This one took me by surprise. I read My Cone and Only by this author and wasn't crazy about it, but this one sounded awesome.

I didn't realize that this is Josh and Mia (from My Cone and Only)'s story. But this was a really sweet opposites attract. I loved their natural chemistry and how simple and easy their relationship was. Even when there were complications about where Mia would be and what exactly the relationship was, they were so into each other.

I also love the representation of women in STEM. If you liked The Love Hypothesis you will like this and probably the rest of this series.

I also love a story where they normalize mental health and therapy. Josh had a bad experience and Mia helps him realize maybe it is time to talk about the trauma.

Overall, I give this 5 stars! Again it really took me by surprise.

I readMy Cone and Only first so getting the background on Mia and Josh was amazing! Elementary Romantic Calculus was so sweet, and I love that it included some empowerment too! I am going to read the rest of the books in this series as soon as possible!
Thank you to Netgalley and Hager Street Press for this arc ebook in exchange for an honest review.

Mathematics has been Mia's entire life for as long as she can remember. She's had every part of her 20-year life planned nailed down since she was eighteen. But her plans get derailed when the only job she lands is a temporary teaching gig at a college in rural Texas. Being a life-long city girl, Mia is like a fish out of water and is counting down the days until she can get back to civilization. That is until she meets Josh, the handsome goat farmer/nephew of her eccentric landlady. Josh is so unlike anyone Mia's ever dated, but she can't resist his southern charm. The more time they spend together, the more Mia starts to feel more at home than ever before. Life with Josh in Crowder may not have been in Mia's plans, but she can't imagine a future without him, so Mia will have to decide to pursue her dreams or follow her heart.

I've only read one other book by Nix and I was instantly swept away with it, so I had high hopes this one would be the same. While it was chock full of banter and swoon-worthy moments, I didn't love it as much as I was expecting. I think it mostly had to do with the fact that my brain isn't wired for math, so most of the jargon Mia used went way over my head. I couldn't grasp the concepts she was talking about regarding her research, and because I couldn't fully understand it, I kept getting taken out of the story. However, the moments that weren't about math, I found highly enjoyable. I thought Mia and Josh were such a good fit, despite being so different from one another. They were so supportive and truly brought out the best in one another. I also love Crowder and the small-town vibe of everyone being in each other's business. Nix has such a way of crafting characters that are so winsome and endearing that you just can't help but root for them. Even though there were parts I didn't fully click with, I'll still pick up whatever she puts out.

Elementary Romantic Calculus by Susannah Nix is the sixth book in her Chemistry Lessons series, but can easily be read as a stand-alone. I’ve read the first three books in the series but missed a couple before this one came out that I will have to go back and read soon.

Mia has known what she wants in life since she was a young girl, and she has a plan to get there. However, when her plans change and she’s forced to take a college teaching job in Crowder, Texas, this city girl decides it is just a small detour and she’ll be back in the city and back on her plan in no time.

But, she doesn’t expect to enjoy the town, her job, and her landlady’s goat farming nephew as much as she does. Teaching math classes in a small university is much more rewarding than she expected. Plus she’s getting too involved with the goat farmer and his aunt and sister. But, she only has a year in this Texas town, and then she’s off to bigger things.

I enjoyed this latest installment in Susannah Nix’s Chemistry Series featuring STEM heroines. I enjoy a smart, intelligent heroine in my stories, and this series is a good one. In this book, Mia is a mathematician and she is pretty intelligent but lacks some social cues. I was drawn into this book immediately as the action started right at the beginning of the story. The pacing throughout the book is very good.

This is a perfect small-town romance with a broody goat farmer and cute goats too! Josh, the goat farmer, is a well-drawn character and has good reason for his moodiness and seclusion. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a small-town romance with an intelligent heroine. I received a complimentary copy of this book. The opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
