While this is a part of a series and some prior characters play a part of this one, you don't have to read them to fully understand this story.

I adored this story. There were some really wonderful scenes (especially those with Medusa a/k/a Melissa - you will have to read the book to understand.)

Alasdair, is a Scottish warrior who comes to London to get land that was stolen from his clan and given to their neighbors returned back to them now that the clan is in good standing. He second mission is keep an eye on his younger sister, Fiona, and his brother's sister-in-law, Lorelei. The second task is proving a little more difficult. The girls could really care less about the Season and finding a husband and more about an adventure.

While this is a romance, there is adventure and intrigue as well. The book is well written with a brawny Scot (who doesn't love a Scot especially if they show up at a ball in Highland regalia! Swoon!)

The book is written in my favorite dual POV format. Actually there are other characters that have their POV as well. This increases the intrigue and mystery. If you adore historical romance with a touch of intrigue with interesting characters of strong will, you will love this one.

3.5/5 - Highland Champion by Cynthia Breeding, book three in her Children of the Mist series, is a very slow burn romance between Lorelei and Alisdair. Lorelei Caldwell is excited for her first season in London. For the next few months, she and her best friend, her sister in law Fiona, can indulge in balls, flirting, and enjoying the delights of London society without any family interference; this season is for adventure, not marriage. But their adventures are short-lived with the arrival of Fiona’s brawny, dark-haired Highlander brother, Alasdair MacGregor, who insists on being their chaperone. Officially, Alisdair is in London to re-acquire land that rightfully belongs to his family. While there he might as well as keep an eye out for his sister and the woman he has feelings for. Unofficially, he’s there to figure out how best to win Lorelei’s hand in marriage. But London proves to be full of complication, especially when she begins matchmaking him with someone else. Except Lorelei’s plans do not go as she had planned and finds herself wanting Alasdair’s attentions for herself. Her longing for freedom could come at a high price, unless Alasdair can save her reputation; without destroying her independent heart.

This is a slow burn romance in which Alasdair and Lorelei both want each other, having fallen for each other while in Scotland; forgetting to communicate or share their feelings. Misunderstandings, manipulations, clan loyalty all play their part. I enjoyed both Alasdair & Lorelei but while they might be perfect for each other their romance was very much on the back burner for most of the book.

This was my first novel by Cynthia Breeding, and the world she pulled together was amazing. I've read a lot of Ton novels and the imagery was colorful and inviting which I really enjoyed. I also learned that this is the 3rd novel in her Children of the Mist Series.

This novel is what you'd call a slow burn. We have Lorelei and Fiona who are in town planning to have the best season of their lives. And throughout the novel we get to see that. They travel from party to party enjoying the heck out of their season. Honestly the novel was mostly about them, their friendship and their enjoyment, which was fun to read.

However, there was also Alasdair who has been in love with Lorelei for a long time now - a woman he shared a kiss with(apparently in a previous novel). When they come together in this book, it's fun and enjoyable but unfortunately it feels almost like a side story to the main one with the girls.

It's a fine read, but definitely not my normal interest. I'm all for bringing the couple back and forth together to create angst and surprise moments, but it was almost too few here. I focused on the girls and relegated the romance to a secondary story. But maybe that was the "romance" the author wanted to convey - that almost sisterly bond.

My opinion is my own and freely given.

Lorelei Caldwell is thrilled as she is well on her way with her best friend and latest sister by marriage Fiona MacGregor. They are well on their way to their first season in London and Fiona is also thrilled that non of her overprotective and nosy brothers are acting as chaperones. They were planning all kinds of fun activities, as Lorelei and Fiona just want to dance, flirt a little and have fun. Yet neither one of them wanted a husband!

Yet this fantasy of freedom from annoying family member is short lived when the arrival of Fiona’s brother Alasadair arrives as their babysitter that some might call escort or chaperone. This totally killed the girls plans! Little do they know know that Alasdair has ulterior motives that has nothing to do with clan business. The problem is that London is full of difficulties and stumbling blocks he didn’t plan on, furthermore he has to figure a way to maneuver these issues to receive his hearts true desire.

