Absolutely fantastic piece of scholarship - and one that will be useful for a great number of scholars in the future. The contextualizing essays that surround the dictionary are stellar and I appreciate the placement of the author with the text, and the text within the larger cultural zeitgeist.

Must read to understand the devastating effects of slavery on the single individuals.
I would not describe it as a non fictional book nor even an essay, the title suggested it best: it's a dictionary of lives.

This book was an eye opener. I love reading informative text from slavery times. I love that these moments are preserved by the people who experienced and them and not by people observing them. I think that reading these, no matter how hard is important for personal knowledge and growth. This book brings the people in these books to life and not just ideas. This is a very informative.

Very interesting read, a must read in my opinion to understand a little bit better about this sensitive topic

This book was an account of enslaved people in the Maritimes of Canada. People whos voices were silenced or lost to time. Some are just names, some have a brief description. Two things I noticed while reading this book. The first was how repetitive it was, the descriptions, the names, the lack of information. The second thing was how much this bothered me. Over and over and over and over names, lack of information and brief descriptions... this was really impactful in creating a small pocket where these people who were lost to time have been named, and are not completely lost. They lived and they mattered.

I received a copy of this from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

This is not something that should be rated lightly. I thought that this was going to be more of a non fiction book as opposed to a more textbook style. This was a very informative read that contained a lot of information and I am thankful that I was given the opportunity to read it. I think that this is something that is important to read to understand more of the history of Canada.

Thank you Harvey Amani Whitfield for putting this together.

This tome is meticulously researched and catalogued, but it lost a lot in my case because it cannot be obtained in TTS. If you have better eyesight, you will gain much from the author's diligence and ability to present a mountain of information about individuals in a particular geographical and historical time.
I requested and received a free temporary e-book from University of Toronto Press/UTP via NetGalley.

Well written, descriptive book on slavery in Canada, the American influence, and heart wrenching stories of slavery and its effect. Thorough and well done.
