A wonderful locked room style mystery. A crime writers convention at the ski lodge and a huge snowstorm make things difficult for Kane and Alton.  They are stranded at the lodge with a murderer and an abundance of possible suspects.  Can they keep the guests from panicking and find the killer before anyone else dies?

I am back in Black Rock Falls for the thirteenth book in the Detective Kane and Alton series and another fantastic five star read. Set in a ski resort in the mountains we have a writers convention and a very devious killer. As the body count begins to rise and a hotel full of suspects it is upto Kane and Alton to apprehend this novel killer. I had no idea who the killer was until the big reveal and I was shocked.
This is another MUST READ from this author and the series is one of all time favourites. Fallen Angel book 13 is just as gripping, heart pounding and thrilling as the first book. I have been with this duo since the beginning and can't the next in this gripping and very addictive series. This author always has the best serial killers. Loved it!!!!!
Many thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC in return for giving an honest review.

Fallen Angel by D.K. Hood is another exciting read for me in the Detectives Kane and Alton series. Once again Black Rock Falls is the scene of a psychopath on a murder spree. This time the local ski resort, Glacier Heights is where the murders occur. Glacier Heights is playing host to a two-week long crime book convention. A series of blizzards block everyone in at the ski resort. I really like author D.K. Hood's writing style. I enjoyed following along with the team's investigation of the murders. I was surprised at Medical Examiner Shame Wolfe's daughter Julie's "too stupid to live" scenes though. The best parts of this story are the birth of the twins and the ending.

Book 13... For some this number makes them want to spend the whole day in bed, locked up. For others this means a brand new story by this amazingly good author.

I think this has become one of my favourite police teams. I have a bit of a soft spot for Dave… and for Shane… and for Zac… and for Jake… 😊 and I would not mind having Jenna, Julie and Emily as BFF’s.

Let’s see what’s so great about this book:

A deranged killer: check
A basket full of suspects: check
A thrilling story: check
A chilling plot: check
A bit of romance: check

Jenna and her team not only had to battle against a very cold killer, but the weather was not on their side either. Sometimes the atmosphere was not only ice cold outside, but freezing inside as well.

It was another nail biting book where I disliked one of the suspect straight from the start. Was that person indeed the killer or were my feelings way of the radar as usual…

I felt the cold seep out of the book, but the suspense kept me nice and warm. 5 stars

Thank you

Fallen Angel is Book 13 in the Sheriff Jenna Alton and Deputy Dave Kane series and our beloved Black Rock Falls….. Jenna & Dave are called up the mountains to a hotel holding a crime writer’s week long convention, a body was under the ice outside one of the cabins… as a blizzard cuts off the roads to the hotel….everyone is a suspect, the attendants at the conference believe the hotel have arranged for a murder mystery given the genre of the week! Surely with the killer amongst them, it should make it easier….

Obviously not the case especially when a second person is murdered… Its all hands on deck, with a lot of people to interview, a lot of guests to try keep safe and not to mention their own team. We also see professional and personal torment between Dave & Jenna, can they work it out and push it to one side at least until the case is solved?

Another fantastic gripping claustrophobic read, not sure I’d like to be snowed in with a serial killer on the loose!!! Outstanding!

Wow! Number 13 and going stronger each novel. The team is after a violent killer at a snowed in location without a clue as to who. Emily has to get licensed soon! Alton's progression in leaving past trauma behind may be in baby steps but she's doing it!
Thank you netgalley and the publisher for this arc

A Mystery Author Convention at the Ski Lodge and before heading into work Jenna and Dave head over to get some of Jenna’s books signed, but they never make it back down the mountain as a report of a missing person turns out to be murder, and then blizzards hit. With limited team access and bodies are starting to pile up the race is on stopping the killer. And to make things difficult the attendees think it is a mystery game ….
Another great instalment in the Kane and Alton series – looking forward to next one.

Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for an early read of this great book!

Definitely enjoyed this one!!! Talk about a creepy situation to be in knowing the murder is someone in the hotel! Ah and finally the relationship between Jenna and Dave hits off. About time haha. I did honestly think the killer this time was a female. Love this series!

Thirteen books in and the author still keeps the mystery fresh. This time around the crew is trapped in a resort where someone is a killer. The deaths are jaw dropping. The cast of characters are interesting and keep you guessing. Dave and Jenna for the first time are facing their professional and personal relationships intertwined. It's a fast paced read that doesn't let up. I read it in one sitting. I'm excited for the next one.

