What a whirlwind of an opening to this series! This is my first Susan Mae Warren book, and I loved it! I can't wait to read the remaining books in the trilogy! I highly recommend this book for lovers of mystery and adventure.

I'd read the first book in this series and loved it, so had to check out the other two. Both Sunrise and Sunburst were excellent reads with well crafted plots and dimensional characters. Susan May Warren has a gift for writing believable dialogue and describing settings with vivid detail and even though I don't always love rural fiction, I'm a convert to her work. Highly recommend.

Yes, yes, YES! another explosive series from the fabulous Susan May Warren! She has a way of transporting her readers to new and sometimes exotic locales, allowing us to hang out with the people who live inside her head and come to vivid life on the pages.

I may never make it to Alaska, but I definitely feel like I've been there after reading Sunrise!

Oh, you’re going to feel chilly reading this novel set in Northern Alaska, but you won’t feel bored!

I call Susan the queen of first lines. Check this out: “By the time Dodge got to the hospital, he’d already broken his first promise.” So good. Hooks you, doesn’t it?

We have SEALs; hot-headed heroes; strong, independent, survivor heroines. What’s not to love?

The hero had a falling-out with his father a long time ago. This makes for an awkward homecoming, but he faces it. Generally, he’s the type to go into denial, to dodge the truth. A fitting fatal flaw since his name is Dodge.

The heroine’s lie is that everyone you love leaves. That makes her doubt they ever loved her at all. She may feel her voice is an echo back from the expanse, without a response. Fitting since her name is Echo. She’s described as having put herself back together, following a betrayal, with anger. I’ve known people like that. They’re edgy and determined, gritting their way through—just the strength she needs to take on the Alaskan wilderness.

Susie uses symbolism throughout, like how tagging a bear teaches them they’re not quite free anymore, which could symbolize how people’s wounds/traumas rob our innocence too.

As a reader of Susie May’s novels, I liked seeing familiar characters peopling this one. It’s comforting, like visiting old friends. Her descriptions are layered and original. Like this: “The stars came out slowly, arching over the nightscape, the moon an eye, tracking her.” (location: 342 of the ARC) Or this: “A shard of compassion separated him from his frustration.” (location 1876 of the ARK)

There were a couple of melodramatic moments in the early copy I read, and some places lacked transitions, leading to confusion, but overall—a very compelling, well-written story with layered characters, prose, and plot.

This is book one in her Sky King Ranch series.

Highly recommended!

It took me several chapters to get into this. Once I got to know the main characters, I started liking it more. The Alaskan landscape was gorgeous to read about. I think the setting was the best part!

For me, the middle of the story was the best part. What tends to happen in suspense stories is the ending gets very drawn out and I find myself losing interest, which is kind of what happened. But in the middle I was super invested and had a good time reading.

The faith was good. The romance was nice. I liked the build up for the next book at the end as well.
I will be continuing this series!

Sunrise by Susan May Warren is the first book in her Sky King Ranch series. It follows Dodge Kingston and Echo Yazzie 10 years after a heartbreaking fallout that left them both hurt. Dodge has to return to the ranch after his father is in a plane accident and can no longer help the community with supply runs and rescues. As much as he doesn’t want to, Dodge knows that if he doesn’t take over then they will lose the ranch and all the consequences that follow are too much for his family. Echo is surprised to find out Dodge is back in Alaska and when she sees him again those old feelings start to creep back up.

Warren brings the Alaskan frontier and the harshness of its dangerous habitat to life in Sunrise. I’ve never been, but she has such a beautiful writing style that you feel immersed in the story as if you are living through it with Dodge, Echo and everyone else. I love the dual POV. You get to see both perspectives and Warren does a great job putting the reader in the head of the main characters which makes them more three-dimensional. You feel their frustration, pain, heartbreak, and every other emotion as if you are feeling it too. Dodge and Echo have not only the issues between each other, but also with their families. I like how their relationship developed slowly and it wasn’t rushed, which made the romance seem more realistic. The drama along with the danger really keeps you wondering what happens next! Warren does a wonderful job building the backstory of both of these characters that makes you really root for their well deserved happy ending.

This book has it all, a beautiful but dangerous setting, action, suspense and a heartwarming romance. Overall, Sunrise is a Christian romantic suspense novel with the underlying themes of forgiveness and hope for the future. This is the kind of book you savor one chapter at a time. There is lots to love in this book, and I can’t wait to read the rest of the series!

