I enjoyed this book because I grew up during the same time period. It’s funny and sad and there is probably a story in here that every reader can relate to.

Full disclosure I had never heard of Bo Bennett. Having finished this memoir, I can’t say that I am familiar with any of his projects, and perhaps that is why it was a shock to realize this is a posthumous memoir. Written from his own experiences, the story is told from the story of James, youngest of 3 children born to 2 alcoholic parents. Growing up in the ‘70s and ‘80’s James relates his life struggles, lessons and triumphs as he moves through childhood. While some of his stories are completely bananas, others bring back memories of a childhood we’ve all had. A short and sweet look back at a life that was both ordinary, and extraordinary for the resilient, competent person that emerged. Only took about an hour to read, and made me laugh and want to cry all at the same time. Review posted to Goodreads, Instagram, Facebook, Amazon, Litsy, and LibraryThing.

I’m still not really sure if this is an actual memoir or not, but if so, it confirms my belief that not everyone needs to write a memoir. Unless you’re an extremely talented writer or have had an extraordinary life, you’re probably good to just keep a journal.
This book consists of short essays where the narrator reminisces about growing up in a small town, in a dysfunctional household, during the 80s. The book’s description lists it as “hysterically funny” but I think that’s quite a stretch. I would say marginally amusing. A get-together with his childhood friends while sharing beers and recalling the good ol’ days seems a more appropriate outlet.

I wish to thank NetGalley and Archieboy Holding LLC r Publishers for allowing me to read an advanced copy of this book. I have voluntarily read and reviewed it. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

This is a fun read and you will find yourself thoroughly entertained. It is about one boy raised in a small town in Connecticut. His family is totally dysfunctional, with both parents being alcoholics. He relates all the family scenes and all the antics a boy can encounter during his friendships, school years and social settings. It is a quick read but Bo is a fine storyteller and you read it with great enjoyment. The author says it is part fiction but the reader could not separate truth from fiction. If you enjoy a good storyteller then I encourage you to read this one.

A MOSTLY MAGNIFICENT MEMOIR-Bo Bennett

A totally fun book-1980's kid sharing his life and stories of growing up in a dysfunctional family and coming out of it ok. I received this free to my Kindle for the purpose of review.

I enjoyed the honesty and humor of the story. Refreshing to read about another boy growing up in the 1980's. I had two teenagers and two infants by the time 1990 rolled around. He shares his views as a kid and also the wisdom of the adult today.

Just a fun book well written to keep you reading

A MOSTLY MAGNIFICENT MEMOIR by Bo Bennett
This entertaining memoir reflects the life of James set in the small town of Easton in Connecticut. It was easy to imagine James and his buddies getting up to high jinks together. The story is fictionalized truth, and I was never quite sure where I was in the truth or the imagination, but I loved how the author brought his childhood memories to life.
The sad part of the story was that James had to grow up in a toxic, dysfunctional family with his parents, Fred and Delores. He used some very graphic descriptions of the chaos that ruled at home. He had an older brother John, but his older sister Annie provided the support and comfort that was lacking in the home.
James learned to hone his entrepreneurial skills and became adept as a salesman. The escapades the neighborhood boys and his friends got up to were quite remarkable in their creativity and most entertaining. It was through these ventures that he learned life lessons along the way. His lessons in love were taught by his dog, Christie, and girlfriends.
This exciting story will inspire youngsters who have grown up in less-than-ideal circumstances. This school teaches the most lessons, resiliency, entrepreneurship, survival, and relationships. I enjoyed the book with its somewhat surprising ending, which I thought was an excellent way to end such a memoir.

In this wonderfully told tale of an ordinary life, I relieved much of my childhood. Simpler time. Mischief instead of lawbreaking. Friends and adventures brought together for one more laugh, one more hug, one more spin on our bicycles. This was an enjoyable remembrance of childhood. the stories are different but in many ways the same. Thanks for the memories.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, although it turned out to not quite be what I expected. I saw 1980s and memoir and figured I would love it, so jumped right in without actually reading the description.

As I read, my cheeks hurt from smiling so much. Any child of the 1980s will definitely be able to relate to the shenanigans James and his friends got into. This book was such a delightful stroll down memory lane.

Having not read the full description, the ending was an unsuspected gut punch. However, once I got beyond the shock, I was truly touched by the enduring friendships James enjoyed throughout his lifetime.

I would definitely recommend this book.

This was a good book to pick up when I had a few minutes to spare because each of the short stories were only a few pages. A couple of them were relatable and most of them were pretty funny. Fun, light read.