The perfect setting and atmosphere for this time of year, especially here in Charleston WV, because when I was reading this , it was raining , and cold , temperature was in the 50's. So of course I'm going to have my favorite drink, and read one of my favorite series all the while I'm under a nice soft and warm blanket. And the entire time i can re vist my favorite town and characters Kane &Alton, ok so out of the 2 even though their both favorites , my all time favorite is Kane, am I sorry about that nope. What can I say i just love him. As for the story itself wow , the setup and the way the story made me feel, even now just thinking about , still gives me shivers down my spine, plus I loved how the author ties in the book theme with the story. Yes I know others have doen the same but she brought it to a hole new level. Plus with the touch. Of the snow blizzard and the location of the Hotel it give me the feels of set up that would be perfect for an Agatha Christie story.

Number 13 in the Kane and Alton series but nothing unlucky about this, it is still as brilliant a read as all the others in the series.
I love the setting, so clever! A book about yet more murders in Black Rock Falls set at a book convention in Black Rock Falls which includes a signing of books about the previous serial murders in Black Rock Falls!
Intriguing to get a glimpse of the publishing industry and such an original idea to base the murders in this world. All the action is set in the ski resort where the book convention is taking place and everyone is virtually trapped there because of the weather, so that adds great claustrophobia and tension.
We get close to the villain from the start as he stalks not just his victims but one of the teams family as well. But who is he or she and who will be next?
In addition to this exciting main plot the subplots are again developed beautifully with some domestic concerns threatening everything that we’ve come to love.

I've read two other books in this series - this is the 13th - and enjoyed them. The main characters, Sheriff Jenna Alton and her professional and personal partner, David Kane, are likable, skilled people with intriguing, secretive backgrounds who are, well, fun to read about. So naturally, I was looking forward to diving into this one. But for several reasons, this one doesn't quite measure up.

On the plus side, the story itself held my interest from beginning to end. The setting is an expansive mountaintop resort in the middle of winter, at which a convention of current and would-be writers, agents and publishers is happening. Alton and Kane are here to follow up on a gone-missing report of one of the most successful agents; they hang around after her dead, frozen body is found in a pond near her chalet. Also onsite is another familiar character, Medical Examiner Shane Wolfe, who is accompanied by his two grown daughters Emily and Julie - both of whom play major roles this time out.

As they and other members of their team work toward narrowing down suspects - not an easy task given the well-known nastiness of the dead woman - another victim turns up in an under-construction chalet, together with a clue that ties the two murders together. Given that blizzard conditions prevent all but emergency comings and goings, it becomes clear that the murderer is in their midst; and when yet another body gets zapped, they realize they're dealing with a serial killer.

Everyone, including Wolfe's daughters, get their heads together to speculate on the killer's motive in hopes of preventing yet another ugly incident. As a team, they all work well together - even honoring professional responsibilities during a spat between two lovers that would make a junior high student cringe - but the killer's identity remains elusive. As an aside, though, I had to wonder why on earth Kane is sometimes called "Uncle Dave" and other times "Uncle Kane" by the girls - like, who calls an uncle by his last name)? But hey, maybe that was explained in a previous book.

In between "regular" chapters, readers get the musings from the clearly deranged killer himself (or herself - the investigative team realizes that the methods of death could be accomplished by either sex). It is here, too, that readers learn the killer has set sights not only on a select list of victims, but on a team member as well. Can the good guys and gals figure out who the culprit is before the unthinkable happens and one of their own goes down for the count?

As this exciting race to the finish plays out, it's clear that pains are being taken to keep readers guessing whether the killer is male or female. That process, sorry to say, triggered one of my grammar hot buttons: Pairing a plural pronoun with a singular antecedent. An example (my words): "I saw someone get off the elevator, but I didn't recognize 'them'." No, no, a thousand times NO (which has to be close to the number of times it happens in the book, which is why I'm compelled to mention it; once or twice I could overlook). That took a big bite out of my enjoyment of this book, although I still recommend it to others because it's a well-thought-out, interesting story. Thanks to the publisher, via NetGalley, for allowing me to read and review a pre-release copy.

I love this series and it just keeps getting stronger.
Again there is a serial killer, at the snow resort where a crime book festival is being held. I felt the author was drifting into real life and challenging the difficulties of being a published author! I enjoyed the insights into the publishing industry, while the weather was cold and icy. There were Agatha Christie undertones. Being trapped in a ski resort with the killer. But I was happy Jenna and Dave were there too.
A ripping read and as usual I look forward to the next book!

Another brilliant Kane & Alton instalment. This is book 13 but this series is just fab with every book being just as good as the last. It reminded me of a bit like Cluedo. Plenty of fast paced action that kept me guessing on the edge of my seat. I love the way all the characters are with each other like one big happy family. I wish this author could write quicker as I can’t wait for the next instalment. I 1000% recommend this book, series and author.

Well this was a wonderful locked room mystery that kept me reading all afternoon. Book 13 with these characters and I always feel at home with them. Once again it is a team effort to solve this case, with one member getting closer than they would like.

