Love, loneliness, and longing are all aspects of life that come and go. This book is both poetic and tragic, which is just what we like. I'll be delighted to recommend this book to a wide range of folks who are looking for something fresh and attractive.

I just reviewed Baby Teeth by Meg Grehan. #BabyTeeth #NetGalley This was an....interesting book. Honestly I'm not sure how I felt about it? I felt like the MC was taking advantage of the girl she was in love with. I liked the side characters more, actually - I wanted to hear more about them. The poetry was fine. If you're looking for poetry that tells queer vampire stories, this is a good book for you.

Max

Thanks to the publisher for providing an eARC of Baby Teeth in exchange for an honest review.

I've been putting off reviewing this for weeks now because I truly do not understand the grip it had on me and was hoping it'd somehow pop into my brain but alas, brain still empty. Very weirdly uniquely wonderful book though.

I was gifted a copy of this from NetGalley and Little Island Books publishing in exchange for an honest review.

I don’t know how to begin this review in any other way besides saying you have to read this book! Meg Grehan wove a story of love, grief and self acknowledgement in a way that left me speechless for a matter of minutes after I finished.

I’ve never read a story in the form of verse before and at first it felt a little hard to keep up with but I pushed through and I’m glad I did because the plot was well worth the extra time it took to read it. Typically I’m a speed reader, going through books in one go without stopping but the story being written in verse forced me to slow down and truly take in what I was reading which made it that much more special.

Sapphic love, vampires, stunning imagery and an oddly nostalgic feeling put this book quite high on my list of recommendations. If you’re like me and are thrown off by reading verse I suggest sticking it out and trying to read it slowly, this isn’t a story I think anyone should miss out on simply because the format is daunting at first.

You know the stereotype about how lesbian relationships are so often about yearning and desire? This book captures that so well along with the tension between want and need, whether love is selfish or selfless, and what to do when we hurt the ones we purport to love. These questions are complicated by the fact that the narrator is a vampire. The verse in this book is simple and digestible yet deeply felt. I really enjoyed this book and cried at the end.

A lovely gay prose book, nothing else needs to be said but I must add some more. I can't wait to get a physical copy of this book eventually and I hope I forget everything about it so I can read it new again.

Unfortunately, this one just wasn't for me. I know it's written in prose, so I tried to go easy on the lack of plot development and vague details, but honestly I could barely follow it. It's a story in prose about a sapphic vampire, that's pretty much all I got from it. I read it all in one sitting but I honestly can't really tell you what I read.

I love prose, vampires, and sapphic stories so this was a memorizing mixture of the three I never expected to read!

Grehan’s take on vampires was fresh to me—with Immy truly struggling with her identify and her many past selves. Immy was a compelling character, Grehan’s trail or prose taking us from her inner feelings about herself to moments with her found family (Freddie and Henry) and her love story with Claudia. I loved the ideas of love being a mixture of taking and giving—and knowing when it’s too much.

Finally, Grehan’s prose was breathtaking. I admit I have never read a book fully written in prose. Her writing was sharp, quick and dreamy—kept me wanting to read. I especially loved the yellow rose repetition throughout the whole story. This was a captivating first introduction to the author and for the genre for me. Looking forward to reading more from the author🧛🏻‍♀️🖤

Thank you to Netgallery + the publisher for allowing me to read this book early by providing me with an ARC!

This was such a fresh take on vampire lore! This novel in verse brought a humanity (and a wish for humanity) to vampires that is often lost in much of vampire fiction. I loved just how much personality each of the three major vampire characters had and how much of their lives are intertwined with each other. They're not solitary creatures, instead choosing to live together in a coven-like family that connects this novel to the long line of other vampire fiction through the years. It's beautiful and heartbreaking in all the best ways with the poetic verses resembling much of the ramblings of a teenager trying to discover their own identity.

I cannot review this title as what seems to be available is a poorly formatted, single page PDF rather than a proper ebook file. The text is blurry and nearly impossible to make out. This was very disappointing as the premise sounded very good. Unfortunately, I'm forced to give it 1 star because of this.

I love books in verse, and when I saw this was sapphic I was immediately interested. It was a beautiful, beautiful story and I’m looking forward to read more from this author because her style of verse was just so pretty and really sad at the same time and that made me love it. Every element of it is just so aesthetic and nice and it’s one of my favorite books in verse.

Baby Teeth does wonderful work in poetic form, including elements of fantasy and a youthful voice, along with powerful imagery. Most enjoyable!

Verse novels are a recent favorite of mine since the pandemic hit and it's been harder to concentrate on longer-form prose stories. This one is no different. With deft, evocative verse, Grehan has crafted a story on what it means to be human through the perspective of a vampire main character. The characters all felt fully formed, and I only wish I could've stayed with them longer!

This is a great sapphic YA novel-in-verse with a twist: the protagonist and narrator is a vampire. The novel itself avoids most genre cliches and is quite deep and elegiac, and the relationship between the central pair is by turns joyful and bittersweet. I also loved the development of the found family of other vampires the main character lives with, despite the fact that the book's short length makes it hard to learn THAT much about them. Overall, this is a spare but shockingly effective emotional work, and I can't wait to dive into Grehan's other work.

I've never read an in-verse novel before, but after reading this I might look for more because I loved how this book was written. Baby Teeth follows a girl amidst an identity crisis when she meets a girl. The main character is a vampire, and has been alive in reincarnated bodies for centuries. She groups with two other vampires in every life, and has memories of the two boys, but none of herself. When she meets a girl who makes her stomach flutter, she has a lot of inner turmoil over her ability to love as somebody who she sees as a shell of a human being.

I thought this book was really raw, emotional, and intimate. At points I felt like I was intruding on what should be the narrators personal stream of consciousness. The relationship was complicated, beautiful, and arguably fated. I recommend this book for fans of We Are Okay by Nina Lacour; it has the same melancholia love.

I'm new to poetry, and even newer to novels in verse, and Baby Teeth was a great first step into the genre. Meg's writing is really beautiful and her characters even more so. The depiction of queer love and found family were a treat to read. I loved Immy and getting to read the world through her eyes, her care and love for those around her, and her trains of thought are what made me really fall into this book. I only wish it would have been longer, I want to keep up with these characters for a bit longer.

Thanks to NetGalley and Little Island for this ARC!

I really wanted to get into this since I am such an avid fan of poetry, but this wasn't smooth sailing for me. How it's written reminds me of a poetry slam, which was hard for me to read since I love grammar and punctuation so much.

This was more of a miss than a hit for me. The way it was written was good but I did find myself confused at times. It was also a very quick read.

So, I picked this up on a whim and it's become an unexpected favourite of mine. I love the author's writing style and the poetry's form. I liked how the whole collection of poetry told one collective story and the romance was really genuine. The author never had to spell anything out and yet everything was very clear. They also did a great job exploring what it means to be human through the vampire MC. Overall this was super good. I'd recommend it to fans of modern poetry who are maybe a little worn out of the typical poetry style popularized in the last few years by Rupi Kaur. This book is just as understandable and uses modern language, but has a really unique story and style.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC.
