Book 13 in the series and it was as amazing as ever!
Jenna and Kane are called to a crime writers’ convention at the ski resort - one of the agents has been murdered and submerged in an icy lake.
After a second murder, in different circumstances, they are forced to lock down the resort and keep all the guests on site, aided by blizzards blocking the roads.,
The guests are still convinced this is all part of a murder mystery game laid on for their entertainment, but when the murderer becomes interested in Wolfe’s daughter Julie, it becomes personal.
In amongst all the action is the unfolding story of Jenna and Kane’s relationship, have they hit a rocky patch so early on?
Great writing, great plot and it was lovely to be back with old friends again.

The setting of Black Rock Falls and the characters of Alton and Kane are what keeps me coming back to this series.
I think it’s more a case of Fear-of-missing-out on something that has pulled me along this far into the series.
This story is good but it’s a bit “samey” and regular readers are going to be able to anticipate what is happening well in advance of it appearing on the page

A frozen body under ice….what happened?
Sheriff Jenna Alton and Deputy Dave Kane are about to investigate this mysterious incident. The crime occurred at a hotel where a convention is going on.. Coincidentally there is a crime writers convention going on. But, is it a coincidence? Everyone is a suspect as the investigation commences.
Many thanks to NetGalley, the publisher and author for the opportunity to read this book for my honest opinion. All opinions expressed are my own.

I've been so excited waiting for this book to arrive and I certainly wasn't disappointed! This latest Kane and Alton outing has all the usual elements of suspense, twists, diabolical murder and the teasing tentative romance between our favourite crime fighting duo . Added to that, this time we have the added frisson of the murders taking place in a ski resort where the murderer and his victims are attending a crime writers convention and they find themselves cut off in the middle of a snow blizzard. There's no escape until they can catch the murderer . Reminiscent of Agatha Christie's," And then there was none" , in regards to the claustrophobic element of being trapped with the murderer who seems able to pick off and kill his victims in the most gruesome ways, right under the noses of the detectives. However, the similarity ends there. There's nothing cosy about this mystery. It's a pure psychological thriller which has the reader literally afraid to breathe in parts . I loved the shift in Kane and Alton' s relationship and its hints of more to come ; beautifully handled ! D.K.Hood is the gift that keeps on giving . More please -soon !

Fallen Angel is the thirteenth book in the police procedural series featuring Detectives David Kane and Jenna Alton. I picked up this series with Whisper in the Night (book 6) and I also thoroughly enjoyed books seven through to twelve.

Set in Black Rock Falls, Montana, Sheriff Jenna Alton makes a very likeable detective. Jenna has a good team to handle crime in the small town, which has certainly seen more than its fair share of murders! Her deputy, David Kane is a former Special Forces marksman with exceptional profiling skills.

In this instalment, Jenna finds a single pearl earring in the frosty grass that gives them their first lead in the case of a young woman who goes missing from her hotel room at a ski resort and is found under the ice in a frozen lake. As I knew it would be, this novel was a well balanced, electrifying and solid police procedural that had me glued to the pages. I didn't want to put it down as I was desperate to know the outcome of the story. This really was a spectacular, chilling and atmospheric crime-thriller that grabbed me hook, line and sinker. All the time the tension snowballed as D.K. Hood launched at me some captivating misdirection. The writing flowed effortlessly and swiftly in a story rich in drama. I will be seeking out the first five instalments of this masterful series. A brilliant, compelling, pulse-pounding and very highly recommended crime-thriller.

I received a complimentary copy of this novel at my request from Bookouture via NetGalley. This review is my own unbiased opinion.

Fallen angel by D.K. Hood.
Detective Kane and Alton book 13.
Hurrying along the dark, snow-covered path, she knows she’s not alone when she hears the light tread of someone behind her. Panic rising in her chest, she picks up the pace. But she doesn’t even have a chance to scream before everything goes black.
Ooh my. This just gets better and better. I never want this series to end. I love Jenna and David. Another brilliant read in this series. I love it. 5*.

Another brilliant book in one of my favourite series.
Jenna and Dave are called out to a hotel complex outside Black Rock Falls as a woman is missing and a shoe has been discovered.
Her body is soon found in the lake and the team descend on the hotel.
The weather decides to create havoc and soon Jenna, Dave and some of the team are stranded at the hotel.
The body count starts to rise and they realise they are trapped there with a killer.
With the killer holding one of them in their sights, the team pull out all the stops to protect each other.
This is an action packed crime thriller that definitely had me on the edge of my seat at times.
A fantastic addition to the series.
Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book.

