Maybe it is because they look like alien beings from another world, but I have always loved watching marine life like octopuses with their stretchy, squishy bodies; dainty seahorses covered with bony plates; and translucent jellyfish that propel themselves through the water by contracting their umbrella-shaped bells. In National Geographic’s forthcoming book, Octopus, Seahorse, Jellyfish, we get up close and personal with these amazing creatures.

Acclaimed nature photographer David Liittschwager has assembled an enthralling collection of stunning underwater images that are guaranteed to both captivate and educate. He has spent decades mastering the craft of capturing these animals on film in all their ethereal beauty, and in this new volume he showcases 200 of his most revealing photos.

His unforgettable images are paired with essays by bestselling science writers Elizabeth Kolbert, Jennifer Holland, and Olivia Hudson. They provide insights into the biology and cognitive abilities of these mysterious denizens of the deep. Here you will see everything from a vividly patterned wonderpus octopus to the comb jellyfish who looks like it is wired with LED lights. The results are simply mesmerizing.

Imagine standing in an aquarium surrounded by a cloud of beautiful, translucent Moon Jellyfish. They may look like little sea ghosts as they float through the water, but they are most definitely alive, even though they lack brains, bones, or even blood. How can this be? You’ll find out in this immersive book.

Those who have ever seen seahorses in real life know that they are quite tiny. But Liittschwager was able to magnify these incredible creatures five times life size, and the results are simply delightful. We get a glimpse of these super tiny seahorses and their ultra-adorable brood. Plus, Holland explains just what good fathers’ male seahorses are. Find out why they put human dads to shame!

If you love our oceans and all the lifeforms that inhabit them, you will want to pre-order this gorgeous book. Octopus, Seahorse, Jellyfish will provide you with a depth of knowledge you will be hard pressed to get anywhere else. But it is Liittschwager’s breathtaking photography that steals the show here. You will want to take your time perusing each page so you can marvel at the delicate, graceful, and even miraculous animals that are featured within. This book is one for the keeper shelf!

I was only able to view a small sample from this book, but the photos was beautiful. The word "otherwordly" comes to mind.

I enjoyed the short copy and interesting facts about these fascinating creatures. I'm looking forward to seeing the whole book when it's released in April 2022!

In this enthralling book, there are the most mesmerizing photographs of octopus, seahorse and jellyfish that will show the incredible beauty of these creatures. The photographer has developed a style of taking the photographs that fascinated me. His photographs are paired with essays giving an explanation of how they perceive their world. I can’t imagine anyone not liking this book. It is unique!

I received a sample of this primarily photo book from National Geographic via Netgalley. Photos in this book are incredible, which is why I was so sad about the dearth of them. The text was brief, which was perfect because I really just wanted to see the pics.

Although I only received a brief sample, I was captivated by the photos and subject matter. These three sea creatures are fascinating and I'm usually intrigued by anything about them. The bits of text that were included seem to be at an easily accessible level, so this might be a book that could be shared with children. I wish the sample were a little longer so I could get a better sense of the content, but I look forward to browsing through through the full text when it's published in April!

Using top-quality National Geographic images, this small sampler from Octopus, Seahorse, Jellyfish tells the story of three of the most fascinating sea creatures. The images are detailed and vivid. The book is described as adult non-fiction, but the small amount of text included in the sampler also seems more appropriate for older children and is conversational in tone rather than factually dense as expected. It's hard to give an accurate assessment based on the limited number of pages shown, but what I did see seems more appropriate for collections for middle-grade readers.

Octopuses, seahorses, and jellyfish...oh, my! National Geographic does it again with another breathtaking book filled with detailed color photographs of some of the oceans' most elusive and camera-shy beauties. Informative essays are short and easy to understand for the layman. This book would make a great gift to any lover of the sea, artist, or just as an addition to one's coffee table collection. Glide through this seamless sea of information and awe-inspiring photographs.

*I received an ebook copy of this book in exchange for an honest opinion via Netgalley.com.

