Mairead has come home to care for her dying mother, as she slips from this world, Brigid calls out for her own mother, Ellen, someone Mairead knows nothing about. Now, Mairead is compelled to follow her mother’s last wish and heads to New York, the last place Brigid saw Ellen. Mairead has a photo of Ellen and a turquoise necklace that evidently belonged to her grandmother. If she was hoping to find a story about a loving, but misunderstood woman, she’s in for a big surprise. Her grandmother fled New York for the American west, trying to stay one step ahead of the law because of the crime she supposedly committed. Desperate to uncover the truth for her mother and for herself, Mairead digs into her family’s past, hoping to right a wrong years in the making. This is a lovely story about family and the desire to protect one’s child at any and all costs

I liked this book until about two thirds of the way when one of the main characters becomes involved with a horrible man. Why the author chose to spend so much detail on this part is unknown to me. Other than that, this book was very enjoyable. The relationship between two close friends in Ireland during the Irish Civil War was interesting as well as the descriptions of various parts of Ireland the the Pacific Northwest. I look forward to reading other books by this author.