The thirteenth book in this series and it’s not unlucky at all. In fact this is a well plotted, fast paced, murder-mystery page turner. Sherriff Jenna Alton and Deputy David Kane are colleagues and lovers, and are trying to catch a murderer at a crime writers convention, in the worst winters weather you could imagine. The relationship between Jenna and Kane is integral to the story, but doesn’t detract from it. I loved the atmosphere created by the conventioneers, plodding on with their enjoyment and determination to carry on regardless. The murders become more grisly as the murderer becomes more confident, in fact I almost skipped over the particularly graphic description of the last murder.. A complex, thrilling, at times really gruesome read, one I couldn’t put down, and almost didn’t want to read in the middle of the night on my own. Cracking read and I can’t wait to see where Jenna and Kane go next.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this book.

When a beautiful young woman is reported missing from her hotel room on the outskirts of Black Rock Falls, Sheriff Jenna Alton and her deputy David Kane are devastated to discover her pale, lifeless body trapped beneath a frozen lake nearby. It’s Jenna who finds the single pearl earring buried in the frosted grass that gives them their first lead. Then killer strikes again, and another victim is found in one of the hotel’s lakeside cabins. Next to his bloodied body is a second pearl earring. Interviewing witnesses, Jenna discovers that both victims were seen arguing with other residents hours before their deaths. As a blizzard cuts the hotel off from Black Rock Falls, Jenna and her team are trapped with the killer & the attendees of a writers convention & it’s the agents being killed. Then she receives a terrifying call from a teenage girl who thinks the murderer was in her room as she slept.
This is the thirteenth book in the series & whilst it could be read on its own but the relationship between Jenna & David has grown & changed throughout the series. Another well written page turner, whilst not my favourite of the series it’s still a very good murder mystery. The characters have depth & the pace kept me turning the pages. There are twists & turns & the humour kept it from being dark. Roll on book fourteen
My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read

Wow this series just keeps on being absolutely great
For every new title I just can't wait!
This one is enthralling and intriguing, too,
Kept me turning the pages, all the way through.

A convention for crime authors is the setting this time
With someone out to commit more than one deadly crime.
With blizzards trapping folk in the mountain retreat
The serial killer has their victims there trapped so neat.

With crime authors a plenty, the killer has lots
Of methods to test and use from their plots.
Can Alton and Kane catch this elusive serial killer
Set in this place that's a real chiller?

In this series I really enjoy the townsfolk and place
Their relationships and the action packed pace.
There are family dramas and relationships, too
Even a different birth place for two!

The lives, relationship and romance
Entwined with the detective work all work to enhance,
My enjoyment of this read that's a definite chiller
A brilliant, enthralling murder mystery thriller.

I can't recommend this book and series highly enough so
I hope you'll also soon give it a go.
For my complementary copy of this book, I say thank you,
I throughly enjoyed reading it and this is my honest review.

The ski lodge just outside Black Rock Falls is holding a crime writers convention when one of the guests goes missing. Dakota Storm was a literary agent and when Sheriff Jenna Alton and Deputy Dave Kane find her body in a frozen lake it’s clear that she’s been murdered. Due to seriously bad weather the team have to stay at the ski resort to carry out the investigation which is not easy when everyone at the convention thinks its a murder mystery laid on for them. When further murders take place it becomes clear that someone is taking revenge on the victims but in a resort full of crime writers, agents and true crime enthusiasts the list of suspects appears to be a long one.

Another great installment in the Alton and Kane series - lots of twists and turns to keep you guessing.

Thanks to Netgalley, Bookouture and D K Hood for the ARC of this book in return for an honest review.

Detectives Kane and Alton are on the case again in book #13 of the series. This time they are snowed in at a mountain resort with a bunch of crime novelists and fans. When one of the guests is found murdered, Jenna, Dave, and the rest of the team have to keep the stranded visitors safe while also finding the person responsible. It seems like someone is taking their love of crime fiction too far.

This series never disappoints and book 13 was no exception. It kept me turning the page long after I should have been asleep. I can't wait to see what happens next with Kane and Alton.

Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for the ARC.

🌨Stranded with a killer in a blizzard: mystery and thriller lovers, beware!👀

4.5🌟 stars: macabre and marvelous😍
Only a group of crime writers, their agents and publishers could have such sang froid when fellow conference participants at an isolated ski resort are getting eliminated one by one by someone who's really getting their kicks from inflicting fear and torture! A good, old Montana blizzard arrives to keep the killer and potential victims all confined up on the mountain with Sheriff Jenna Alton and part of her team watching the death tally climb. Too many conference attendees who are potential suspects and a warped murderer who even sets the medical examiner's teenage daughter in their sights. Lots of suspense and danger. Plus, Jenny's relationship with her number two Dave Kane sees some major ups and downs. An exciting page-turner plot for sure.

I love this series about Sheriff Jenna and her team even though the killer in this book gets so gruesome with his planned murders that it was a bit too graphically cruel and violent for me (especially the final death). Medical Examiner Wolfe's daughter Julie's attitude and actions, with a decided lack of caution or concern for her own safety, drove me a little crazy. Typical teenager ignorance of her own mortality and resentment of the people trying to protect her: her every move made me roll my eyes in exasperation at Julie's stupidity!

