I cried like a baby while reading this. I hate racism and obvs all the maltreats that I get in my country is not as bad as what the other people get in the other country. It hurts me to read such story. The art are soooo gorgeous and tbh it's the best graphic novel I've ever read. I enjoy it!
Thank you so much Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC

This is a fiercely sweet book about a little girl and her Abuelita and how they face some racism when they are out on the town. A good look at how some cultures are treated differently. The little girl and her Abuelita are both brave as they face the day.

Thanks NetGalley for this ARC!

A great book about family and special time together but laced with small moments of racism and micro aggressions through the eyes of a child. “Don’t they know Abuelita is the best abuelita!.”

CW: racism and microaggressive behavior towards latine people.

YALL I AM CRYING THIS BOOK WAS SO PRECIOUS 🥺

"Cariño, we didn't do anything wrong.
She holds my face in her hands and kisses me.
"What happened is not our fault.
We are not the ones that need to hide.”

bro that broke me.

I loved how the author was able to capture the reality of being a minority in this country. And how to children don't fully understand racism and microaggressions. This reminds me of when I would catch people look at me and my family sideways when we would talk Spanish in public and not fully understanding why. Heck I still see it to this day and wonder why lol.

But, this will definitely be a picture book I will read to my class soon.

Sensitive story about a young girl trying to understand why her beloved grandmother is not appreciated by racist and xenophobic community members. When a day's outing is spoiled by a grocer who won't take the time to listen carefully and a bus driver who racially profiles, the young girl becomes trapped in her anger and wary of leaving the safety of her home. The incidents are sadly all to likely, as is the non response of bystanders. The grandmother tries to teach her granddaughter that it is the hate-filled racists who have a problem, not those who fall outside of the racial and linguistic majority.

Days inside with abuelita are the best and filled with fun, love, and laughter. Venturing into the world outside is a different story for the young narrator and her grandmother as everyone they encounter is full of racist prejudice.

This book had a lot of potential. The illustrations are absolutely adorable and capture the emotions of abuelita and the little girl so well. It’s also sweet and uplifting to see the strong bond between granddaughter and grandmother. However, perhaps the theme of racism and aggressive behavior is overdone with no positive characters shown aside from the girl and abuelita. With how strong the aggression is, I’m not sure that it would resonate well with children and would possibly only make them scared and conscientious of how other people might view them. While it’s nice that the young narrator determines to stand up for herself and her abuelita and refuses to stay trapped inside her house because of the negativity outside, the book would’ve had a better message if there was also an inclusion of at least one person of different color (i.e. white) interacting with the two main characters in a friendly manner. This would show young readers the importance of accepting and respecting others regardless of their skin color or heritage. I’m a huge advocate for diverse books, so I would definitely recommend this being included in library collections, but I think it could’ve been improved with a few changes.

Thank you for the opportunity to review this book!

A sweet little story with a fierce abuelita and a brave Little girl. This book covers the tough subject of facing racism and bullying, showing how together you can be strong and face these challenges.

Very sad story of a little girl and her grandmother, who are treated poorly when they go out into the world.

Her grandmother wants to make a special soup, but the shopkeeper doesnt' understand what yuca is. And the bus driver accuses them of trying to not pay their fare. It is such a horrible day that the little girl doesn't ever want to go out again.

The rest of the book is about having to overcome the fear of being yelled at again, and how they do it.

Good showing how bullying and prejudice and racism effects people. That others who aren't affected, such as white people, don't know how horrible they are being.

I loved this picture book so much. Abuelita and her granddaughter are in a world of their own when they’re together, but the world outside and around them isn’t always kind. They both find strength in each other to brave the unkindness they are faced with,
