It was helpful in my daily Bible study, I like having different resources as I study. The layout is easy to follow and the comments are insightful. Be advise that this is an overview of Jesus and the church. That being said it was helpful in my studies. The author provides links to articles. This is written from a Christian perspective and I recommend this book if you are starting your Christian journey into Bible study or if you are a season pro at your studies.

A very general, big picture commentary on the Gospels and the book of Acts.

The commentary is developed from a Restoration Movement, Churches of Christ perspective. It features introductory articles on authorship and nature of the Gospels and Acts and then specific comments on the various sections of the books.

A helpful resource for those interested in learning more about the Bible.

The Transforming Word Series Vol 4. by Mark Hamilton

This is an in-depth look into the life of Jesus and his followers at the time of the gospels. It was very enlightening and informative and shed light on a time where there is little writing.

The Transforming Word Series, Volume 4 is a helpful commentary on the 4 Gospels and Acts, i.e. The first 5 books of the New Testament. The series is written from a Christian perspective. Given the size of this book and the breadth of scriptural material it is providing commentary on, one must accept that this series is providing an overview, not verse by verse exegesis. The commentary is helpful in gaining an overview what is happening. Similar to the other books in this series, the author highlights areas of textural and translation difficulty. I found these notes to be helpful to my understanding. The author also provides reference to scholarly articles that provide more depth to the issues that have been raised. Overall, I have found this commentary to be helpful as one reference in my study of the Gospels and Acts. I think this book may be helpful as a reference source for ministers, preachers, church leaders, seminary students and those with a desire to gain a greater understanding of scripture.

Another solid offering in the Transforming Word Series, this volume covers the Gospels and Acts wit some other topical chapters. This is a summary commentary but it is good with valuable information. Use alongside your Bible, not designed to just be read cover to cover alone.

Really enjoyed this, helped me to decipher what I was reading in the Bible into something that I could understand in the context of the world we live in today, and my place in it. Thanks to the author, publisher and netgalley for the arc.

Book 4 of a five (5) volume set that tries to provide some context and commentary to the Bible with this book focused on the four (4) Gospels and Acts. Like the other books in the series, each chapter stands on its own, written by different authors from the point of view a scholars in the Christian Restoration (Stone/Campbell) tradition. The first three (3) chapters provide a contextual overview of the time of Christ before diving into the first five (5) books of the New Testament. Once there, each chapter is organized the same way with material groups into: Context, Commentary, Topical Exegesis, Theological Reflections, For Further Study and Works Cited.

It is important to know that this is still a summary commentary and each section generally provides a single interpretation (often with a mention of some of the stronger alternatives). The context and overviews are extremely helpful and you get an excellent feel for how each Gospel is organized and who the target audience was, but you don’t see any in-depth treatment of how the source Greek was interpreted, so this volume would actually be a good companion to a detailed commentary that walks through the Greek instead of something that stands on its own. Still, if you are at all familiar with the text, there aren’t any surprises or controversies here and I highly recommend the entire series.