Of course Alasdair MacGregor has helped Lorelei out in a couple tight awkward situations she wasn’t going to mention . What they did not know is that Alasdair wanted to reclaim some lands that belong to his clan, but his biggest reason he came was he wants to marry Lorelei Caldwell! He was not going to let any other man have a chance to steal his lass away from him! Yet the worse thing happens as the lass of his dreams is trying to talk him into courting another woman which totally breaks his heart! Now Lorelei is also regretting her actions and she is finding she now want this gorgeous Highlander all for herself . What was she to do as she put him in another woman’s path! Yet something happens because of Lorelei’s reckless yearning for freedom which could totally ruin and put her reputation in pieces. Will Alasdair save the day and become her !e
knight in shining armor. Read and find out.

This is the third book in Cynthia Breeding’s Children of the Most series. I have loved this entire series which I highly recommend but you can read asa stand alone book too. It’s a Scottish regency romance which is a fun read and watching how the main character both make many mistakes wondering if they will ever accomplish a happily ever after? Read and find out what future is in store for Lorelei and Alasadair!

This is the third book in the Children of Mist Series. We have previously met the main characters in the first two books.

Lorelei and Fiona are in London to experience their first season. They are happy ladies going from party to party, dancing the night away, and looking for suitors. That is until Alasdair, Fiona’s older brother and Lorelei’s brother-in-law, arrives in London. His main purpose in London is to approach Parlament and try to gain ownership of his family lands and establish his family on them. But he is also tasked with keeping the young ladies from trouble and sneakily continuing his pursuit of Lorelei.

This is a slow-burn romance. The first 3/4s of the book is about the London scene, the parties, and the interactions with other members of the Ton. When the two main characters are together, they are not alone. So it was difficult for me to get a sense of their romantic relationship or where they were heading. I felt there was more chemistry between Lorelei and Fiona than with Alasdair. I would have liked for him to take charge of his romantic interest and forget about the proper behaviors of society. The romance starts to make an appearance towards the end of the book when Lorelei starts to experience moments of jealousy and makes a claim on Alasdair.

I didn’t hate it, but I didn’t love it. I had been waiting for Alasdair and Lorelei’s story since the first book in the series when they shared that stolen kiss and was established that they would be a romantic duo in the upcoming books. Overall, it was 4 stars because I liked the description of the London scene and I love Fiona.

Miss Lorelei Caldwell has arrived in London with her best friend to enjoy their first season. They are determined to make it an adventure. Our heroine is maybe a little reckless in some of the adventures she wants.

Highlander Alasdair MacGregor has officially been sent to London to sort out a land dispute. Really he wants to keep an eye on his sister and her friend. He knows just how much mischief those two can get up to.

Our hero finds that females have a way of thwarting the best plans.

This is a historical romance with a handsome highlander finding his way through London's high society.

There is danger and intrigue to watch for, and lovely characters to meet. Not everyone is how they seem.

This is part of a series that surrounds the family but each book can easily be read on it's own.

Good fun.

This is the first book by Cynthia Breeding that I have read. I don't feel that you need to have read any of the previous books in her Children of the Mist series to read this book. I wish I could say that I loved this book and I had thought I would from the description, but it was just lacking everything I crave in a historical romance.

I had a hard time getting into the book and it is incredibly slow-paced. The writing is weighed down with mundane details that neither furthered the plot nor enhanced any of the characters. I understand the importance of historical details, but they seemed to be trivial details. I wish I could say that I liked the heroine, but Lorelei came off as flat. I could care less what happened to her and Alasdair, which is not a good sign. Their romance came off as surface level and it was beyond a slow burn. If anything there wasn't even a flicker of chemistry between the two.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an ARC of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own. Thank you to Netgalley and Entangled Publishing for the ARC of this book.

I could not get into this one at all. Really bummed about it because the synopsis sounded really promising. Too many characters thrown at you at the start and continued to be done so as you get further. This was contant dialogue so it just felt like a huge conversation and I was feeling nauseous reading it because of the constance of it. No explanation of who characters were and the different inflections of wording used felt inauthentic when you had the same word spelled three different ways in one sentence by the same character.

