I fell in love with One Night on the Island by Josie Silver. I loved the story of Mack and Cleo, and I even loved the secondary characters on the island. They brought so much life to the book! I'm a sucker for a romance with a happily ever after. Without giving too much away, the ending was slightly disappointing for me. It was happy - don't get me wrong - but definitely not the way that I thought that it would end. A solid 4 stars for me (just because I didn't like the way that the story ended) and I'll continue to read (and enjoy!) Josie Silver's books.

A beautiful, remote island off the coast of Ireland, a complex heroine on a mission to find herself, a gaggle of supportive and quirky friends, and being "stuck" in a cozy cabin on the beach with a gentle and sensitive giant of a man. What more could you want?!

One Night on the Island follows Cleo as she travels to a remove island to marry herself for her 30th birthday. When she gets to Otter Lodge, the place she's staying, she is surprised to find a handsome American named Mack, who insists that it is actually his cottage to stay at. With a storm fast approaching and no place else on the island to stay, Cleo and Mack have to figure out how to cohabitate in this small cottage.

While I loved watching the growth of Cleo and Mack's relationship, my favorite part about this book was watching Cleo's growth. She formed meaningful friendships while on the island, learned to love herself and take risks. If you enjoyed Josie Sliver's One Day in December, you will enjoy this book even more!

I fell in love with Josie Silver from her first book. I was so excited to see she had another one coming out.

I have to admit the book was a little slow and dry to start. But then it hit it's stride and I couldn't put it down.

Her writing made me want to visit the remote Island of Salvation. I wanted to meet the regulars and become a part of their community.

I can't wait for the next book by Josie Silver. She has quickly become one of my favorite and go to authors.

I have read both of this authors books and truly enjoyed One Day in December so I was very excited and grateful to have been granted an advanced copy of this book.

I appreciated the fact that the MC’s love story didn’t follow the classic cookie cutter recipe. It wasn’t sudden, it built up, and it was messy (with one of the main characters being married but separated).

I enjoyed the other aspects included in the book as well, the self-discovery and acceptance and love of oneself, the sense of community displayed on the island, and the big difference between the MC’s lives and stage in life.

Read this if you:
✈️have ever been (or want to go) to Ireland
✈️love taking time to disconnect w/o your phone
✈️love love (I mean who doesn’t)

This is the third book I’ve read by this author and this is quite possibly my favorite.

This book was absolutely beautiful, heart-wrenching & incredible. So much truth in these words, so much self reflection and heeling. This could be a true story. Love isn’t always straightforward. Love can be messy. Love doesn’t care about timing. This story was so raw & real and wow. Already can’t wait to get my hands on a physical copy of this.

I have read and enjoyed both of Josie Silver's previous books, so I was excited when @randomhouse @ballantine granted me early access to her upcoming release ONE NIGHT ON THE ISLAND (Pub Date 2.15.22)

This book takes many of my favorite things and wraps them up lovingly between the covers. It's a cozy, romance-adjacent story set on a small island off the coast of Ireland. A  London girl finds herself double booked in the Salvations only lodge with a wayward bloke from Boston. She's searching for herself. He's in a holding pattern and a crossroads. There is a found-family consisting of eccentric village residents and a knitting group comprised of kindred spirits. 

I appreciated that the love element isn't cut and dry. The bloke from Boston is a married Dad (albeit separated)- it's messy. The London girl is on a writing assignment that concludes when she marries herself- it's complicated.  It's full of self-realization, self-acceptance and learning to love yourself. It has these contemplative elements that are equally deep and charming.

One Night on the Island explores what happens when two strangers, one from London and one from Boston, end on a remote island double booked at the same lodge. They are both there for different reasons: Cleo sent on a quest to “marry” herself before her thirtieth birthday and Mack there to escape his messy marriage and photograph the island his ancestors came from. Of course, nothing turns out as planned…

Josie Silvers writing really took an emotional toll on me in this story. I totally fell in love with Salvation Island and the way the locals welcomed and treated both Cleo and Mack. The character descriptions were vivid and the dialogue and experiences between the two main characters felt so real. It took me a few chapters to really get into this book, but once the story picked up, I didn’t want the it to end.

One thought is that I found the title One Night on the Island a bit misleading. It sells the book short as Cleo and Mack’s relationship is so much more than one night or even one week.

My take: 4.25 out of 5. I was a huge fan of Josie Silvers first book, One Day in December, however I wasn't able to get through her second book. She is back in full force here and i really really enjoyed this book. A wonderful romance and female empowerment book. I loved the concept of commitment ceremony to yourself, how brilliant was that? I also enjoyed the slow burn buildup of the romance. Also totally dig when romance books or movies aren't predictable and this was not and I appreciate it. Its not a fairytale and family, backstories and life exists and things are not linear and it just made it all real. Now I'm thinking do i need to go book myself to an island retreat for my 40th?

A wonderful story of two people finding themselves while forced to share a one room cabin on an island in Ireland. Mack is grieving a lost marriage and losing the closeness of his two young sons. Cleo has lost her sense of self and is seeking the cabin’s solitude for discovering who she really is. Their relationship is rocky at first but becomes one of mutual care.

