This one really fell flat for me.

The story itself felt a bit too long - I don't mind a longer picture book when the story feels needed, but this one felt like it dragged in places.

I also didn't love how it was realistic in many ways, but completely fictional in others. This can be hard for kids to process. Fully fictional is fine, fully realistic is fine, or even a mix where it is 90% one over the other, but this one felt more 50/50 and it just felt confusing to my wee one.

Overall, I enjoy the true story behind this, but I didn't like the execution of it in picture book form.

I thought that this was a really lovely book with some gorgeous illustrations.

The book tells the very cute story about a friendship between a hermit crab and a seagull. Herman is a little hermit crab who hides among the rocks to avoid being eaten by larger fishes and birds and the Princess Gull is one who has flown from another island in search of blue water and food.

The story is sweet and it is easy to follow too. I read it with my four year old daughter and she really picked up on the points about their friendship and thoroughly enjoyed the story.

It is 5 stars from me for this one, very highly recommended!

Herman and The Princess Gull tell a beautiful story of hopes, dreams, fears, and friendship.

The unlikely friendship between Herman and Antares displays a guiding example: the possibilities are endless if we help one another. This book warmed my heart, and I cannot wait to share it with my young students. It will be an excellent curriculum lesson in "how we can be a friend."

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this beautiful tale.

Thank you so much to the publisher and the author for this review copy. What a cute and fun read about a resilient crab and a friendly seagull. I especially loved that the details about the various sea life are mostly based on facts. The author spends a lot of time on the ocean and it definitely comes through. The illustrations are a lot of fun and kept the interest of my 4.5 year old.

A sweet story about differences, friendship ans courage. I liked the back info about animals; it makes it easy to expand the learning experience, or just keep it simple for the little ones.

Thank you for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review! This is a really cute book for kids with a great storyline. I really enjoyed the illustrations and the backstory section at the end, which explains more about the animals included in the book. I think it would be a great resource to teach kids more about marine life in a fun way.

Omg!
I absolutely adore this storybook!

What a way of telling this tiny amazing story about how a tiny, flimsy animal can fight it's way out of hiding all alone in its habitat. That's our hermit crab named Herman.

The story is all about courage, about giving friendship a chance and be there for who matters.

The artstyle is basic yet it will catch yoir breath!

Love how cleverly the colours have been utilised for this amazing storybook.

Thank you, author/artist, for the ARC.

This is a cute little story about Herman the crab. He is afraid of doing anything because he doesn't want to get eaten, He gets teased by other crabs for being scared. One day a weak gull lands next to his hole and tells Herman she is a princess named after a constellations and her name is An. He helps feed her and in return when he is in trouble she rescues him. Then she helps him accomplish a dream of touching the sand. In doing this she helps him find a shell that allows him to explore without fear. It is a good lesson on helping others without expectation can be rewarding in making a new friend

This was a sweet story about an injured seagull and a scared hermit crab that become unlikely friends. I loved the illustrations which were cute and expressive. The story itself was sweet and simply told. I also loved the educational information at the end that was included for young readers to learn more about hermit crabs.

While my toddler did enjoy the book because of the imagery and the friendship aspect to the story I have a feeling that this is one he will grow into more as he becomes an older toddler.

I recommend this for children ages 4 and up. Although your younger toddlers (like my two year old) may enjoy it sooner, but know it is one that they will certainly grow into if you get it while they are younger.

Five stars.

This cute book is about the unique friendship between a hermit crab and a seagull. Herman is the crab who hides among the rocks to avoid being eaten by larger fishes and birds. The princess is a seagull who flew from another island in search of blue water and food.
The story is rather sweet, and so are the illustrations. It talks of friendship while also providing useful information about the crab, seagull, and a couple of marine creatures. It’s a cool book for kids who love animals and the sea.
I received an ARC from NetGalley and Compass Rose Press USA and am voluntarily leaving a review.

The story is simple but is heart melting though. The adorable friendship between the two main characters is a huge teaching for everyone (no matter what age you are) to be respectuf and kind hearted, always.
Even if the tale is short, the book has an added value at the bottom: the author included a useful depiction of the sealife represented in the story. It was really interesting to discover more on these animals.

Four stars might be pushing this a bit, but it's a gentle little read, about a crab with big ideas – and a lot of threats left and right, above and beneath – and a gull that claims to be a princess on a mission. Now, gulls eat crabs like Herman here, so I'll leave it to you to see what prevents this one from doing so. The whole book ends up being half a Just So story, with an aspect of nature explained, and half a warming tale with a moral about how kindness breeds kindness. As such it's certainly worth a look.

I received an arc of this title from NetGalley for an honest review. Herman is a crab and must be careful at all times as there are a lot of predators who would love to eat him. Then he meets The Princess Gull and although she could eat Herman, they become friends instead.

I understand it's important to teach kids about the circle of life, but I worry this book would be a little too scary for some kids. Herman is constantly worried about being eaten by other animals in his ecosystem. I did enjoy the friendship that developed between Herman and the gull, and wish the story focused more on that friendship and less on Herman worried about being eaten all the time. I thought the illustrations were gorgeous and did a great showing the story. I also loved how the end included descriptions of the different creatures that were featured throughout the book. Thank you NetGalley for providing a free copy of this book in return for an honest review.

I found this book to be too text-heavy to get through. I started, but could not even finish. Wanted to like it, but it is a pass for me.

I read this picture book with my 3.5-year-old daughter who likes animals. The vivid colours and beautiful illustrations make this an adorable book. I had to however soften the story a bit because sharp seagull beaks and predatory fish hunting for a cute crab would have been too much drama for her. The overall message of the story is nice and we will read this again I'm sure, but maybe this book is better for kids above 5.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Compass Rose Press for an ARC.

Herman is a very sweet crab who dreams of coming out of the shadows and exploring the world around him. Unfortunately, there's the pesky problem of possibly getting eaten. So, he stays hidden. One day he meets Antares, a gull who is hungry and exhausted from a long flight to find a new place for her fellow gulls after they're affected by red tide. Normally a gull would be a predator, but Herman senses she needs help and they become good friends, helping each other achieve their goals.

The art is very detailed and beautiful. Kids will be fascinated by the lively pictures. Unfortunately there is the uncomfortable undercurrent of eating and being eaten that might be a bit upsetting for younger and more sensitive kids. They tend to get very worried about these things, so I might be a little hesitant to try this as a pre-K classroom read. That said, kids who pick it up on their own may really enjoy it, and an adult reading partner can help them talk through any "circle of life" distress.

Many thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review!

This was a cute story that was paced well, had great pictures and the right amount of excitement. I also really enjoyed the backstory section at the end to teach children about sea life.
