I found this book fascinating! The characters, the plot and the gothic feel all came together.

It’s a dual story of Victoria, the young married nurse and her husband, Adam and young Sylvia.
Their stories intertwine when Sylvia is hired to be a companion and caretaker to Victoria.
Victoria has suffered a traumatic brain injury and semi paralysis six months previously. Her story is revealed in her diary, which Slyvia finds and reads. The diary opens her eyes to the type of mental abuse Victoria suffered from Adam.
This story would be very triggering for a reader with abuse in their past. It does accomplish being a fascinating read. I would classify it as a psychological mystery with a very gothic setting.
It honestly scared me and I think it would make a great movie.
Thank you NetGalley and Bookoutre for this chance to read. Loved the story !

I enjoyed listening to this book while I was busy doing things around the house and while driving. It kept my interest the entire time without ever spacing out! I did however find it fairly predictable and I kept hoping throughout the whole thing that I didn’t have it figured out.

Verity? Wow. It’s like I was reading Verity all over again. I can’t stress enough how similar the plot line is. Normally and admittedly, at first I was completely turned off by this. BUT I will say I soo enjoyed this. So much so that as the story went on the similarities didn’t bother me at all.

First, the narrator was amazing! She had so much emotion and enthusiasm in her voice. Too often I listen to books & the narrators are so monotone & I have to DNF.

Again, I can’t stress enough how entertaining this story was. Plot twist after plot twist. Loved it! Dare I say… I enjoyed this better than Verity! I enjoyed the writing style more I think. Don’t come for me!

10/10 highly recommend

What a ride! This was one of those thrillers where the twists and turns and even the final outcome are somewhat expected, but the adventure to get there is the point and the draw for the book. McFadden wrote Sylvie is such a way that you feel like you are right alongside her trying to figure out what the heck is going on in this isolated house. This did have some of those "what are you doing???? do you not see the red flags???" moments as you process through things both from Sylvie's point of view and from Vickie's, so if that is something that you don't enjoy, you may want to steer clear. For me, though, these moments just increased my compelling need to keep going in the story since it seemed like the shoe could drop at any moment.

⭐⭐⭐.5/5

• engaging and lively narrator
• loved getting in Victoria's mind through the diary entries
• suspicious characters

This one was pretty fun and kept me guessing although somewhat fell flat in the end. After I finished the book, I learned that the author is actually a physician specializing in brain injuries... which will make a lot of sense when you read the book.

🗣️ Thank you to NetGalley, Dreamscape Media and Freida McFadden for the opportunity to read and review this book via audiobook. All opinions are honest and my own.

3.5 (?) stars

This was a quick, fairly light story. I enjoyed it, but it did have some clichés that are common to the genre. Some of the character representation felt a little bit off, but I don’t know; maybe that was just me. A couple of the plot points didn’t seem to fully add up. The last part was great, with several twists and turns. The very ending (absolute last scene/moment) was ridiculous and largely unnecessary. This writer wouldn’t necessarily be one of my top choices for a good thriller, but I didn’t mind it and will keep her in mind for the future, if and when I’m in the right mood for another of her books.

I really enjoyed this book. Very similar plot to another book but still enough differences that I kept going back and forth with who was lying and it definitely held my interest! Would definitely recommend. Thank you NetGalley for this ARC!

I really like how the book started. The narrator was excellent which pulled me into the story. The problem for me was the ending was predictable. I'm not usually good at guessing the twists but this one was a bit obvious. It's very similar to Verity.

This was a 4-star read going into the ending...

A beautiful home, a troubled marriage, a terrible accident, and dark secrets....

First off, I thought the narrator did a fantastic job.! Hats off to her! Both she and the story sucked me in from the very beginning. Sylvia Robinson saves a woman's life in a restaurant and in the process is hired to work for Adam Barnett, a bestselling author who needs help with her disabled wife, Victoria. It sounds like a dream come true - living in a beautiful home, being paid more than she had ever been paid before, and naturally, Adam is incredibly handsome. There doesn't seem to be a downside, so Sylvia packs her bags and moves in.

Then Victoria (Vickie) gives Sylvia (Sylvie) her diary. As she reads more of the diary each day, Sylvia begins to question, to look at her actions, and become concerned. Plus, Adam is so handsome that her panties fly off and you can guess the rest...