I absolutely loved One Night on the Island! Cleo, nearly 30, is unhappy with her life in London (though she doesn't quite know it yet). She's challenged (forced) by her boss to take a month away, go to Salvation, Ireland, and marry herself on her 30th birthday. As absurd as it is, Cleo agrees and thankfully comes out all the better for it. I really enjoyed seeing Cleo find herself and her passions in life. The alternative romance was really interesting and a great break from the traditional HEA. Mack is running away from the life he has by pretending to run toward his family's past. He's definitely an interesting character, and I would have loved to know more about him throughout the story. My favorite part above all else was the community of Salvation. They were warm, diverse, and the type of community I would love to belong to. The only thing that didn't quite work for me was the title "One Night" on the island. What "one night" was that supposed to describe?

So in order to celebrate such an important day, Cleo's editor has decided that she should marry herself and share the experience with her readers. Oh, and she should also be prepared to do it on a tiny island off the Irish coast. What starts out as a terrible idea becomes an anticipated experience until her space is invaded by a large, grumpy American named Mack. Mack who swears her cabin was reserved for him and refuses to leave. Without warning, Cleo finds herself with an unwanted roommate and a journey she never expected to take. One that will upend her life and help her to redefine what it truly means to be happy. Another classic story by Josie Silver, One Night on the Island is proof that sometimes love arrives in the most unlikely of places.

I was by looking forward to this new novel by Josie Silver. I have enjoyed her books in the past. This was a Did Not Finish for me. I made it 57% of the way through and stopped. I just didn’t care about either character. The premise is one that requires suspending too much belief. Mack is a separated-but-not-divorced father who comes to the island to take photos and rediscover his family roots. He’s at the cottage with the blessing of his distant cousin, who owns the property. Cleo is a writer and has come to the island (cottage rented by her employer through an agency) to spend the last month of her 30’s before she ‘marries’ herself. The point of view alternates each chapter between the two protagonists. I reached the 57% mark and thought , I just don’t care what happens to these people. I didn’t want to waste any more time on it.

I received a complimentary copy of this book "One Night on the Island" and all opinions expressed are my own. This was a good book. I liked all the characters. It was fun when Cleo and Mack were trying to live in the lodge and get along. Love the chalk line. The scenery was awesome and I felt like I was there on the island. The islanders were warm and you just wanted to be there to enjoy their friendship. Overall I could not wait to read this each day and I enjoyed the story.

Cleo and Mack end up stuck on an island off the coast of Ireland when they accidentally double book the cottage, each looking for some solitude. Cleo is looking to find herself and Mack is looking to process his recent martial troubles. They start as enemies fighting over the same space and end up developing a friendship that they both desperately need at that point in their life.

Josie Silver knocked it out of the park with this one. Cleo and Mack are two of my favorite fictional characters. Cleo's storyline of finding herself and discovering happiness gave me so much hope. I found myself wanting the best for all of the characters and still not knowing what that would be, much like Cleo and Mack. I am not someone who cries often while reading books, but this book had me laughing, crying, smiling, repeat. I could have finished this book in a day and instead decided to savor it over a few days because I didn't want it to end.

This was such a delight to read. Cleo had me giggling from page 1 when she mentioned that flamingos mate for life. The romance trope of being shacked together is one of my favorites so I was beyond delighted once Mack showed up. A favorite read of the year. Couldn't put it down.

Writing a dating column, looking for her flamingo on an online magazine, Cleo is given an assignment to travel to an isolated island called Salvation. Once there, she is to make a statement that being single is okay and she is enough by marrying herself. The more Cleo thinks about it, the more she warms to the idea that she needs some time to figure out her love life and her career.

However, Cleo discovers that she is not alone at the one room cottage she has rented. The owner’s cousin, Mack, has also arrived, expecting to stay while he is coping with his own personal life and relationship struggles. With the return boat a week away, they decide to coexist, albeit with a line drawn done the middle of the cottage, and soon find that they are the talk of the small village. While trying to find her peace, Cleo is finding where she really belongs.

Sometimes predictable, but other times surprising me, I found this story very engaging as the characters evolved. They are broken but not so much that they can’t find themselves strong when they need to be and live the moment. I also liked that the author veered away from stereotypes of the women in the town which made them very endearing. What made them so special was how they all cared for each other. This is a story of thinking you want one thing but then realize what you need is really not what you expected. It is a story of love, of finding your home, of being happy with who you are and celebrating that joy. One Night on the Island will make you laugh and cry, and warm your heart. Put this on your TBR list for sure.

The island of Salvation is as remote as one can get: a small town surrounded by sea, barely a smattering of inhabitants, and minimal cell service - a perfect place to reset, which is exactly what Cleo has planned. A columnist from London, she’s set on writing her next story about self-coupling after many failed attempts to find love. She seeks solitude on Salvation as she rings in 30, but it seems the island has different plans for her when Mack walks into her cabin. A Boston father of two, Mack is on Salvation to escape his reality back home and connect to his familial roots on the island, but fate has the two as accidental roommates.

Josie Silver’s books are always like a warm hug: you just want to read them snuggled up all comfy cozy, wearing your heart on your sleeve. Her characters are so tender and compelling and she gives them the perfect amount of depth and backstory. You know them, you love them, you adore them, and the cast of this book was no exception.

The description made this sound like a fun, light romance, but this book had a bit more meat than I was expecting. Both characters are dealing with some difficult personal issues (Mack especially). My heart hurt for Mack and Cleo at times. The setting of this book sounds wonderful - not sure whether or not Salvation Island is a really place, but if it is, I want to go!