This is the third book in the series & is easily read on its own. A slow burn romance both Alasdair & Lorelei want each other & had fallen for each other whilst in Scotland but again a case of if only they’d talked & shown their feelings. Misunderstandings, manipulations, clan loyalty all play their part. I loved both Alasdair & Lorelei but whilst they were perfect for each other their romance was very much on the back burner for most of the book. A well written book with humour & some action, it also introduces us to new characters & we start to get to know more of the MacGregor siblings. I look forward to more in the series
My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read

If you love a good slow-burn with plenty of adventure then this one is for you. It is part of a series and can be read as a standalone.

Lorelei Caldwell and Fiona MacGregor are in London for their first season. They have plans to enjoy the balls, flirting, and visiting different areas of London without any family meddling. Their plan is to enjoy a few adventures, not for marriage necessarily. Their plans for adventures are in jeopardy when Fiona's brother, Alasdair MacGregor arrives in London.

Officially Alasdair is in London to reclaim the lands that belong to his clan. Unofficially to keep an eye on his sister and Lorelei. He wants to figure out how to approach Lorelei so that they can court and be married.

But those plans are interrupted when her sister and Lorelei encourage him to spend time when another lady. But seeing him spend time with this lady is starting to bother Lorelei. And she left to wonder why she ever agreed to this plan.

Another exciting chapter for the children of the mist. Alasdair is in London to negotiate to redeem his clan’s lands and holdings. He is also there to subtly watch over his sister and the woman he is in love with. Lorelei is happy to be back in London without the interference of her two older sisters. She is looking forward to the opportunity to have fun and enjoy the season. All of that is in jeopardy once Alasdair shows up. The Scots take over London for the season and create excitement and scandal. They are a feisty and determined bunch who know how to get exactly what they want. There are so many great characters in the story to watch that will make for great stories down the road. A wonderful and exciting book.

This is my first book by the author and the premise seemed interesting so I was excited to give it a try! I believe it is a standalone but I do feel like I was missing some things that I probably could’ve understood better had I read the two that came before it.

I like Lorelei and her adventurous spirit and I love Alasdair and how he kind of seemed to be pining for her more than the other way around, but he was still willing to let her have the independence she wanted. However, their story is very, very, slow burn and I could understand if there just weren’t any steamy scenes making it slow burn, but in this case they were barely in the same room together, much less conversing together, throughout most of the book.

I feel like this book is a little more about the day to day life of a girl in her first season, rather than a romance between Lorelei and Alasdair. All that being said, this book takes place at an interesting time (the start of the Revolutionary War) and it had some laughable moments, a little steam, and some suspense!

Third book in a series but works as a standalone. Historical romance centered around pre-Revolutionary War London. I don't often see the English side of this era represented in historical romance, so that made this book unique.

Lorilei wants to enjoy a London season and have unchaperoned adventures with her friend, Fiona, in areas of London that no lady should be. Alastair is charged to recover lands the MacGregors have lost to the Campbells, but also wants to court Lorilei and keep his sister out of trouble.

Well-written, but the plot and characters are weak and loosely cohesive. They went to parties. They went on foolish adventures. He wants to regain his clan's properties. He wants to pursue Lorilei. Enter bad guy. Enter manipulative debutante and attentive spurned suitor.

I have read the second book in this series but not the first, now I want to go back and read the first one.

Right away you should know this book is slow burn, but in a way where the same kind of situations happen over and over again. The female characters are wonderfully done and are strong and independent as one can be during that time. I enjoyed how Alasdair was there for family business but he wasn't about to lose the chance to finally make Lorelei his. I didn't really enjoy them plotting to have Alasdair be with another woman during the season, normally I don't mind this spin but Lady Melissa just rubbed me wrong. This book is the third in the series and I will continue to read the series as it goes on. I am hoping for a Fiona and Gavin book maybe ... or to know much more about Louisa.

I was given this book through NetGalley for my honest review.

This is the third book in The Children of the Mist series’. This one was slow to start. Way to many balls and parties and no action.

I am hooked on this series - I will have to go back and read the other books in this series. Lorelei Caldwell is in desperate need of some adventure and freedom. she decides to part take in the England season - she isn't looking to get married she wants to see new things experience new things.
Alasdair knows what he wants and that is Lorelei, he wants to make her his wife but he also wants her to experience her freedom

This was a cute story of protectiveness and love. I enjoyed the characters, the supporting characters and the storyline direction.
I would have liked for Alasdair and Lorelei to have gotten together sooner however the drama that occurred was also entertaining

As other readers have said, this is a very slow burn romance and 3/4 of the book is about balls, soirees and parties with hardly any interaction between the two main characters! I've read quite a few of Cynthia Breeding's books and have really enjoyed them but this one just didn't get my interest whatsoever. Chapter after chapter just seemed to be the same thing over and over again and it wasn't until almost the end that at least a little action occurred.

