Her Forbidden Highlander Husband
By Allison B. Hanson

Let me start off this review by saying that I had no idea that this was the third in the series when I started the book. So I was a little confused at first because this is the kind of romance book where you would probably need to read the first two before reading the third. However my view of the book would probably have not changed.

Liam and Evelyn were characters I had a hard time getting know. The initial four chapters I really like Evelyn for she seemed very outgoing even though all of the things that had happened to her, but then her attitude towards Liam did a complete 180 and I was not a fan. If it wasn’t for this review I probably would not have finished reading because of that.

Throughout I liked it then didn’t repeatedly because the scenes would slow down and there was a lot of empty space. Just nothing would be happening and I found it hard to continue enjoying the book because of it. But I did like the children side plot and wish that that was incorporated more. It would have gave Liam and Evelyn more character.

Now finally the ending, which I was so glad to get to. But it did not bring what I was hoping for to redeem the book. Hanson sort of just through another plotpoint into the book with 10 percent left and made it resolve really easily. The whole time I was reading it, I felt awkward because it was an awkward exchange along with it not bringing anything to the story.

I really hate giving books low reviews but with this I could not help it.

Thank you to Entangled Publishing and Netgalley for allowing me the opportunity to review ths book.

So let me start off by saying there are some triggers in this book and so for me it was a hard read. Those triggers being rape and ptsd.

Liam is the kinda guy you want to get a happy ending. After his rough start in life he finds his place as War Chief in the MacKinlay Clan. Now after saving her he longs to marry Everlyn but she is expected to marry from another clan to form alliance.

The book was good but the ending felt like it was tied but too neatly with a bow.

This is a story of two people finding their way in a world that has treated them cruelly.

Liam was an orphan at four years of age and found on the MacKinlay clan’s land. Since that day he was taken in and considered a MacKinlay. Although Liam rose to the rank of war chief fighting for his adopted clan, he struggles with accepting that he is a true member of the MacKinlay's and seeks to create his own family by marrying Evelyn.

Evelyn is the heroine of this story. She is distrustful of men and their motives since growing up around a father who sees her as a commodity, and from her trauma in being abducted and assaulted by multiple captors.

Liam has been infatuated with Evelyn Stewart for years. To the extent that he has asked her father, Laird of the Stewart clan, for her hand in marriage several times and has been denied a third time when we meet him at the start of the novel. Evelyn is so desperate to get away from her father’s machinations that she marry the heir of the Morgan clan, so she approaches Liam as he is leaving and tells him that she wants to marry him if he will have her. From that moment on, certain truths come to light that paint Evelyn in a sympathetic, as well as unfavorable light through her own actions towards Liam.

Liam is such a sweetheart of a man. I don’t know that I have come across many hero’s in romance that are so patient and kind from the very start. He is strong, loving, and gentle. If anything goes wrong in their relationship he is quick to take the blame whether or not he is at fault. A lot of his reactions stem from his abandonment as a child. My heart went out to him so many times.

I found myself disappointed with Evelyn several times due to her proclivity towards jumping to conclusions, and usually the worst conclusions. Her accusations were very hurtful towards Liam, especially after he had proven that he has a heart of gold. I tried to keep in mind that her trauma was at the center of her reactions, yet her repetitive behavior to blame then realize her mistake after reacting became tiresome.

The wrap-up of the plot towards the end was tied up entirely too neatly and it was a bit of a let down from my expectations. If anything, this story did a nice job of highlighting found families and perseverance in love and our relationships with one another.

CW: Mention of kidnapping and sexual assault, domestic abuse, child abuse.

This one was quite a bit different than what I was expecting, but I still enjoyed it. It's been a few days since I finished it, so this review is going to be even less sophisticated than normal, but oh well.

Anyway, I really enjoyed this romance! I loved that it really worked with the slowburn, or at least, slow build. Especially considering Evelyn's trauma. We needed to get to know them separately before we got to know them together, and I loved that this took the time for that.

I also loved the found family trope in this one! It was so adorable, and the family they built was a sure highlight.

