A solid variation on the glut of mythology stories we've been getting for a while. Instead of supposing that the Greek or Roman or whatever pantheon are real, this one takes the approach that Jules Verne was writing about real things. While we still have teens with remarkable abilities this is more about technology than magic. The plot follows a fairly predictable pattern but it was pleasant enough.

This audiobook was received as an ARC from Disney Audiobooks - Disney Hyperion through Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

Rick Riordan does it again in creating a thrill-ride of a lifetime. Reading this book left my mouth wide open, my entire body in shock, and my lungs completely breathless. I admire the self sufficiency and strength Ana expressed throughout the book, having her only family be her brother depriving her of the bonds of family. Now, with the cold war rivalry of Land Institute, for Ana the biggest curse turns into the biggest blessing, friends become family, but most importantly, Ana's discovers her purpose in life and the true amount of strength she has. This is such an exciting, and inspiring story. I can totally see why this was voted the Goodreads Choice Award for best Middle Grade Novel. The voice of Soneela Nankani brought passion, excitement, and a calming nature conveying a thrilling book.

Another Rick Riordan masterpiece that will sweep the young reader nation by storm. This book deserves 5 stars.

My daughter and I are huge fans of the Percy Jackson series, The Heroes of Olympus series and The Trials of Apollo series. I requested this book to get a listen in before sharing it with her. I was not disappointed. The story begins by introducing us to the main character Anna Dukaar. She is now an orphan because her parents tragically died on an ocean expedition. Though she is not without family because she still has her older brother Dev. Anna attends the Hardington Pencroft school and they have a huge rivalry with the Land Institute. Anna has many adventures as she goes to school and battles the Land Institute.

Riordan does what he does best, he gives us well thought out plot and amazing adventures. The only thing that I found slightly lacking was his trademark humor. The book is very enjoyable, but the humor is something that I have always found engaging. The audiobook also incorporated music to the narrative to build suspense. The narrator, Soneela Nankani, did a wonderful job bringing the book to life.

I definitely recommend this book and plan to listen to it again with my daughter in the future. It will definitely be added to our personal Audible library.

I was provided a free copy of this audiobook through NetGalley, for an honest review of the material.

What if Captain Nemo wasn't just an old tale in a storybook but actually a brilliant inventor lightyears ahead of his time?? What would happen if you were thought you were the sole living heir who could command his "lost" submarine, the Nautilus? And what if your school which had been training you in the naval arts was destroyed by the competition? Well, Ana Dakkar is about to find out. Leaving the base for their first training run which turns into a run for their lives as their school, Harding Pencroft Academy, blows up. They must seek out a secret base, and Ana is thrown into a leadership position that she doesn't ask for. Will they find answers and find a way to stop everything that has been put into motion??

Daughter of the Deep is an excellent book -- imaginative and fun with creative nautical twists and turns. I love how the 9th grade class teams up and really comes together to face the problems and deal with the challenges thrown their way. I also love the creativity of the premise and the story is very well-crafted and shaped. I highly recommend it for middle grade readers and anyone who loves a good story!!

Thank you to NetGalley and Disney Hyperion for a copy of this book for review. I received a copy of the audiobook which was excellent. All opinions contained in this review are my own.

I dearly love some underwater exploration! To be wholly honest, I wasn't prepared for the level of absolute tragedy that this book started out with, and it took me a long while to get my feet back under me. That was really rough, and I didn't feel like the book's marketing or up to that point had prepared me for it. But other than that, a solid adventure with some excellent characters.

This is a great one for readers to try if their a little too nervous to tackle Riordan's multibook series. We have a diverse cast of characters interacting with some pretty cool technology. This is going to be a little weird but one of my favorite aspects of this book was the inclusion of Ana's period cramps. Life can be crazy but your body isn't going to pause itself even in the middle of a worldwide crisis. It was a great inclusion and didn't detract from the story at all. I will say it was a little depressing at the beginning with the setup of her parents being gone and then the school goes, I had to pause and come back to it because I wanted a fun book at the time but I was glad I stuck with it because this book is so interesting and fun!