Dodge Kingston returns to his Alaskan home to care for his ailing father. It’s been ten long years since he left with a broken heart and a broken family. Echo Yazzie, the woman who turned down his proposal of marriage, has never left. She loves Alaska and the wilderness but it has wreaked havoc with her own family; her mother, unable to cope with the isolation, abandoned her and her father.
Susan May Warren has crafted an emotional romance in a majestic setting. She beautifully describes the Alaskan landscape and the creatures that inhabit it. I really enjoyed her descriptive narrative, which made this hot-weather Texas gal want to travel there myself!
More than just a romance, Warren explores family dynamics in both Dodge and Echo’s relationships with siblings and parents. There are themes of forgiveness, healing, and Christianity. The story also holds plenty of action and adventure to keep you on the edge of your seat.
I recommend this to readers who enjoy a wholesome, clean romance with plenty of action and thrills.

This clean Christian story was an awesome start to the brand new ‘Sky King Ranch” series!

It was set in Alaska with such descriptive imagery that I felt like I was there freezing and participating in events along with the characters. The story primarily followed Dodge, one of the triplets; along with his old girlfriend Echo who he had left behind in Alaska for the military.

I enjoyed the steady pace of the plot and getting to know Dodge and Echo’s families and the peaceful yet dangerous day-to-day life in Alaska. This book had some drama, clean romance, and some Jane Doe mystery towards the end of the book. The characters and storylines drew me in from the first page and I read it in one day because I could not stop reading.

I can’t wait to read more from this series which I hope will include other characters in the town and this family. I received a copy of this book complimentary for blog and social media review. All opinions are my own.

I keep trying Warren's books because the synopsis hooks me, but I keep ending up disapointed. I think Warren can write a great plot and even have some decent characters, but I can't get past the writing style or the frequent immaturity and unrealistic actions of the characters. Maybe these books just aren't for me.

A new series by Susan May Warren always excites me. I know I'm in for a riveting tale with engaging characters. Sunrise is the first installment of the Sky King Ranch series. It's set in Alaska so we know there's going to be plenty of adventure.

The main characters are the Kingston family. A widowed father, a set of triplets, Dodge, Ranger, Colt, and a sister Larke. The death of their beloved mother was hard on everyone but especially Dodge. Through the years he's become estranged from his family and has no plans to rectify that.

Of course God is very good at allowing circumstances to change our paths and that's what happens with Dodge. His father is in an accident and so Dodge finds himself coming home out of obligation to help his father. He has no intention of staying any longer than he has to and he has pre-planned to avoid everyone.

Poor Dodge! Small town life just doesn't work that way. People tend to get in your business whether you want them to or not. And that includes an old flame.

This book has a bit of everything. Adventure, mystery, suspense and of course a complicated romance. The story is primarily focused on Dodge but there's also a secondary story that I imagine will continue through the series. After finishing the first book I'm itching to dive into the second.

I really enjoyed this book! I believe this was my first book by Susan May Warren and I really like her writing style. There wasn't one time in the book where I didn't enjoy the read or felt like it was too slow. It was great....lots of action, friendships, romance. It had it all. PLUS it was set in beautiful Alaska, which was really nice! There was lots of depth to the characters, and I found them all to be very interesting. Including all of the dogs! Loved them! I recommend! 😉

This is the first book in a new series by Susan May Warren and it does not disappoint! I was engrossed in the storyline immediately and it didn't let up until the very end. A nicely paced story, lots of suspenseful moments and a little bit of romance involved as well. I look forward to reading the next book in the series.

I sat down with this book planning to read a couple of chapters just to get a feel for this new series by Susan May Warren. Hours later, Dodge Kingston and Echo Yazzie's story walked into my heart and had me pulling for their second-chance love.

Dodge Kingston fell in love with Echo when he was 10 and she was 9. His feelings for her never changed, only deepened but when, following graduation, he proposed to her, she turned him down flat. She feared making the same mistake her parents had made, marrying too young. She then went to a graduation afterparty where alcohol flowed, and was found in the arms of the wrong Kingston triplet. The fight that ensued sent one brother to the hospital and Dodge to jail. She hasn't seen Dodge since, but has always felt guilty for destroying the Kingston family bond.

When Dodge is called back home to run Sky King Ranch and the supply service to rural Alaska, he's only there until his dad is cleared to fly again. He wants nothing to do with Echo or his Dad, feeling that both had betrayed him. When he is called upon to rescue Echo following a grizzly attack, he flies in weather he shouldn't be going up in to save the woman he has always loved. Arriving, he discovers Echo is unhurt but one of her dogs has been badly mauled. As they are thrown together repeatedly, they discover that their feelings aren't quite as dead as they thought they were. When it becomes apparent that Echo is in the crosshairs of poachers that she keeps thwarting, can Dodge keep her alive long enough to offer his forgiveness for their past?