I don't feel like writing much else, but I'd definitely recommend this one! It was a super fun read, and a motivation to continue experimenting with Highlander romances

Thanks to Netgalley for providing a free copy in exchange for an honest review!

This is the third book involving the Clan MacKinlay
A historical romance set in the Highlands with troubles along the way.
However, you don't need to read the others to enjoy this so
If you're a historical romance fan, I recommend you give it a go!

Evelyn Stewart, the laird's daughter, was captured and abused,
Before being rescued and returned to her father who wasn't amused.
He also wasn't supportive about her dreadful ordeal
Never being caring, or concerned about how she'd feel.

Liam MacKinlay was one of the men who saved her
And helped reassure her that he and his men were there.
He fell in love with her on the journey to return her home
Losing his heart to her then for it never more to roam.

When Liam asks three times her father's permission her to marry
Her father says no and tells him not to tarry.
But Evelyn fears her fathers plans, and decides to take a chance
On marrying Liam and going with him as her chance for romance.

However, there are secrets and some mysteries, too,
Liam doesn't know his own past and isn't sure what to do
But his attraction to Evelyn overcomes his fears
You'll need to read it for yourself to see if it ends in tears!

It is a story of a true gentleman, although a warrior bold
Who loves sincerely and dreams of a family to hold.
There are delightful children who all have their part
And whose actions and love will surely win your heart.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading my complementary copy of this book
It is definitely one that is worth more than just a look.
This is my honest review
As I recommend this book to you!

Since review might not matter since the book has been published and archived but it was a fairly routine Scottish story that was fine and satisfying but nothing special. There are lots of stories about scots like it.

I received an ARC from the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

CW for rape off page.

This book made me feel lots of things. It was extremely emotional dealing with Evelyn's trauma due to being kidnapped and raped. Liam heals Evelyn, but it's a bumpy road filled with times where things are not easy for them. Liam is so kind and understanding, and helps Evelyn overcome her trauma while building a true and lasting love.

I really did enjoy this, but some parts were very heavy. I was not expecting some of the feelings that it was making me feel. Liam was a perfect hero who was patient in a situation that could be rather difficult, and he dealt with all of Evelyn's triggers and issues by earning her trust and taking their relationship slow. I loved watching their love bloom slowly over many chapters, but I wish that things had been smoothed over so easily at the end. It wrapped up too easily in my opinion.

Third in the Clan McKinlay series, Her Forbidden Highlander Husband, is set in the Scottish Highlands in 1664. I loved the first two books and expected to love this one too. For the most part, I did, though there were one or two flat patches along the way. This is a deeply emotional story that will not appeal to all readers as it contains a number of possible triggers. The driving forces behind Evelyn and Liam’s story are rape and child abuse, some aspects of which are fairly detailed. I found those scenes fairly disturbing, though they were well written. I certainly came away from each of them with a fresh respect for Liam and Evelyn. Despite these triggers, I enjoyed reading this story. I’m not sure whether it is the last in the series but if not I’ll happily devour the next book.

Firstly, thank you for allowing me to read this ARC.

Having read the first two books in this series and loving them, I thought I'd love this one as well, but I didn't. I'm not sure why, but I really found Evelyn unlikable. I should've been able to sympathize with everything that she had gone through, but over half way into the book, I really did not care for her. The overall plot is quite similar to the first two books as well, which made it feel repetitive. I'm not a bug historical romance reader, so I'm not sure if the same could be said for the entire genre. That being said, Liam was a great character, he was the bright spot in this one for me.

Evelyn Stewart ran away from home and was captured and abused in the worst way. The MacKinlay
Clan was one of the clans to rescue her. Liam MacKinley had seen her and wanted to marry her. Her father was not kind to his daughter after she was rescued. Her father had just told her that he found a husband for her in the Morgan Clan. They lived a bit of a jaunt away from her home. But she was ruined. But her father did not care.

