This book starts out like a slightly sci-fi-ier version of V for Vendetta or The Man in the High Castle and then adds demons and vampire priests and completely loses me. Like... why do we need demons and vampires in this? Also, a major issue with this book is that it feels very much like a "first in a trilogy" and doesn't really stand on its own. Books like this are why I don't typically choose to read series at all – if your work can't stand alone without me needing to invest a significant amount of time to consuming multiple volumes I just do not care to engage with it. Full disclosure, I engaged with this because I was given a copy of the ARC by NetGalley.

I enjoyed this book. I have been reading a lot of the same type of book, this one, but I don’t know, I think the writing style just put me in a massive reading slump. The story was interesting, but the way it was written just wasn’t for me. I loved the format though.