This book made me want to fly to Alaska to see its wild beauty for myself, but I'm pretty sure I'd be one of those clueless tourists. I loved how Warren portrays Dodge as strong but broken-hearted on several fronts. I also appreciated Echo's backstory, and the brokenness she has never been able to overcome. Their second-chance love story rings all the more true for all the details Warren includes in their story.

Readers who enjoyed Warren's Montana Fire stories will enjoy this new spin-off series.. (Big sister Larke Kingston's story is told in book 7, Some Like it Hot.) There is lots of action for the adventure lovers, plenty of suspense for those who enjoy nail-biters, and a lovely second-chance love story (actually a couple of those....) As always, Warren hit this one out of the park. I highly recommend!

Powerful!

Amazing start to this new series! Susan May Warren always brings great characters, and I love all of the different connections between her other book series. This was such a beautiful story of overcoming heartache from the past, and finding forgiveness.

I can't wait to continue following the Kingston triplets on amazing adventures in the next two books of this series. Susan May Warren is always on my 'Must Read' list!

Love books that pit man against nature? Want characters with a rich background and conflict that makes them three dimensional and real? Then you will love Susan May Warren's latest novel sunrise. Set in Alaska, I felt like I was living there with the characters, and I deeply wanted Echo and Dodge to find their way back to each other even as all the odds were against them. A satsifying read.

Sunrise is the first explosive volume in a new nail-biting series from USA Today bestselling author Susan May Warren. It is a classic second chance romance, with a thrilling adventure set amidst spectacular scenery.

"Pilot Dodge Kingston has always been the heir to Sky King Ranch. But after a terrible family fight, he left to become a pararescue jumper. A decade later, he heads home to the destiny that awaits him.”
“That’s not all that’s waiting for Dodge. His childhood best friend and former flame, Echo Yazzie, is a true Alaskan–a homesteader, dogsledder, and research guide for the DNR. Most of all, she’s living a life Dodge knows could get her killed. One of these days she’s going to get lost in the woods again, and his worst fear is that he won’t be there to find her. ” (From back cover)

I loved this story. The main hero in the story is one of the handsome Kingston brothers. I look forward to reading more about the others in the following stories in Susan May Warren’s new set, The Sky King Ranch series. The heroine, Echo Yazzi, has never got over her childhood crush for Dodge, but has he got over her?

If you enjoy romantic adventures with a clean read, you will enjoy reading Sunrise. If you haven’t read any of Susan May Warren’s books, this is a good time to join, by reading the first of this brand new series.

"I love heroes who love deeply! Dodge was exactly that kind of hero. He has loved Echo from the time they were teenagers and will never stop!

Sunrise was filled with the action, mystery, and a little of the suspense I’ve come to expect from Susan May Warren. I really enjoyed seeing Alaska through her eyes – it really came to life. Seeing the lives of the homesteaders, awed by the Aurora Borealis, catching my breath in fear as the characters encountered grizzlies, flying through the snow behind the dog sled… What an adventure!!

I loved the detailed description of Dodge flying the plane. And how he attempted so valiantly to not crash when the fuel pump failed. That was so amazing. I think my heart stopped for a beat or two during that part. And when the bullets were flying. And when the grizzly attacked. And when… (not recommended for the faint of heart!)

One of the things I’ve always appreciated about this author is the profound way she makes God such a significant part of her stories. Dodge’s father was such a great picture of solid faith amid storms. His persistent and loving reminders to Dodge and Echo of God’s character were spot on.

Readers who enjoy suspense filled with romance and faith will want to read this exciting first book of the Sky King Ranch series! I’m eagerly awaiting the release of Sunburst in June 2022!

I was given a copy of this book. I was not required to give a favorable review nor was any money received for this review. All comments and opinions are my own."

You really can just never go wrong with Susan May Warren. HOW DOES SHE DO IT?! I'm praying all of her books stay in the same world forever, because I LOVE getting to see old friends and settings when we read each new release.
And really, Warren has a knack for great and compelling characters. All a little flawed, but you can't help but love them anyway. They simply come to life right off of the page. Then she plops them into gorgeous scenery and you can't help but be invested in the story of a lifetime.
Sunrise kept me at the edge of my seat, and I'm so grateful all of these books will release in 2022. This story was high stakes from the beginning. Dodge, the broken hero that you just keep rooting for. Echo, the tough girl heroine that can do anything, but soon finds she can't do it alone. I couldn't put it down and finished in less than 24 hours. I'm already counting down the days to June 1st and Book 2!