Liam had become war chief and got a room to go with it so he could have a wife. He had already asked for Evelyn twice and he would ask one more time. As he is getting ready to leave, she comes to the stable and tells him, she will marry him. They get married but before she leaves she needs to stop in the village. To Liam's surprise, she comes out with a daughter.

Liam is a strong man. He is kind and sweet, and he loves a lot. He wants a family of his own. He did not know who he was. As a small child, he was found wandering in a field close to the MacKinlay's. The Laird brought him home.

I loved this story, there is a lot of twists to it. Evelyn has been deeply hurt and wants nothing to do with men. Liam knows what happened and decided to respect her and take it slow and easy. Such a thoughtful and kind man. I loved the way he treated the children and her. The author made the book, smooth, well written, and interesting. It is entertaining and exciting. The characters are supportive and willing to help if they can. It is a beautiful Novel.

I received this ARC from Net Galley and voluntarily reviewed it.

I have read the previous two books in this series and liked them but this one just had too much weighing it down. I just didnt care for it as much. As has been mentioned by other reviewers, there is a lot of heavy dramatic things that have happened to both these characters and that are still to happen. I felt like having that dark cloud over them both to even start just set things off on the wrong foot, plus what I really did not care for was Evelyn. She is a user, yes, she has been used herself in many ways but I just felt she had a chip on her shoulder that needed knocking down a few notches. Liam has a heart of gold and I so felt for him every time Ev would give him the cold shoulder.

Overall the author does a superb job of writing and in fleshing out the characters and story line but it didn't leave me with good feels, even after a HEA. I also felt like there was a lot of filler with the last half of the book. There are several things (her past is the big one) that are repeated over and over and over! The ending was good however.
I would recommend this if you are a fan of the other Highland Husband books. I think it helped to have read the others before this one but this can be read as a stand alone.
I received an advanced copy in exchange for my review.

Liam is up against a stubborn father when it comes to who he wants to Wed. During those times it was about prestige and honor but that still didn't cut it for the father still said no. Evelyn knows she needs to marry well but not the unknown her father has chosen. The two decide to connect but it also causes a uproar. Some spice has been put into this one. Turn the pages and see the Turn of events.

I did feel for Evelyn, she had suffered an ordeal and then to be treated as she was by her father, this explains why she felt unable to trust men.
Evelyn was fortunate to find someone who was as patient and understanding as Liam. Liam was surely one in a million. Liam has always wanted a family, he wanted to feel as he belonged to someone. There is also a mystery as to where Liam came from. I was surprised by the ending in the epilogue. I found this to be an entertaining read. I received a copy and have voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

This story intrigued me from the start. I loved how it began with Liam already in love with Evelyn and wishing to marry her. Unfortunately for him, her father keeps rejecting his proposal of marriage. But as they say, third time is the charm. Things are rarely as simple as they seem and soon, Liam will learn that there is a reason why Evelyn agrees to marry him and it is most definitely not love. Still, he vows to wait for her for as long as it takes. Evelyn won't fall in love easily, but there might yet be a HEA is their future.
It's a beautifully written historical romance novel, which I thoroughly enjoyed reading and would recommend to anyone looking for a good, heartwarming story.

An amazing talent for pacing had me devouring this book faster than I wanted to. I didn’t want it to end.
The third in the Clan MacKinlay Series, the author continues her amazing skill at plotting and pacing. Once again, this was a book I wanted to (and did) devour, but also tried to restrain myself to not let it be over.

Once again, illustrating how open and honest communication is the key to any healthy relationship.
With Her Accidental Highlander Husband, I stated: “the main characters each try to hold secret their own troubles, but won’t abide that is the other, which results in them actually talking to each other and sharing their burdens – like a really couple….for too long we’ve been show that each individual should sacrifice themselves (mentally, emotionally, etc.) to soldier on and be the strong one. This book shows a true partnership and is amazing.”

With Her Reluctant Highlander Husband, I claimed: “the characters get married early in the book and then have to deal with the troubles that come up in typical married life – dealing with your partners past, traumatic or not; learning to communicate your needs, wants, and dislikes; and overcoming obstacles as a team.”

