I DNF’s this book at 60%. While it was an interesting concept and the writing was solid, I just wasn’t sold on the robot who was purchased to be a wife, adopted a child to become a mother and then run for President once the child was grown up idea. Too many of the characters were all for it and those that weren’t were looked down upon. For myself at this stage in time, I am just unable to put my belief aside for this type of story. Also I doubt that any human would willing elect a machine to the highest office that has a potential of being “ hacked” and reprogrammed from afar.

It is the year 2520, and the United States of America is grossly overpopulated, with billions of people homeless and the environment on the brink of collapse.

And it is the year a sentient robot - and wife of a political lobbyist - runs for government.

The idea behind this book was really good - the concept of independent, sentient robots governing over the human population was intriguing, and the speculative technology introduced was a lot of fun (and, frankly, entirely plausible).

But overall I found the writing stilted, flat, and bogged down in unnecessary minutiae (how often do we need to red the interaction between a main character's mother and their digital assistant?), and side characters. As a non-American, I also found there was too much detail about the entire US political system - there are assumptions that can be made in this sort of futuristic speculative fiction that don't necessarily need the amount of detail that were given.

It was an OK read; not a great one. 3 stars.

I was super excited to read The First Robot President when I first came upon this story. I started to read it and was thrown off. There was so much sexism written into the story. I didn't like how Thomas treated Esmerelda, his sister and his mother. He bossed each of them around.

I found the author to have written the story in a misogynistic way. I found the political aspect to be written in a way that clearly showed that author doesn't like either of the political parties. The author was definitely showcasing his opinion on many things throughout this book.

I did read the whole thing as I was curious as to how it ended. It skipped around a lot, especially in the future. I wish it explained more of what happened instead of this happened during this year and then this year.

The idea was good, but the way it was written was not really good. I just had the impression to read a book written by a kid

Overall I enjoyed reading this book. I think it was very interesting in concept. The main thing that kept me going was how things were going to turn out. Naturally I was able to guess some of what happened but not other parts of it.

I have 2 major things that really didn’t make the experience as amazing as it could have been.

1) the writing at times was bland and robotic. It was a little too much exposition and often just bored me. I get that in order to move things along how they were supposed to, there needed some telling instead of showing but I feel like it happened a little too often.

2) at times the characters felt a little flat. This kind of goes in hand with the writing as those were the moments when they felt the most uninteresting

Book received for free through NetGalley

Read 21% of the way into this book but kept starting and stopping. I had trouble getting into it and figured it was better to review as is. It was written well just not my cup of tea.

I really liked the idea of this one - sentient robots with political satire? Sign me up. And while there were some really fun ideas in this I did struggle a bit with the dialogue because it just didn't feel natural to me. I also wish it pushed some of the ideas more and there were some that were never addressed when I really wish that were. Still a lot of fun and I personally welcome a robot president lol.

An enjoyable and thought-provoking book. The title was intriguing but I really did not expect much. I was pleasantly surprised by how interesting the book turned out to be.

But before I go on, I mentioned the title caught my interest so I should mention that. The title is “The First Robot President“ and it’s by Robert Carlyle Taylor.

I believe we are facing both a climate crisis and a population crisis. The book addresses both and by setting the novel about 500 years in the future shows clearly the consequences of our failures to act.

I found the story well done and it was a fairly quick read. It was interesting to watch the changes in attitudes about the robot as well as the robot’s developing intelligence. The novel works on several levels.

Of course some will agree with the political views expressed and others will disagree. But in either case this is worth reading.

I got bored with this one. I am guessing it just isn’t for me or I just wasn’t in the mood for it.