This book has some gorgeous pictures in it and the information I was able to read was fascinating. I wish that I could have read more than a few pages, but it will definitely be worth the time to read and look through when you can see the whole book. This would be an excellent addition to a classroom or homeschooling.

My rating is lower only because I can't see more than 16 specific pages in this sample.

This 16 page sample looks amazing, something right up my alley. I'm looking forward to seeing the finished item.

I read this 16 page sample and thought it had great potential to be a 5 star book. However because this book was a very very short sample I couldn't really get a good feel for the book. I really loved the photographs but would of preferred more of them instead of what might of been computer generated images within the text. The sample was written brilliantly but when it didn't finish the sentence I was reading i could of cried but this just shows how much I want to read this book so it must be good. The cover is fantastic a great image so beautiful and pure. I have everything crossed that I can read the whole book and get involved in the blog tour for this book. This is definitely my type of book with my science background.
Thanks to the author and publishing team for allowing me to read this sample and allowing me to have this short experience of a potentially brilliant non fiction book.

From this small preview I can tell that this will be a book that I will cherish. While my kids were growing up we spent countless hours watching jellyfish. I can't wait to see all of the beautiful photos and learn more about all of these animals.

Note that reviewers such as myself are allowed only an ebook version and in this case only a 16 page sample of the actual book, so it's hard to make a good judgment from this. It's not like it's a work of fiction where you can read a few pages and tell pretty quickly if the book is well-written or a piece of trash, so this review is only of the sample I received, of which only five pages were the actual book, the rest being introductory preface, contents, etc. So not much of a sample!

The second problem with getting only the ebook version is that you can't comment on the print version, nor can I say if this is ever going to be released as an ebook. I suspect not, but that's just an opinion. The problem with the ebook is that the publisher made the dire mistake of releasing it in Kindle format. I have said this many times and I say it again: unless your book is plain vanilla text (without even so much as dropcaps) it's a grave mistake to put it into Kindle format because Amazon's crappy Kindle process will, nine times out of ten, reduce it to kindling. In the Kindle version, viewed on an a standard iPad, it trashed pictures, slicing and dicing and Julienning them turning the book into a disordered jumble. The book looked much better in Blue Fire Reader and in Adobe Digital Editions.

The pictures, when presented properly, were beautiful to look at and the supporting text informative. Based on this sample alone, the book appears to be a worthy read.

4.5 ☆

David Liittschwager provided the gorgeous, stunning photographs for Octopus, Seahorse, Jellyfish. This glossy coffee table book has three chapters, each penned by a different contributor:
Octopus by evolutionary biologist Olivia Judson
Seahorse by Jennifer Holland
Jellyfish by Elizabeth Kolbert, who wrote The Sixth Extinction: An Unnatural History.

I was provided a sample of only 16 pages, 2 of which were for the front and back covers. The sample included mostly photographs, and they were spectacular (10 stars worthy)!! As long as the narrative is decent, this will be a 5-star book that anybody interested in sealife will be pleased to possess. But since my book ratings are based on a book's entirety, the narrative in the sample was too scant to merit an unqualified 5 stars. My rating is thus 4.5 stars, rounded down.

Thank you to National Geographic and Netgalley for providing me with a digital sample ARC in exchange for an honest review. This review is based upon an uncorrected proof (ISBN 978-1-4262-2179-8). Publication date is April 5, 2022.

What amazing photographs in this book! I was blown away by the clarity and interesting animals. I received just a sample of this book, and although is was very short, it was engaging and made me want to read more. I will definitely be reading the rest of this book when it comes out!

I received a copy of this book through Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. I was not required to write a positive review, and all thoughts and opinions are my own.

The available sample of this title is very limited, but the pictures in this book are incredible, David Liittschwager is so talented. With more than 200 of his photographs included, I have no doubt it's one of those books I could spend hours getting lost in and learning about these almost otherworldly creatures. I love that the biology of these animals is written in a way that anybody can understand and I appreciate the emphasis that although this beautiful sea life is rarely seen - they are endangered.
