I loved this book! The descriptions of the time in which it was set was fantastic. Gail Meath has created and brought to life unforgettable characters. A story about a detective, his dog, and a beautiful lady in distress who can take care of herself but needs the help of that handsome detective. Thank you to #netgalley, the publisher, and #gailmeath for my requested ARC in exchange for my honest opinion. #songbird

I loved this mystery set in the roaring twenties with a slight hardboiled detective and his dog. You don’t see too many historical mysteries with a dog sidekick. And of course I’m always a sucker for any books set in the roaring twenties.

I am reviewing a copy of Songbird through the author and Netgalley:

In Songbird we will meet Jax Diamond, a sharp, sophisticated, skilled, no-nonsense private detective. Or is he?

Always by his side is his canine partner, Ace, a fierce and unrelenting German Shepherd whose mere presence terrorizes criminals into submission. Or maybe not.

The two of them though are a lot smarter than they look. And they have their hands full when a playwright’s death is declared natural causes, and his new manuscript worth a million bucks is missing.

A beautiful rising broadway star Laura Graystone, is dragged into the heart of their investigation, and she’s none too happy about it. Especially when danger first strikes, and she needs to rely on her own ingenuity to save their hides.

Join Jax, Laura and Ace on a fun yet deadly ride during the Roaring Twenties that takes twists and turns, and a race against time to find the real murderer before he/she/they stop them permanently.

If you’re looking for a fun to read cozy mystery set in the 1920’s, I would recommend Songbird!

Five out of five stars!

Happy Reading!

Songbird surprised me in many ways, all of them good. An intriguing story with well-developed characters who grab hold of your interest, this was a mystery with a difference.

Meath weaves the various threads into an unforgettable tapestry that you're almost sorry to find reaching its conclusion. But only "almost" because you wouldn't have missed the denouement for anything.

A great read, a definite page-turner that I read in one sitting, I look forward to more in this series. I think you will too!

[I was fortunate to receive a pre-publication copy of the book from the author via NetGalley, with no obligation to review. The opinions expressed herein are given freely and are entirely my own.]

I was absolutely taken by this gorgeous book cover and I love the period of the twenties.
Laura Graystone is the songbird, rising quickly in the musical theatre. She has the opportunity of filling the limelight when the production’s leading lady is mysteriously murdered.

Jax Diamond is the PI, former detective, who is sure that the death of a playwright who has written a musical especially with Laura in mind dies with what looks like natural causes. Not.

The first book in the series, we are gradually introduced to their backgrounds and the twenties atmosphere of New York. Jax has a formidable looking GSD he named Ace and the dog figures prominently in the storyline. Jax is multi-talented and mysterious.

The author has tried to keep the authentic feeling of the period with both the speech (vernacular), and the sights and sounds of the prohibition era. There are subtle sub-plots and twists and turns that keeps the reader pursuing storyline justice.

The copy I received may have been an uncorrected proof as there were many edit misses. Otherwise, I found the storyline interesting, well-plotted and fast-paced, the characters well on their way to development, and the conclusion fitting.

I received a complimentary review copy of this book from the author and publisher through @NetGalley that in no way influenced this review. These are my honest thoughts. 3.5 stars

The story is set in 1920's New York and is the first book in the Jax Diamond series. There are several plots mingling together. The descriptions of New York along with the police and detective narrative of searching for a killer or killers is well depicted. I really enjoyed this book and I haven't read many pieces from this time period in history. Jax Diamond is a Private Detective and his partner is his German shepherd, Ace. When the man he has been hired to follow dies, things start to get interesting. Laura Gladstone is an up and coming Broadway star and she is mixed up in this mystery. Jax finds himself growing fond of Laura (and she also grows fond of him). The author did a wonderful job of painting a vivid picture of the setting and keeping me engaged throughout the novel.
