I LOVED this book!! What I loved most was how although Peter’s sexual identity was discussed, there was no further explanation. He is just who he is, which is how it should always be. Cannot wait for the retelling of The Little Mermaid!!!

A Land of Never After was a short but engaging read. It is not a traditional retelling, and only select characters from the Neverland we know (along with new ones) appear. As I got to understand the story and meet these characters, I began to feel that I may have been able to appreciate them more in a world of their own.

There is a Hook-inspired character who I especially grew to love.

Davennor's writing is good, however it did take me time to become invested. I think it was due to having to familiarize myself with this new Neverland. It picked up for me in the second half.

If you enjoy fantasy books and fairytales, I vote to give this one a chance!

Re-telling of Peter Pan? I was thrilled! God, I thought that it will be a perfect, maybe some adults-only, version of the popular story. But it was so twisted, complicated, and boring at the same time, that I'm out.

I understand that re-telling is the author's vision but this one was something that I would never think of. Curses, legends, lost love - there were too many elements in such a short story.

Unfortunately, not something I would recommend.

"A woman can do anything a man can."

This is a dark retelling of Peter Pan and I loved the creepy twists! I have been enjoying retellings lately, and this one was no exception. Neverland was a dark place full of monsters and secrets... definitely not the Neverland you knew as a child. This Wendy was strong and capable, much more so than the original. I loved the song suggestions at the beginning of each chapter - a fun and interactive addition to the story! Packed full of action, curses and secrets, fans of Peter Pan and Hook will surely enjoy this one.

My only complaint was because it was so short, there wasn't as much character development and backstory as I'd like.

Thank you to the publisher and @netgalley for this e-ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I was very excited when I saw this book. I love the original Peter Pan, and I also love retellings because the whole Neverland premise is just so interesting and you can do so much with it. I feel like the book also started out strong, and I was curious where it would go, but then it just didn't really go anywhere interesting. We meet Wendy, an orphan who has just aged out of the orphanage. Then we meet Peter, a random boy who shows up to help Wendy when she's about to get in a fight with a hardened sailor. Peter finds out it's Wendy's birthday, and wants to celebrate, so he runs off to get something. Wendy falls asleep and wakes up to find her precious music box missing. Assuming Peter stole it she runs off in search of him, encounters some thugs, and runs into the forest. The forest is this completely dark place full of monsters that are rotting and wants to kill you.... Peter shows up to save Wendy... turns out he is a "creature of the forest" himself... there's a curse which requires the inhabitants of the forest to kill in order to not rot away and it's all very complicated. But fret not, a few days later the "evil?" captain Hook will explain absolutely everything to Wendy, whom he just met (and captured), because they're actually related? And Wendy needs to help Hook break the curse by having Peter murdered (but not against his will) and there's an amulet and a long family history and murderous siblings and a missing mother and it's all just.... so hard to understand. Or care about.
All this to say the plot is too complicated. There are too many plot holes. There is no character development at all. We have no time to get to know Peter to actually care about him either. The whole "trans" thing seems to be thrown in as a character trait or something, instead of just letting us get to know the character? Wendy is annoying, but not because she is aggressive, it's because that is ALL she is. In the end everything is solved super easily with no consequences for ANYONE, and it all just seems a bit too convenient.
All in all it was pretty disappointing, although the story had some interesting elements, and it could've been good. It just needs more time, more editing, more everything.

A Land Of Never After is definitely a retelling aimed at adults as opposed to the traditional YA market, particularly if the opening list of trigger warnings is anything to go by, so as you can imagine I was desperate to get stuck into this book.
(Side note: more books should open with their trigger warnings - this was very refreshing)

Wendy has always been drawn to the sea and, since aging out of the orphanage, her aim is to gain employment on a ship. However, bad luck, an encounter with a boy in green and her quick temper thrusts Wendy into the forest that borders her town, a forest full of monsters, the Forest of Never.

Hook, Tink, Peter and Wendy are all along for the ride in this swashbuckling, quick read, along with the new and amazing Elvira.
The diverse changes to the characters were really clever and put a whole new spin on Peter's reluctance to grow up from the original fairytale. I also loved Hook's anguished past but I feel that both Hook and Peter's struggles could have been developed a little more. This is possibly a sacrifice of a short book but, particularly with Peter, I wanted to feel more emotion than I did.

