The Second Marriage by Jess Ryder is a slow-burning psychological mystery/thriller. Lily starts homeschooling Edward's son, Noah. Lily and Edward fall in love, get married, and on their wedding day, Noah mentions that his mother is alive and that he remembers everything that everyone tries to hide. Lily does some investigating and finds out a whole bunch of stuff. That's somewhat it in a nutshell. My big problem with this book is that Edward is a total twit and very unlikeable from the start. The entire book seems to be about uncovering the plethora of lies that Edward has been telling everyone. Why Lily feels like she needs to solve this "mystery" even though she just married Edward and they barely dated before getting married, is beyond me. Once I started learning that my jerk of a husband had been lying about MAJOR issues, I would have been out of there. Regardless, I didn't really love any of the characters, which makes for a slow listen.

I feel like this book was an attempt to follow along the psychological lines of Gone Girl but just doesn't pull it off with quite the same finesse. Rosamund Hine did a great job narrating the story though, and brought life to the characters, and was very easy to understand (for an American listener and a British narrator).

Thank you to NetGalley and Jess Ryder for this Audio-ARC in exchange for my honest feedback and review.

Lilly marries a man who seems perfect. Edward is a widower with 3 children. Lilly starts teaching the youngest, Noah, in private and falls for Edward quickly. When Noah becomes upset on their wedding night and tells Lilly that he remembers even though his dad doesn't want him to. What does Noah remember? His mommy. She is now trying to contact Noah even though she's supposed to be dead. Will Lilly learn the truth?

I truly enjoyed this audiobook. The narrator's voice felt like the voice of the characters. I would have liked a little more background and flushing out of the characters. I feel like the introduction to various characters was a little quick and just like here they are. I didn't mind the time hopping but feel like it could have been done in an intriguing way not just trying to give the series of events. Overall I enjoyed this book and look forward to reading more by this author.

This was a very well written book. It was easy to follow and the audiobook and narrator were excellent! The storyline unfolded slowly as you follow Edward the widower as he meets and marries his second wife. Little does she know her relationship with his youngest son, Noah, will put her into a tailspin as she finds out he remembers more than his dad gives him credit for. What happened to his first wife? You think you have the mystery figured out from the beginning but of course there's a great twist at the end. It kept me engulfed in the storyline from beginning to end!

Lilly just married Edward who is a widower. But when her new stepson is convinced his mother is still alive. Lilly then starts to look into what happened to Noah's mother.

To me this was an OK thriller, but the majority of the mystery was just how many lies Edward can tell before he gets caught.Unfortunately, it was not as engaging as I would have hoped.

Thank you to NetGalley and Bootouture Audio for an advanced audiobook for review.

This was just a really satisfying psychological thriller! Lily marries the older widower, Edward, just six months after meeting him. She believes he is the one but her rush to the alter will have consequences. Lily begins to wonder how well she really knows Edward when little things just don't add up.

This isn't one of those thrillers where you are biting your nails to the nub because the heroine is constantly in mortal danger and you feel like you ran a marathon by the end. This one just grabs your attention and keeps you slightly off-balance the whole way through. You want to know what happens next, but you aren't in physical anguish. I would call it a very satisfying, light read. I loved it!

This one sounded like a really twisty psychological thriller and had me so intrigued and it really didn’t disappoint. It was done and dusted in a day - think that says it all. I’ve got so much done just so I could keep listening. It’s a really good listen with an engaging but easy to listen to narrator. It had me gripped from the first word. Loved the pace of the storyline and you were given just enough information to keep you guessing and wanting more. I really liked the main character Lilly, her way of thinking and how she approached different situations. There were some not so likeable characters along with those you liked one minute and the next you wanted to knock there block off. Really liked this authors style of writing and would be interested to read more of her work.

Thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture Audio for the opportunity to listen to and review this ARC that was published today.

Very engaging audiobook - excellent narration by by Rosamund Hine.

Lily seems to have it all - she’s marrying a good-looking, wealthy older widower with a young son Noah. She lives with them in a beautiful house in West Hampstead. But everything is not as it seems and Lily is far from having it all - she’s in living in a perfectly unhappy family with a controlling husband and there’s a mystery surrounding Noah’s mother.