These statements carry on in my admiration for Her Forbidden Highlander Husband, but that is not to imply that these books are redundant. This third book, wonderfully shows how Liam has watched the healthy relationships bloom around him, has wished for that for himself, learned from those who went before him, and then still had to figure out how is own relationship would need to work. As. We. All. Do.

This third book of the Clan MacKinlay series does NOT disappoint.

I have been really enjoying this series so far, and this one was just as good as the first two
The only thing that Liam McKinley wants is to have a family of his own.. He was adopted by his current clan at the a young age, and while he has always been welcomed there, he has always felt apart.. He would like to start a family with Evelyn Stewart. Ever since he met her years previously, he has known that she is the woman he wants to marry, unfortunately her father doesn't feel the same and has denied the marriage request twice already..
Evelyn has experience sexual assult in the past, and at the moment her father is trying to marry her off.. She knows that she will never be able to be with another man, so when the opportunity arises she takes it and they elope. He already knows what happened to her and still wants to get married.

Liam is a really wonderful guy, he does everything he can to make Evelyn feel at ease.. Even if he had on some rose colored glasses thinking they would get married and just be a happily married couple right away.. He knows about what happened to her, but doesn't fully realize how it still effects her.

This is a slow burn romance, as Evelyn slowly realizes that she can trust Liam, and that she can have those kinds of feelings for another man after what she experienced. They both make alot of mistakes with each other, but it all felt very real to me.. Which made things all the sweeter when they finally realize that they love each other..

This is a really beautiful story about how family isn't only whose blood you carry, but also the family you make yourself.. and Liam and Evelyn have made a truly beautiful family with each other. .

I love the McKinley Clan so much.. They are all so excepting and loving.. I can't wait to get more from this series!

This was an entertaining, well-written book. It was fast-paced and held my interest. I enjoyed this book and would recommend it to others.

This Author writes about each character in this book as though she was their sister. I loved the people in this story so much that I spent much of my time reading through my tears (happy and sad).

I absolutely adored Liam while my heart was breaking for him. Evelyn was the woman whom he loved after rescuing her from the m circus who abused her sexually for weeks to months. Liam gave her time to heal then went to her father to request her hand in marriage twice but was denied both time. When he is made war chief of his clan and he is given his own room in the castle so he again requests Evelyn's hand. He is denied for the third and final time. Evelyn had listened at the door. She ran to pack her things because she decided to marry Liam. She found him the barn. This is their love story.

Her Forbidden Highlander Husband by Allison B. Hanson
Clan MacKinley #3

Evelyn and Liam both had difficult pasts but became strong and resilient over time. This book is a slower building romance that is worth waiting for when the two finally find their way. A nice addition to the series.

What I liked:
* Evelyn: paid a high price when she ran away when younger, kidnapped by rough men, abused, eventually returned home, considered damaged goods, but also a bargaining chip to her father.
* Liam: war chief of the MacKinlay Clan, orphan, has fleeting memories of his past, has always wanted a family to belong to, dreams of having Evelyn as his wife, a wonderful man that deserved the best.
* That the chemistry was not instant…at least on Evelyn’s part.
* That Liam was willing to wait for Evelyn and take it slow
* Gwennie: a sweet child born of rape but loved all the same
* The way Liam was willing to take in children and create a family
* Getting to see the characters from the previous two books in the series
* The way the women talked together, shared responsibilities, and were friends in the castle
* The relationship between the husbands and wives
* That the clan stood together
* The swift judgement of those that infringed on the clan
* The way Liam eventually found out who his sire was
* That it seemed true to the times
* It made me think about what happened to orphaned children left from parents killed in battles
* It made me glad to be me and living in this era even though times can sometimes still be tough

What I didn’t like:
* The way Evelyn’s father treated her
* Knowing that women were considered chattel and the possession of their father then their spouse
* What Liam and Evelyn suffered in the past

Did I enjoy this book? Yes
Would I read more in this series? Yes