With pirates, curses and some pretty epic battles, I was getting all the Pirates of Caribbean vibes from this story and I loved it.
Despite being a quick read, Davennor's Neverland is full of action and intrigue. Yes, I did miss some character development but the epilogue was so well written that I may just get this in the next installment.

A Peter Pan retelling with a definite adult themed atmosphere about it. It was very dark and although the character names were the same as the original the characters themselves were all very told in a very different way and it was one I actually really enjoyed.
The writing was well done and easy to read and I became invested in Wendy's story and journey from the beginning, my only issue was that because it is quite short at times it felt rushed as we jumped from one section/storyline to another. I would love to see the world and characters fleshed out a little more maybe this will happen in the continuation of the series. I would love to read more .
Thank you to Netgalley and Night Muse Press for the advance copy.

A dark and spooky story based on Peter Pan and the stories of Neverland, mixed with pirates and zombie like Nightwalkers, makes this a nice spooky October read! I enjoyed reading it, biggest flaw is that it is really short! I would have loved more depth and details about this version of Neverland. Tink was my favourite character, I loved that she had a bigger role in this story than in other retellings!

A very quick and entertaining read; except for the names it's not tied to Peter Pan at all. I wish the author spent a little more time building things up (the world of Neverland, Wendy, the mythology around it all) but since there is a sequel maybe that will be explored more then and this is more a pilot episode. I do look forward to the next installment .

An interesting and dark take on Peter Pan. I enjoyed the twists and turns in the plot and the characters. All the favorites are there with a few new ones added in the mix. I'm looking forward to reading the next adventure!

* spoiler alert ** Book content warning
Graphic depictions of violence and death, disturbing imagery, language, brief mention of gender dysphoria, a scene involving suicide.

I fell in love with Cedric and Elvira, I can't wait to see where their stories go.

It took me a while to get into this book, it didn't grab me which I was a little disappointed with as I was so looking forward to reading it.
I feel it could have done with a few 100 pages more, the whole book felt a little crammed, trying to rush to fit all the information in.

If I hadn't read the content warning at the start, the few gender dysphoria hints throughout the book would have had me more confused, (please note I'm all for inclusion and nothing against transgender people, sorry if my terminology is wrong) at this stage in the book I'm not really sure why it's there, I'm hoping book 2 elaborates more on it or with a few 100 more pages in this book Peter could have had more of a back story.
I would have also liked to learn more of Never land and it's curse/creatures.

In saying all this I am looking forward to book 2, the epilogue has drawn me in, I can't wait to see what is next.

Special thanks to NetGalley, the publisher and the author for a free, electronic ARC of this novel received in exchange for an honest review

This is like the adult version of Peter Pan, it gives me very Alice in Wonderland vibes, but similar to A.G. Howard's version. This is definitely a great retelling that I will be rereading in the future whenever I need Peter Pan vibes in my life.

An intruiging gritty look at Peter Pan that I think ultimately missed the mark.

So: Wendy turns 16 and gets kicked out of the orphanage she's lived in her whole life. She's looking for info about her mom and ends up meeting Peter Pan and being chased into the Never Forest where things are creepy and not the Neverland from the Disney movie. There's a curse, there's pirates, there's Tink, and there's the mystery about her parents to be unravelled.

I liked the way Peter was portrayed, I thought his motivation was good, I loved Tink, the twist in the middle was well done, and I liked how the epilogue set up the sequel that made sense.

There's a wild exposition dump in the middle of the novel- I think this would have benefitted from being twice as long so that all the plot threads could get teased out into full, coherent subplots.

Overall it wasn't a bad book, but I think I wouldn't pick up the next one and would probably recommend other Peter Pan retellings over this one.

I was very excited to receive this book from the publishers and netgalley in exchange for my honest review.

This book is a dark retelling of Peter Pan, I am a big fan of retellings, so I couldn’t wait to dive into this one. This is the first book in a series and follows Wendy Maynard an orphan who sets out on a journey looking for a ship who will take a girl, but instead meets Peter Pan and gets trapped in Neverland. Neverland is a dark twisted place that cursed and filled with monsters. Will she survive and escape?

This book was very fast paced, action packed and a very quick read. It was entertaining for sure and I’m a sucker for retellings (as mentioned before). I do wish however that the characters were a little more fleshed out, which is hard to do when the book is so short. It was definitely entertaining and I recommend it to anyone who’s a fan of Peter Pan and Hook.

*Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for providing me with an early copy of this book for review, all opinions are my own*

2.5 stars

This book took a lot longer than I thought it would take to read.
Reading is fluid and the writing is not difficult, but for some reason, the story didn't catch me.
I think this book does have a vibe to be read now in October, it's pretty heavy and has a pretty scary vibe.
I really liked the book as a retelling, I think the author did a great job bringing the Neverland story to life with her own macabre twists.
I didn't love the story but it's not a bad book, there's a cool hook (haha) for the second book but I don't know if I'm interested enough in these characters and their stories to continue!

This book contained so many cool concepts/ideas/plotlines - none of which felt fleshed-out in the slightest. If the book were twice its length, it might’ve done the ideas some justice, but unfortunately everything felt so, so rushed in a way that wasn’t flattering to the tale.

Be warned, this is a dark retelling of Peter Pan. The release is actually perfectly timed to coincide with Halloween.
In this retelling Neverland has fallen under a curse and Wendy is an orphan. It’s her 16th Birthday when she ages out of the orphanage and makes her way into town where she meets Peter Pan in a chance encounter. Circumstances lead to her getting stuck in Neverland and from there it’s a journey of growth & learning combined with a race to break the curse.

Firstly, things I liked about this book:
The song link at the start of the chapters. This was brilliant and really helped set the mood. Also I didn’t have to go searching through Spotify for titles from a playlist.
I also like the diversity of the characters, like Tink being a sassy POC.
The most surprising thing was that Hook ended up being my favourite character! He plays a prominent part in the latter half of the book and I was left wanting more (especially after that ending from his POV). I hope he gets his own book next.

Now to things I though could have been done better:
On the topic of diversity, (without giving anything away) while I like the inclusion of LGBTQI topics I feel that it could have been done better. The gender questions of one of the characters (not giving away who) felt a bit forced and like it was just placed there for the sake of it. It also felt more like an after though. I would have like for it to feel more natural and to have been explored a bit better to give the topic as well as the character more depth. I know the author will most likely delve deeper into the topic in the next book, it just could have been clearer and was a missed teaching opportunity.
There were also parts of the book where the story line jumped without enough of a segue. One bit in particular, one chapter ends with Wendy falling asleep and then in the next chapter there’s a time jump and Wendy is running for her life through the woods. I don’t mind being thrown in the deep end but a better explanation as to how I got there would have been appreciated.

All in all this was an enjoyable read full of action & adventure with dark twist. A fresh take on a classic with a sprinkling of modern issues thrown in.

I was lucky enough to get an ARC copy of this book through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I love everything Peter Pan. So, naturally, I had to read this one. I love dark retellings, new twists on classic stories and unique adaptations of old tales. This was no exception. The concept was brilliant, but the writing didn’t quite hold up such a powerful plot. There were several twists and turns that sometimes felt a little convoluted with the fast pace and I wished things had slowed down a bit and been fleshed out more. I wanted to like our new Wendy, but I always felt like there was a bit of a connection missing and I longed for more scenes with her and Peter to develop their friendship.

This was a dark, twisted tale of a cursed Neverland and I loved it. There were moments where the prose was so strong and captivating, but also so many others where it was rushed and needed to be drawn out, especially since Wendy had the potential to be such a strong character. I think it was some of the dialogue and character interactions that were the weakest points because some of the descriptive passages were fabulous. Besides Wendy, the characters felt a little flat and never really developed. The book was mostly about her and her father and I wished Peter had been involved more or that the father’s character had been a little deeper, with their relationship really explored more.

When I first read about the LGBTQIA+ plot element, I was thrilled to see some representation for young trans readers, but then nothing happened with it. It felt like it was introduced just to check a box on a list and then ignored for the rest of the book. It could have been a powerful narrative and it was discarded as quickly as it was brought up.

I still enjoyed it and enjoyed the plot. I liked the elements of Blackbeard twisted in. Overall, great concept but lacked good execution. Still worth a read for die hard Pan fans.

I really enjoyed this, I love retellings and dark fantasy. This dark retelling is especially dark and I love it. It is set in a darker version of Neverland which has rotting corpses the walk through the forest because of a curse, basically, the land is dying. This book was very creative, and for a retelling, that's especially impressive. It has intrigue, mystery and magic. We have differences in our beloved characters, I flew through this eagerly.

Wendy was great as the main character. .The poems and songs within the novel were a nice touch. Hook, Tink, and Peter were great secondary characters. I wish it was longer because I felt like I read it so fast in just under 2 hours.

Highly reccomend
