This memoir was an emotional and visual feast for the senses. Chef Suzanne Barr takes us through her life from childhood up to the present, and shows us how food, specifically her experiences with food prepared by her mother, allowed her to connect with her family's Jamaican culture. She shares with us how those experiences and memories led to her entering the culinary field fairly late, after her mother had passed, it became a way to honor her mother and feel connected to her.
However, the culinary world has not been all hunky dory, especially for a chef who is a woman and a black woman at that. Suzanne enlightens us to the realities of running your own restaurant and the pitfalls that can occur.
This was such an interesting and engaging read, especially the family dynamics and the conversations around food.