I don't think Rick Riordan could possibly write a book I do not enjoy. He is simply THAT brilliant of a middle grade author. Daughter of the Deep was no exception. If anything, this might make a great introduction to his writing for anyone intimidated by his multi book series as this is (to the best of my knowledge) intended to be a stand alone.

Rick Riordan finally brings us a new novel and its a standalone inspired by 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea? I can get on board with that. I've joked that it doesn't matter what Riordan writes, I'll read it, but it helps that he is consistently writing quality middle grade and YA fiction. Daughter of the Deep is no exception. It is fast paced, adventurous, and features smart (all kinds of smart), kind, lovable characters. I don't feel like I can say. a whole lot about Ana as a main character without heading into some pretty spoilery territory, but what I will say is that she makes an excellent heroine and her relationships with her brother and schoolmates are what made the book for me. If I were to share one concern and it is a small one, it would be to urge caution when considering the audience for this book. I would hesitate to recommend this one to younger readers even up to about 11-12 years old as there is some violence that even I was surprised by throughout the book, but especially the tragedy that sets the stage in the beginning. More mature young readers would likely do just fine with this one. The audio by Soneela Nankani was great, I've been a fan of her narration for several years!
Overall, it was. an interesting detour from our favorite internet Uncle!

Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an ALC in exchange for a fair and honest review.

Ooookay y'all, this one was great. It's vastly different than everything else we've seen from Uncle Rick thus far. Daughter of the Deep is a lot more SF than anything else, with minor steampunk elements, but don't let the steampunk throw you off. The protagonist is not an engineer and her friends in the background are the ones working with the technology.

Ana herself is a languages specialist with an affinity for animals and I *really* enjoyed both aspects of her personality. Also? This book showcases a lot of different types of strengths through the boarding school's house system. Ana is a Dolphin, aka the navigators and diplomats. Her friends are from all of the other houses (Orca - healers, Shark - weapons specialists, & Cephalopod - engineers) and they all get showcased accordingly. It was very refreshing to see a house system that wasn't based in fantasy/magic, that's for sure.

Another aspect of this book that y'all should know about is that there's NO ROMANCE. What a relief. Here are my last two important thoughts about this book: I unexpectedly loved Gemini Twain and his penchant for rubber bullets instead of real ones; and I loved that Uncle Rick didn't hesitate to discuss Ana's debilitating period cramps. It's about time we normalized the human body.

Anyways this book is wild and very fun. Definitely give it a shot.

Ana Dakkar is a freshman at Harding-Pencroft Academy, a school for all things of the sea. Ana's older brother, Dev, is also a student at the school. Due to an accident taking her parent's lives two years ago, Dev is all the family Ana has left. He means everything to her. They are very close.

The pinnacle of Ana's freshman year is a weekend trial at sea; think of it as a very serious field trip. Ana has no idea what lies in store for the weekend. She can only hope that she'll be successful, but all of that goes out the window when the Freshman class witnesses a violent and tragic event. They're lucky to be alive.

They learn a rival school, Land Institute, may be responsible, but why? What could possibly be behind such vicious animosity?

Ana and the rest of her classmates are now on their own. They need to figure this all out and somehow out smart and out last their enemies. Along the way, they learn a lot of school history and Ana learns some quite interesting things about her own heritage as well.

Daughter of the Deep is such an exciting, fast-paced and heart-warming story. I loved the connections to 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, as well as the setting and overall vibe. Riordan grabbed my attention from the very beginning and that never changed. I was completely engrossed in all that was evolving on the page.

I adored this cast of characters, how they grew to rely on one another and really became an excellent example of a found family. You want to be with them; one of the team.

Additionally, although the circumstances for our characters are quite serious, there was a great vein of humor running throughout this story. I found that aspect extremely engaging; it kept me focused.

I'm not sure what the plan is for this. If this will become a new series or not. I certainly hope it will be. I cannot imagine this being the last I read of these characters. They're all so fantastic and there is so much more room for them to grow. I want more!!!