I loved the setting for Fallen Angel, a ski resort just outside town. Jenna and Dave are called to the hotel when a guest goes missing but it turns into a whole lot more that a missing woman. The resort is hosting a week long crime book festival with authors, agents, publishers and readers. And of course it is winter and they are snowed in by the blizzard conditions, making it hard to get in or out. There is a killer amongst them and the guests believe they are part of a game.. but it is a deadly game.

Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for my advanced copy of this book to read. Bring on book 14

In Fallen Angel, D.K. Hood locks her dynamic duo of Alton and Kane at a ski resort -- in the middle of a murder mystery conference -- to solve their most baffling case yet. They investigate a woman trapped under a frozen pond during the middle of the blizzard -- and both the bodies and the snow keep piling up. With a supporting cast of Wolfe (remotely), his daughters Emily and Julie, and relative newcomer, Rio, Alton and Kane are desperately searching for their murderer before he/she can strike close to home. I absolutely love this series, and cannot wait to find out where the author takes Kane and Alton next... and the ending, WOWZA! You cannot help become a big fan of this series with the depth of character, writing, and adventure!

Living in a town known as murder central it is hardly surprising that a successful series of mysteries has been set in its now infamous location. Subsequently the crime writers convention circuit has arrived at the local ski resort, making Black Rock Falls the place to be, whether you are a struggling novelist, a regular topper of the best seller lists, or an agent looking for the next big name. Unfortunately, this new but hugely popular event has coincided with blizzard conditions which threaten to shut everything down.

When one of the guests is found murdered, Sheriff Jenna Alton and her First Deputy, Dave Kane, find they are surrounded by those who consider themselves at least as expert as local law enforcement. Conditions worsen placing everyone in increased danger while Jenna's team, separated by circumstance and freezing weather, are soon working under ever increasing pressure to find those responsible as quickly as possible.  After their next victim is discovered the killer sets their sights on someone with nothing whatsoever do with the writing community but everything to do with Black Rock Falls itself.

This is the thirteenth book in the Detectives Kane and Alton series and, unfortunately, the first I've had a problem with. The storyline and writing is still first class but somehow it didn't tick every box in the way this author's work usually does. There were some brilliant parts, including the convention attendees reaction to the first murder and the inclusion of some of the lesser used characters in main roles for a change.

However the identification and apprehension process didn't have the usual jeopardy for me with the interview and confession seeming contrived and far too convenient. Unfortunately I  also really disliked the final scene which seemed very out of character if not insulting to and by all involved. Over a series of thirteen novels not every one can hit the expected heady heights and this one blip will in no way prevent me from being right there ready to enjoy the next installment.

I was able to read an advanced copy of this thanks to NetGalley and the publishers but the opinions expressed are my own. Not for me this time but roll on book fourteen.

Thanks to Netgalley, Bookouture and D.K. Hood for allowing me to read this Arc.
D.K. Hood is one of my top three favourite authors. Her books always guarantee a delicious, spine thrilling read.
Fallen Angel is equally as brilliant as all the other books in the series. Stuck in a ski resort during a snow storm and ironically a writers convention Jenna, Dave and the team are caught up in a spate of murders! Author agents are being brutally murdered! But joining Jenna's team are Wolfes (the medical examiner's) two daughters. One of them is in serious danger! Also there's something wrong between Jenna and Kane. What is going on??

This was like a delicious little game of clue. Jenna, Dave and team are trapped during a blizzard at the Ski resort hotel. The murders occur during a Crime mystery book event which includes authors, agents, publishers and readers alike. The event participants view the murders as just part of the conference.
The team has to figure out who is murdering the participants while protecting one of their own, who the murderer seems to have taken a liking too!
This is book 13 in the Kane and Alton series and they just keep getting better.
Thrilled to see the relationship progress between Jenna and Dave, even though it’s a police procedural I always enjoy a bit of romance thrown in! Hopefully more progress in the next book!
Thanks netgalley and publisher for the advanced read.

I really enjoy this series and this book was exceptionally fun. The mystery setup in the ski lodge was a departure and it was fun to see all the characters interact in this setting. It was also incredibly nice to see the two lead characters finally enjoying each other's company as 'more than friends'. I don't want to spoil the book but I assume anyone reading this review has at least read other books in the series so you know that Jenna and Dave getting together has been a long time coming. It's really nice to see the relationship growing slowly and I appreciate how thoughtful the author is with them. It all makes sense for these two characters to be moving carefully in this relationship. Even the fight they have makes sense.

A few things I noticed that were strange was Shane's girls calling Dave 'Uncle Kane' instead of Uncle Dave and it made me pause. Also, Julie being targeted again felt a bit off, especially as she ended up spending more time with Rio when apparently, Emily is interested in Rio? Having Emily be targeted might have been a neat way into this pairing. But overall I think it was an excellent addition to the series and I really enjoyed this book. Can't wait for more adventures!
