was very excited for this sequel. But it somehow didn't live up to my expectations. I almost felt like nothing much happened.
But I can't clearly say if it was the fault of the book or if I wasnt in the right headspace. Maybe if I get the chance to reread it in the future, I will change my opinion.

I took so long to read this book because I was just so disappointed in it. The first novel, Black Sun was so good! The ending was an avalanche that the book did a great job building up to. This book purely exists as a bridge book between the first and the next. It's there to get the characters where they need to be for the next avalanche to happen. It's there to build the world so the reader has the knowledge for the political and magic system make sense and to understand the tensions building up. The first half of this book is recovery of the events of the first book, and the later half is building to the next. It's fine, but I wanted something more exciting to read. Especially since I have to wait for the third book now! I hope I don't forget all the stuff here; I don't want to reread this. It is possible I have an appreciation of this book upon a reread after reading the third and knowing what happens next. For now, though, I have no desire. I do hope that the third book doesn't let me down after this much buildup.

I'm also really disappointed in the direction of Xiala's character here. She really turned into a lovesick woman missing her Serapio. The romance in the first novel was there, but it wasn't a distraction to the entire plot, and Xiala and Serapio had their own motivations separate from the romance. Serapio continues to exist well on his own (for obvious reasons without spoilers), but Xiala had nothing going for her other than missing him. It was sad.

Fantastic sequel. I really enjoyed this one a lot and I a really do enjoy good world building and great characters. This book has it all. I would highly recommend if you enjoy fantasy with a rich background that is well written.

Contains minor spoilers.

This book moved at a really good clip and definitely did not suffer from middle child syndrome :) I loved that we got an eagle's look at the continent and all the political machinations going on throughout the land and peoples. At times I felt like there was too much going on and was a bit hard for me to follow, but from reading other people's reviews, I think that's a me problem :) I loved Serapio and wish there was more on him as a person, and I don't recall the name spelling, but Xiala (the Teek character)- I wish there was more of them together. I know this is a far cry from a romance story- this is high fantasy- but I would've loved to see more of Serapio and Xiala on the page together and not separated by a continent. They have no clue what's going on in each other's lives. I loved the character development with Niramba and the ending between her and Serapio was perfection. Definitely looking forward to the concluding book!

Leaving reviews on goodreads and amazon.

My rating: 4 of 5 stars--

We pick up shortly after the events at the end of the first book as Serapio recovers after being saved by the sacrifice of his crows. Fevered Star is a worthy sequel to Black Sun, though it was much slower paced and felt like merely a small chunk of the story. Be prepared for introductions to new political factions with brief looks into their motivations. It felt like a lot of setting up for the next book. While the narrative covered wide geographic territory, it felt limited to a pretty short temporal time span.

A few more specific thoughts:

-Serapio is dealing with a lot of angsty identity issues--is he a vengeful, violent weapon or a sweet, quiet young man who yearns for a life of love and simple joys?
-Naranpa gets more meaningful treatment this time around, though I found her reconnection with her brother kind of perfunctory--just didn't pack the emotional punch I think it was meant to. Her evolving relationship with Serapio was great, though.
-As always, Xiala's storyline was the best and I wanted MORE OF IT. Readers will learn more about her banishment and the Teek. I was disappointed at the lack of Xiala/Serapio chemistry in this installment though.
-There's a little more info on Lord Balam, but I foresee his dream walking being a big part of the plot in the next book.

Many thanks to Gallery Books and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this book.

Thank you Netgalley for the free ARC in return for an honest review.

I loved the first book and expected to love this one. But there was too much getting the characters ready for book three (Was book 2 necessary? Does this series really need to be a trilogy?). Suddenly it seemed there were too many characters and they are still waiting to meet for the final....something. I'd still like to know how it all ends and what becomes of Serapio (can he be redeemed??).

Don’t be fooled by how long it took me to finish this book. I loved Fevered Star! Even though I didn’t love it as much as Black Sun, I still really enjoyed it. I loved the action, surprises, and how different characters from different POVs got to meet each other. The ending was NOT how I saw it concluding, especially with Xiala’s POV, but I can’t wait until the next book to see where the journey will pick up from.

Fevered Star, the second installment in the Between Earth and Sky trilogy is an amazing follow up to Black Sun. Black Sun ended on a cliffhanger that had me so excited for Fevered Star and I definitely wasn't disappointed.

Fevered Star follows various characters like the first book, one of them being completely new. All of the characters are making their way through the aftermath of everything that happened in book one. We find our characters making new alliances and taking their powers into their own hands. We also see these characters having to face people from their past, which was so intriguing to read! (I'm trying to be as spoil free as possible but WOW!)

The unique world Roanhorse has built, as well as the lively characters this story follows make this series one of my favorites in recent memory. If you liked Black Sun, I think you'll devour Fevered Star like I did. I can't wait to be back in this world in August 2023 with The Mirrored Heavens!!!!