Thank you so much to the publisher, Disney Audio, for providing me with a copy of the audiobook to listen to. The narrator was terrific and I feel like audio is great format to take in this story. Keeping my fingers crossed that this will not be the last we see of Ana and friends!!!

I loved this book. Perfect for fans of Rick Riordan. I love that Riordan showed that mythology isn't all he can do. He did it masterfully.

Another win for Riordan. I can't wait to put this in to the hands of readers and introduce them to the world of Jules Verne.

I wish I loved this as much as I love Percy Jackson and Magnus Chase but I just didn't. As a Jules Verne retelling it is solid and I know that I have students who will enjoy this book but it just wasn't for me.

This was an exciting story of fantastic technology and the mysteries of the deep. It made me want to read Jules Verne 20, 000 Leagues of the Deep and learn more of Verne’s underwater world.

I should preface this review by saying that I am a die hard Rick Riordan fan! When I saw he was publishing the first book in a new series this fall, I was ridiculously excited to get my hands on it. However, I felt a little disappointed by Daughter of the Deep.

There are so many reasons to like like this book! It has a diverse cast of characters with wonderful representation, a strong female lead, a heart-pounding fast-paced adventure, and a unique take on a classic story.. However, I didn't feel the same magic as I have for many of Riordan's previous works. I grew up with Percy Jackson, so it could be my age or the fact that I love magic and mythology while this book is centered more on technology. In the end, there was something that didn't quite click for me as much as I'd hoped.

I would still give this book 3.5 stars and heartily recommend it to middle grade readers who enjoy a good adventure. As for older Rick Riordan fans, I'd advise that this is one they can skip unless they have a strong interest in 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.

Fans of Rick Riordan will not be disappointed to steer away from mythical gods in this fresh look at Jules Verne's 20,000 Leagues and Mysterious Island! Ana Dakkar is thrust into leadership after an attack on her school. She and the other students in the freshman class are away on a field trip and are devastated by the news. Ana's family heritage is a huge surprise, but I won't spoil the story. This book made it on my Christmas gift book recommendation list in our local newspaper, The Hawk Eye. (Burlington IA) I'm not sure when the article comes out.

This book was amazing. I loved the storyline. I loved that the main character was an empowered young woman. I loved the descriptions of animals and tech. I am a little disappointed it is not a series but I do think it is nice for Rick Riordan to have a stand-alone so people can try a book without committing to a series. Great book

This was one of the best audiobooks I've listened to! As a librarian that supports K-12, I read a bit of everything and when a new Rick Riordan was on the horizon, I knew I wanted to be ahead of the curve and be able to booktalk it - the audiobook is always the quickest for me to read on the go, so I flew through this one. Not because I wasn't paying attention but because it was SO GOOD I was using every available moment to 'read' a few pages. The story itself was as awesome as Riordan's tend to be, but I'll be recommending the audiobook tor readers especially for the bonuses like real organ music anytime Ana was playing, and suspenseful cues along with a fantastic narrator. Daughter of the Deep better be a series as I'm thinking there's a lot more to Ana's adventure and newfound leadership, and when they continue, I'll definitely be tuning in via audiobook.

I loved this book! I have never read 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea so I did not know what to expect when I started listening to this book. I had a vague idea of how the book goes, but this story just made it feel alive. Especially when talking about Nautilus. The part of me that wanted to study marine biology or oceanography in my early 20s fell in love with this book from the first chapter with Ana and Dev feeding Socrates. The plot is fantastic and Riordan, of course, knows how to write an excited story. This book is definitely going down as one of my favorite reads this year. The narrator was fantastic! Not to mention the production value of the whole audiobook really provided another level of suspense to the story.

I throughly enjoyed this modern continuation of 20,000 leagues under the sea. Ana Dakkar is a smart teenager who has to make some important choices when she leaves for a freshman trip and her whole world is turned upside down.

I didn't see the plot twist coming.

The only complain I have is that sometimes the music in the background made it difficult to hear the audiobook.
