The story spans countries and continents, with the complexities of the plot revealed across decades. There are layers and layers of characterization set against the backdrop of WW2 and the problems that followed. All human emotion is laid bare with gritty realism and tear-jerking empathy. The detail is extraordinary with a great sense of place and time. This is a testament to the horrors of war and the small acts of kindness that have far-reaching consequences. A book this good cannot be forgotten and I know one day I will read it again.
