A detailed, in depth, and thoroughly researched biography of Winston Churchill focusing on his Naval involvement, starting right from the beginning of his career. Largely positive but not uncritical in its assessment of Churchill as a person. As a person from the younger generation, my understanding of WWII is only from a distance. Commemorating remembrance day recently helped me again to appreciate the enormous sacrifices made to defeat powers that were unequivocally evil.
Churchills reputation has taken a battering in recent years, with his statue in Parliament square being graffitied. I'll be interested to see how this book is received in the light of recent revelations/observations about his sometimes racist comments. This book not an attempt to rehabilitate his reputation in that regard, but a focused look at aspects of his career.
This book reveals his intelligence, ambition, foresight and good sense in the practical matters of the Navy, which helped the war be won.
