This was a fabulous book and I am just now getting to it to do the review. The story begins in the year 1999 and takes you back if you were around then to people saying there was going to be a crash, the y-2-k crash. Here you are at a Blockbuster video store and there is a horrendous crime that has taken place with only one survivor. That night though has stayed with her for all of those years. Now fifteen years later again four teenage murders this time in an ice cream store and again with one survivor. The story just has so many twists and turns that the author takes you on a wonderfully written journey that you are sad when you are finished with the book. You will be surprised though along the way and that is what will keep you going to the next page. Excellent book along with wonderful characters.

This book had an interesting plot … a copycat crime is committed where several young girls are killed. There are some nice twists and surprises here - more so than most other thrillers lately! The twists were great, but I wish they were a bit more fleshed out. Otherwise, this was a quick and fun read!

As a 90s baby I loved all the nostalgia this book gave me. There were a ton of twists throughout the book, and I found myself fully engrossed with the story line and each character. I'm super excited to get my hands on Alex Finlay's next book.

I love stories that have some 1980s/90s flair, and The Night Shift delivered. It took me a while to catch on that the Special Agent Keller is the same character from Every Last Fear. Love that little common thread (although this book is completely standalone). In this book, Finlay laid out a lot of comparisons between the Haves and Have Nots, keeping it understated yet unmissable. It was easy to pick out "who did it" and I figured that part out early on, but the mystery settled amidst a lot of action and twists.

There was quite a bit of nostalgia connected with this book and the flashbacks to Y2K. I loved the suspense in this one and the dual timelines. Alex Finlay does both so well. The final girl trope is one that can be overdone, but it was handled here so well. Loved the twists as well as the investigative elements! Can't wait for the next by this author.

Dark. Twisty. Addictive. Finlay delivers the suspense with THE NIGHT SHIFT. The author manages to captivate and keep narrative moving with expert writing and plotting.

I loved this! To be honest I don’t like the cover and thought it might be a bit cheesy because of it, but you literally can’t judge a book by its cover!
The mystery was fun to figure out and be surprised by throughout. Is definitely recommend this!

Love this book! I really enjoyed it and It's another amazing book from this author. The characters are easy to follow in. The storyline is amazingly written. I think this will make a good movie if it ever gets picked up by producers 😉

Y2K may not have had the world-wide bang for which people braced, but in one small town, the employees of a local Blockbuster video store were brutally murdered. The killer--a boyfriend of one of the employees--was caught, and the town moved on ... for fifteen years. Then, the employees of the local ice cream store are also viciously attacked. Again, one victim is left alive. The similarities tick too many boxes for law enforcement as well as for the brother of the accused.

Special Agent Sarah Keller (Every Last Fear) puts in another appearance in this throw-back thriller, and readers will find her just as practical and endearing as before. The storyline is fast, terrifying, and twisty, and the pretense--for those who grew up in the 90s especially--absolutely intriguing.

I was initially really drawn in by this, but as the book went on and things started to become more intertwined, I found myself losing interest. I think this is mostly due to the investigative crime aspects of this which I really just didn't care about. When the book started surrounding all the details of the cases instead of the characters themselves, I found it hard to stay intrigued. I did like 2/3 of the POVs but didn't care for Chris's. I did suspect the killer early on as well which made the last 1/3 of the book less exciting for me.

I really enjoyed ‘Every Last Fear” so I had my pretty high expectations for this book and I was not let down.

It was twisty, it was intense, it had multiple time lines, and multiple POVs with really interesting characters.
Everything I can ask for in a thriller.
While there were a few things I found a little (without giving spoilers) unrealistic for these characters to be doing, but I can suspend a little belief if you get me hooked enough.
Also I love the Y2K throwback. I was 11 that year so I remember it but I wasn’t really old enough to really understand the implications of everything so it’s interesting to look back now on that time as an adult.
I’m definitely going to continue reading whatever thrillers he puts out.

The Night Shift is a phenomenal thriller from start to finish. Filled to the brim with twists and a captivating plot, this one is sure to keep readers hooked. The characters are well-developed. The story is incredibly fast-paced. This is one not to be missed! Highly recommended! Be sure to check out The Night Shift asap.

I love “final girl” stories and this one didn’t disappoint. Strong female characters, a savage murder scene resembling one in the past, a psycho on the loose and a few caring, supportive men thrown in the mix and you’ve got an excellent thriller. Two timelines, multiple perspectives. This is the kind of crime fiction that I love!!! Teens murdered in a Blockbuster Video on New Year's Eve, 1999. Small town cops make quickie arrest, but the accused killer takes off and hasn't been seen since. Fifteen years later and a murderer hits the town's ice cream shop, again leaving just one teen survivor, even whispering the same words to her as he leaves that the previous survivor heard. Is the killer back? Connecting the dots between the survivors, police, and the town that is rich with secrets makes Alex Finlay's THE NIGHT SHIFT is a total page turner.

As with Every Last Fear, Alex Finlay delivers a great mystery with some thrilling moments but most importantly with characters that you find yourself rooting for. The players involved in this new mystery are surviving their individual hardships and past traumas as best they can and you cannot help but root for them. It was great to see FBI Agent Keller again. Her intelligence and competence make watching her unravel the mystery great fun, but its also equally enjoyable seeing her spend time with her husband and get ready for when her twins arrive. Hope we get to see Keller back for another mystery soon.

A strong 4-star rating for the second Finlay novel I read! I consider myself really lucky to have received an ARC, because it was a terrific thriller.

I loved the cover and, luckily, the story didn't disappoint. Three equally interesting POV, a clever plot, some twists and turns and a couple of endearing characters managed to keep me engaged all along. I thought the pacing was great and, even if I guessed the culprit early on, I don't think it was too obvious (and I still had a lot of fun reading). I guess a lot of readers are going to be surprised by this smart twist (and I envy you!).

If you liked Every Last Fear, do not hesitate to read this one!

Here’s an embarrassing confession: I read this in MARCH and never reviewed it so I went and ahead and read it again this weekend. I knew nothing before requesting this from NetGalley. I didn’t bother looking at the blurb and just assumed from the author, title and cover, that this would be yet another submission in the line of stories revolving around the the ever popular trope of the Final Girl. And I was sorta right that this did feature not only one, but TWO “final girls.”

The story here goes like this – back in the day someone pulled the ol’ stabby stab on a group of kids working at the local Blockbuster. It was assumed to be a jilted boyfriend and case closed. The only problem was said perp escaped and hasn’t even been heard from since. Fifteen years later and there’s another late-night stab session at a local ice cream parlor. In both cases only one girl made it out alive. So who did it? What’s the motive? And are the two cases connected or just coincidental???

Alright so this had a couple of things that are pet peeves for me. First, an über pregnant FBI agent (bonus this time there’s two babies in her big o’ belly rather than only one). I mean, COME ON. This chick would be on desk duty. However, it gave many Francis McDormand and John Carroll Lynch circa <i>Fargo</i> vibes so . . . . forgiven. Second, the traumatized victim from the past is now a therapist who is the only one the survivor from the present will talk to. God that is soooooo overdone. But, this damn thing was great and my guess was wrong regarding the whodunnit so I’m giving it all the Stars. A solid addition for anyone looking to add some items to their TBR for Stabtober : )