As I mentioned, this book started very strong for me. I was hooked and kept trying to make time to listen. I also wanted to yell at every woman in this book and at the author for writing women to be so ridiculous. But then what irritated me was what sucked me in as well. I wanted to know if anyone would smarten up. So many times, I was shaking my head and thinking for the love of all that is holy....

This book was entertaining and kept me engaged until the end when I threw my hands in the air and thought "Oh, come on" I would have been happier if the book ended with a scene close to the end. The very last section brought it down for me. Many will like how it ended, I just couldn't go there. Sat shaking my head.

Plus, if you are reading or listening to this book, it will give you vibes to other books with similar themes.

Three stars for the book. Five stars for the narrator.

This had me hooked from the first chapter.

Imagine getting ready to go to a job interview, stopping for coffee before and having saved someone life blow up in your face. This is what happened to Sylvia. Although she did not get thank you she expected from the lady she saved, she did end up with coffee all over her ruining her change at the bartending interview. However, her luck turned around when a handsome man, Adam, offers her a job just keeping his wife company and being her friend. Of course with the salary and benefits offer Sylvia could not turned the opportunity down. She backs what little she has and moves into his home. Once she starts the wife, Victoria, who has a brain injury from an accident starts trying to talk to her and warn her about her husband. So, who does Sylvia believe? The wife, with a brain injury an a very detailed diary of what exactly took place their entire relationship? Or the husband, who is so sweet, kind and caring to both Victoria an Sylvia?

The ending of this book was full of twist. Once I thought I had it figured out and the next it completely changed.
It kept me on the edge making me not to want to put it down.

Thank you NetGalley for the ARC.

3 stars for me

A nice, rich, good looking man that is looking for someone to take care of his injured wife. He find this broke, lonely girl who take the job and moves in the isolated, middle of nowhere mansion.

When the brain damaged wife starts to communicate with the new girl, things get complicated.

The story is quite predictable and it feels like the same book or the same plot has been written a few times before by others.

I liked the writing, the book is funny and somehow suspenseful.

Thank you Netgalley and Dreamscape Media for allowing me to read this book!

Victoria is married to a handsome loving husband and has everything she wants. She believes she is in a wonderfully perfect marriage, but then she has a terrible accident. She can't talk, walk, feed herself.
Her husband hires Sylvia to take care of her and keep her company while he works. As Sylvia works there she has been reading Victoria's diary to learn more about her and has been shocked and surprised to learn that things are not as they seem.
This book was very fun to listen to. It was enjoyable exciting and enthralling as well. There were a lot of surprises that I wasn't expecting which made it an exciting read.

When I first started this book, I found the main character infuriating. I also found the plot line similar to Colleen Hoover’s Verity. I almost did not finish it, but I’m glad I kept going.

Although similar, I think there’s enough differences in this book from Verity that it stands on its own. I ended up enjoying it in the end. This plot is twisted and I was not expecting all the twists in the end. The audiobook was well done and made for easy listening.

Much thanks to Netgalley and the author for the opportunity to listen to this book in exchange for an honest review.

I liked it. A well done audio version although the similarities to another popular book were a little exhaustive (which also goes back to the land of Jane Eyre). Characters were well developed and the story moved along at a solid quick pace. I really liked that.

This is definitely worth the listen for fans of psychological thrillers.

I hated Verity by Colleen Hoover. Had I known the similarities I would never have picked it up on audio; glad I did. Dark, tense, fast-paced. The last twist brought the story full circle and was utterly satisfying. The narrator was a solid selection.

This was fantastic! I finished it in one setting. Who was the real bad guy? I just reviewed The Wife Upstairs by Freida McFadden. #TheWifeUpstairs #NetGalley

This is classified as an adult Mystery & Thriller; in my opinion this is a Young Adult thriller. I had a really difficult time liking Sylvia. Once I saw this as a YA book, she was more palatable. The premise of the story is intriguing, and there are points that made me shiver. The ending, I listened to the last chapter twice, was satisfying and felt appropriate.

There is profanity, and frankly there was one spot only that it would have been acceptable. The other areas were awkward as if the author felt the need to add F and GD profanities.

I liked the story and the narrator, Angie Kane did an amazing job.

The Wife Upstairs grabbed my attention from the very beginning. It was an easy binge read with short chapters and lots of suspense. I loved the different POV changes between Victoria’s diary and Sylvia. The narration was great! If you loved Colleen Hoover’s Verity, then you’ll enjoy this book!