But that's not saying I did not enjoy the story: it's suspenseful stuff!

Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for sharing a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest opinion.

Mother was anything but a loving nurturer, she was a monster. And she allowed strange men to do things to her child for the shear joy of knowing it was happening! Could anyone fault the child for becoming what she had pre-ordained?

But the antagonist is a study in psychopaths and the reasons they become who they are.
D. K. Hood builds an interesting profile of the killer as an adult. Despicable and frightening.

Trapped in a snowbound ski resort with a couple of hundred writers and publishers is the perfect target element. The victims are chosen with relish, particularly those who have dismissed those perceived a hack writer. Sure they have no redeeming qualities and wouldn’t know a good book if it fell off the shelf on them, oh yes, they have it coming!

Two of the local law enforcement members of a small mountain bound town are trapped in a blizzard when the deaths keep mounting up. The attendees at a writer’s teaching seminar are the targets of ire. In the beginning they believe that it is a game set up by the seminar sponsors.

I found the approach to the novel interesting in the authors’ attempt at getting into the head of the killer. The ending is poignant as the killer explains that the commission of these crimes fill a need more pressing than food!

Read and enjoy this book, but make sure you have the doors and windows properly secured. Checking and rechecking these items may give you a modicum of security! 4.5 stars - CE Williams

I’d like to thank Bookouture and NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read ‘Fallen Angel’, the thirteenth in the Detectives Kane and Alton series written by D K Hood, in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.

A Crime and Thriller Convention is taking place at Glacial Heights Ski Resort on the outskirts of Black Rock Falls. The body of Dakota Storm is found after being reported as missing, followed shortly by a second victim, and in both cases an earring is left in the vicinity of their bodies. With the Resort isolated by deep snow and expected blizzards, Detectives Jenna Alton, David Kane and their team have to stay at the ski resort knowing there’s a killer wandering amongst them.

I’ve really enjoyed reading ‘Fallen Angel’ with its dramatic setting, exciting plot that’s action-packed and involving, dubious characters, twists and turns, and a number of red herrings thrown in to confuse. It’s so good to read more of the relationship between Jenna and David Kane themselves, Jake and Sandy Rowley with the addition to their family, Shane Wolfe and his daughters Emily and Julie, not to mention the new deputy Zac Rio who’s caught the eye of Emily. We’ve once again been given a heart-stopping thriller that’s compulsive reading and has had me permanently attached to my Kindle, reading as fast as I can and unable to stop in case I miss an important clue. Please don’t stop adding to this series Ms Hood as I thoroughly enjoy catching up with the characters who I now consider to be old friends and am always so delighted when another instalment is being published.

I normally adore this series but this addition fell a bit short for me. Especially after having just finished the prequel about Daves life pre black rock falls (Lose your breath) which gave a real insight into his personality and who he is.

The actual crime was very miss Marple with everyone snowed into a big hotel with bodies showing up and a killer amongst them. It wasn't the most gripping of the series but I didn't guess who it was and I enjoyed the chase.

I mainly struggled with Jenna and Dave. They were both so immature the whole time and then it was up to jenna to try and fix things because Daves stubborn. I did however love seeing more of Wolfs daughters. I hope Jenna and Dave can communicate and get over themselves for the next book because I really do love this series.

This is the 13th book in the Detectives Kane and Alton series and is just as good as the first.
A beautiful one woman goes missing in the sky resort above Black Rock Falls and with the weather closing in everyone there is trapped with a murderer. When the second person goes missing Jenna and Dave have their work cut out solving the case.
A cracking read that will keep you reading late into the night.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book! Having read all of the books in this series, I think the author is going from strength to strength.

Kane and Alton are called to a murder at a ski resort. Next thing they know, they are trapped at said ski resort - and the body count just keeps on mounting! This feels a bit Agatha Christie-esque and it really works. By a process of elimination, good team work and dogged determination, they slowly work out who the murderer is. However, their relationship, which has always had a solid friendship base, is hit with some blows. Can they overcome the obstacles in their way?

5 stars from me, for this one.

Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture.

Another hair-raising mystery with Sheriff Jenna Alton and Deputy David Kane. What could be more intriguing than a crime book convention for authors and readers? How about a crime convention that includes a murder, but not a “who-dun-it” competition murder? Jenna and David are called to the scene of a missing person at the resort. When they find the woman, she is trapped beneath the ice in the lake. A single pearl earring is found near her, but she wasn’t wearing earrings. Is this a sign from the killer? As their friend, medical examiner Shane Wolfe, arrives he aides them in the investigation knowing that a crime with so many possible suspects will strain the capability of Jenna’s small department. They also know they are dealing with a twisted killer, one who is able to hide in plain sight. When another murder occurs, how many people will die before they are able to stop the killer? A fascinating murder mystery, the place, the event and the killer. I received an advance review copy at no cost and without obligation for an honest review. (by paytonpuppy)