I received an ARC of this book via NetGalley and I am leaving an honest review.

Highland Champion is a slow burn romance between Lorelei and Alistair. In the previous two books in this series we saw two of Loreleis sisters marry Alistairs brothers and have their happily ever. Lorelei is on her way to London with her sister in law Fiona to have a season. They want to go to to balls and have lots of fun exploring all the places young ladies arent normally allowed to go. They are hoping that without all the brothers around they will be able to have some fun... Well until Alistair shows up in London to figure out a way to get his family land back... and maybe keep an eye out on his sister and the woman he has feelings for.

Most of the action doesn't happen until the last half of the book.. Once we get past that things pick up very quickly. We get more action, and romance.. along with a sort of mistaken proposal to the wrong person.. I really enjoyed the second half of the book, and can't wait to read more in this series.. Im hoping Fiona gets her HEA next!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Highland Champion is the third book in the Children Of The Mist series, which focuses on the MacGregor and Caldwell families. Lorelei Caldwell’s two sisters have found love with the MacGregor brothers. Lorelei is drawn to Alasdair MacGregor but flees with Alasdair’s sister to London to enjoy the season and the freedom from her family. Alasdair finds himself in London trying to navigate land disputes and wooing Lorelei simultaneously. All does not go well for Alasdair.

Lorelei craves independence but is naïve in matters of her safety. There is a battle of wills between Lorelei and Alasdair throughout the entirety of the book. After much subterfuge, the two must weather the storm of scandal to find their happily ever after. Alasdair finds himself in impossible situations time and time again. Alasdair is honorable and understands his duty to his clan.

Both characters are rich and multi-faceted. The couple’s scenes together are fiery. I would have liked more scenes with the two of them together. There were times where the couple circled each other too much. When together, Alasdair and Lorelei’s connection was electric and passionate. I enjoyed all the secondary characters; they were all well developed. The background descriptions were vivid.

This is a slow-burn novel. There is much posturing and misdirection, yet the story flows well, if at a slower pace. The last fifty percent of the book moved much faster, and all of the action occurred here. I thought the ending was enjoyable and fulfilling. I would have liked more insight into Alasdair and Lorelei’s future, but I guess we will be seeing more of them in future novels.

All in all, this was an intriguing book that kept my interest. I like my romance novels to move at a faster pace. However, the plot always had depth, and the writing was beautiful. Cynthia Breeding has created another excellent book that pulls at your heartstrings. Highland Champion is full of spirit and romance. Another superb addition to an enchanting series.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advance copy of this book through Netgalley and the publisher. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

NEITHER PLOT, ROMANCE NOR CHARACTERS COULD SAVE THIS BOOK...

I was completely underwhelmed by this book. There wasn't really anything to hold my attention and I found my thoughts drifting often.

👎 What I Disliked 👎

Pace: It took sooooo long for this book ti actually get going. I think it wasn't until the 3/4 mark that the pace really started to pick up and build towards something. The first 3 quarters were just plain dead. Nothing of any interest or import really happened, and it just felt stalled and slow.

Plot: The plot was thin, to say the least. It dragged out (same as the pace) and went round and round in circles for far too long. It felt as if the same things were happening over and over again, with both Lorelei and Alasdair repeating themselves continuously, spouting the same fears and misgivings about each other. It got boring real fast.

Romance: Honestly, I didn't feel a lick of romance or chemistry between Lorelei and Alasdair. Perhaps because they hardly ever had any scenes together! To top it off, whenever they did have a scene, they were not alone! So there was no chance to actually feel them falling for each other or being attracted to one another. It was a big letdown in a romance novel, not to have to romantic character interact at all.

Characters: And on the subject of characters... I was not impressed. Lorelei and Alasdair, in particular, were sort of drab. Fiona had some spunk, I'll give her that. But when the two main character are weak, the book cannot be carried by a single side character.