Lots of twists and turns that I did not predict and the epilogue tied everything together.

Huge thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture or this advance listening copy and introducing me to Jess Ryder. I will definitely seek out her other books.

⭐⭐⭐.5/5

• well-narrated (a British narrator, yay!)
• enjoyed the dual timelines
• didn't love any of the characters

This one drew me in instantly and has an engaging plot. The ending seemed to drag out a little for me, but I did enjoy the epilogue. I'll be interested to read more from this new-to-me author!

Lily has got a job teaching Noah. A boy who lives behind closed doors in Hampsted with his father Edward. Lily and Edward grow close and her proposes. Edwards two older daughters are not impressed. They have never gotten over the tragic death of their mother.
On the night of her wedding Lily goes to say goodnight to Noah. He chills her by saying that his mother in not really dead.
As Edward becomes more controlling, Lily has more questions. Why are there no photo's of Noah and his mum? Why is Noah so isolated? What secrets are Edward hiding?
As her happy marriage begins to crumble, questions need to be answered.
I loved this book. It was fast paced and held my attention. I alternated between text and and audiobook as I was so engrossed in the story. A very quick read. Would be perfect to be made into a TV film.
Many thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and listen to this book

Edward, widower recently married Lily, his son Noah’s private teacher. They should be on top of the world right now. However, after Lily’s wedding bouquet is placed on Edward’s first wife’s grave, and her step son Noah tells her his mother is still alive, Lily begins to question her seemingly perfect new husband.

What really happened to Edward’s first wife and why is he intent on trying to make his son forget about her.

I listened to the audiobook and it was a pretty good thriller.

Thank you to Netgalley and the Bookouture Audio for this arc.

First comes love, then comes marriage, then you find out he’s…. A murderer?

In this chilling new story from Jess Ryder, Lily thinks she’s met the love of her life until she finds out that he’s lying… about everything.

MV rating: 7/10
•The narrator for the story is five star, which is so important for an audiobook.
•From the first chapter, this story had me hooked. Everything starts so simply, and twists in ways I couldn’t predict from there.
• Although this could have easily fallen into a cliched story about first wives, affairs, etc., it didn’t - masterfully written, I could totally see this turning into a film or Netflix series in the future.
•Just when you think that all is well, another twist is in store. Will definitely be exploring more from the author based on this book.

Thank you to Netgalley, Jess Ryder, and Bookouture Audio for the advanced reader copy.

They’re lying,’ my little stepson whispers, his blue eyes shining with tears as I tuck him into bed for the first time. ‘They think I’ve forgotten, but I remember everything. I know my mummy is still alive.’

Lily is newly wed to Edward in a whirlwind of a marriage which her best friend tried to warn her against, Edward is 15 years her senior and her friend thinks things are moving too fast. All Lily sees is a kind, loving man who adores her, why wait? It's only when it comes to the day of her wedding that things start to fall apart - her wedding bouquet being placed on the grave of his first wife by Edward's older, hostile daughters, then there's the troubling things her little stepson says to her...could Noah's mother still be alive? What does he remember that his father is trying to make him forget?

The Second Marriage is a fantastic mystery/psychological thriller, I loved this book! I was utterly engrossed - there were so many twists, it was impossible for me to guess the outcome. It's one of those stories with a lot of edge of seat moments where I wanted to shout "what are you doing?!" at the main character, there are some really intense scenes! I found it very easy to get into and extremely hard to put down. Rosamund Hine narrated this so well, she really brought out the unease and suspense of the story.

Lily has just married Edward after a whirlwind relationship and she seems to have it all. Even though it was quick and she really knows nothing about him, she marries him and is now a part of his life along with his two adult daughters and young son Noah. He is a widow, rich, handsome, and he loves her...what more could she ask for? Her best friend has a bad feeling about him and the marriage and Lily thinks she is being over cautious. That is until her stepson reveals that no matter what his daddy says, his mother is still alive.

Is Noah making things up? Should Lily have taken the time to actually get to know her husband before marrying him (duh)? As she settles into her new life, she begins to discover that nothing is as it seems. She slowly uncovers the truth in this domestic mystery that will keep you guessing up until the shocking conclusion.