Roanhorse's next novel, Fevered Star, is a must-read for everyone wanting to continue the series.. To imply that it’s just for science fiction fans would diminish the well-crafted world, creative characters, and poignant dialog that Roanhorse has created. This is, indeed, the book you’re looking for.

FEVERED STAR was one of my most anticipated reads of 2022. It is a deeply satisfying second book in this series and I can't wait for more. The only downside was the amount of time between books so I forgot some of the BLACK SUN storyline but Roanhorse has a way of reminded you of key plot points and characters without hitting you over the head with them.

Black Sun came in strong & Fevered Star is a bit of a more subdued sequel though absolutely had its moments here and there. Overall, it felt a bit slower than the first, but there was a lot of great exposition & build up in the story. Roanhorse writes some of the best characters & worlds I've read in recent times -- and now I anxiously await the final installment!

I meannn at this point Roanhorse can do no wrong in my book🤷🏾‍♀️

The events of Fevered Star picks up right after what happened in the last chapter of Black Sun. We are thrown into a divided and fearful Tova, the treaty is now void and everybody is scheming.

Fevered Star focused more on the politics of The Meridian and I must admit that this us something I enjoyed immensely. This book dives more into the lore/history of The Meridian and with the Treaty being void we get to see more of the magic system.

We are introduced to some new faces (SN: as much as I love the male characters in this book, it was really the women who were the star of the show and I absolutely can't wait to get more of the Teek and Spearmaidens in the next book), and some that we meet before in Black Sun.

I wasn't a big fan of Nara when I first read Black Sun, but I am pleased with her growth in Fevered Star and I'm a lil bit excited to see what becomes of her character in book 3.
As always I want to give Serapio and Xiala the biggest hug.

The sun is in a permanent eclipse and the ruling class in the city of Tova has been slaughtered. Now Naranpa, is reckoning with surviving an assassination attempt, Serapio with having simultaneously fulfilled and not fulfilled his life's purpose, and Xiala adrift once more. Meanwhile, the powers that be are conspiring towards war.

The book is all atmosphere and world building. We spend a lot of time we each of our main characters as they are grappling crises of faith, but the plotting felt very slow to me, potentially because of how much world building writing is spread throughout the book. It's great, because it creates texture in the world, but as a result the story really dragged for me. The last hundred or so pages were excellent and sprinting, I just wish we got there sooner and then could continue in the story. Overall, still recommend.

Thank you to Sagasff for partnering with B2Wweird for a book tour! And thank you to Netgalley for the e-arc.

Are you still chasing the feeling of reading Game of Thrones? You want multiple POVs all competing for the throne? Political wheelin’ and dealin’? A magic system different from what you’ve seen before? Then I have the book for you!

Fevered Star is the second book in the Between Earth and Sky series. This is a fantasy series that takes place in the pre-Columbian Americas. The world building and magic systems are fantastic, and I love all of the characters! The ending was absolutely incredible.

Now, I’ve said many times that I only have the attention span for a story that involves two people falling in love. I don’t even go for the romantacy books. I want the entire plot to be two people falling in love, thank you very much. So this book didn’t hit quite the way the last one did. I wish I was the kind of reviewer who wrote about lush prose or whatever, but I’m not. It’s all mood reading and book vibes here. If you are looking for swoony love stories, this obviously is not it.

Roanhorse knocks it out of the park with this sequel, which picks up the story immediately for those who have been desperate to find out "what happens next?" Roanhorse continues to move multiple storylines towards a yet unknown outcome, while also developing the richness of the characters and this world. I am really excited about purchasing the audiobook and hearing the story in another way.

A sensational sequel! We need a book three hands down! The storytelling is so fabulous and truly wraps you up in this world. I do feel like I needed a recap cause I was a little lost. Maybe like a glossary at the beginning of who is who and how we left of?

Last year's Black Sun by Rebecca Roanhorse was a book that took my breath away. It was a new take on high fantasy that echoed with me for a long time. The Pre-Columbian America setting and coupled with magic gave us a unique setting and promoted a culture that we don't spend enough time with. The struggle for power is motivated by the desire to please the gods and control the resources, including the people. Each culture is quite different and venerates an element: the sky, the earth, the water, light and shadow. Serapio, Xiala and Naranpha were characters that echoed in my soul and I was so interested in what would happen to them after the sun has been shadowed.

The Fevered Star has a very measured pace, it gives us the same detailed, alternating POVs with each character dealing with the aftermath. At first, I was a little frustrated, looking for some real action but when it happens... it's as stunning as in the first novel. These characters and their motivations are so unique and singular. The pleathora of gender challenging characters is refreshing. Roanhorse's writing remains evocative and beautiful.

If you are a fan of high fantasy and you can step away from elves and Viking inspired settings, this series may surprise you.

Thanks to Netgalley for advanced access to this novel. All opinions above are my own.
