This is the fifth book in the Detective Casey White series and another explosive instalment. This one is personal for Casey, she is called to the scene of a murder only to discover the dead body is that of her ex-husband. Another gripping thrilling ride, fast paced absolute must read, will Casey finally get some answers about her missing daughter? Can’t wait for the next instalment.

Police procedural featuring Detective Casey White, part of a series. Good characters and an exciting story with plenty to keep the reader guessing.

Thank you to Bookouture via Netgalley for providing this e-ARC in exchange for my honest review.

This is the fifth book of Detective Casey White Series. It's as much as better as the others in the series. This series gets better with every single book. This is a police procedural / murder mystery. There is a lot of danger for our heroine and those around her. The story will keep you on the edge of your seat from the first to last page. This crime thriller is also about family and friends about seeking to discover what happened in the end. The character interactions make them all seem so real and that ending is so absolutely full of the feels. This is part of an ongoing series set around this detective. I will certainly be reading the others. I’m looking forward to Casey’s next adventure both professionally and personally. It deserves ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐. Highly recommend.

This is the fifth book in a series which I read as a standalone. A clever title and a clever plot line. Detective Casey White is called to a crime scene where an unidentified male has undergone a horrific death. When she realises it is her ex husband her world is turned upside down and a personal tragedy haunts the case. Excellent.

Hold the top 5 list for 2021 !!

The Memory Bones is book 5 of the series, have I read the other book? No. Do I feel like I was missing vital parts to the series? No, little things were filled in along the way.

Mr Spangler certainty knows how to set a scene, even without us actually being there! The salt, the heat, the flies and to some extent the smell 🤢. The detail in which the crime scenes were written really had me feeling part of the story, some points a little too much….. I’ve never held my breath as much while reading a book.

I adore our main character, Casey. Even though I’ve only read the one book I felt like she had lived some harrowing times, and if this book is anything to go by I can’t wait to see what I’ve been missing. I liked how she interacted with her team, guiding them, letting them take the lead and showing them how to get the job done instead of taking over everything. I especially liked Nichelle for multiple reasons (read the book!).

The Memory Bones is action packed with plenty of dark corners that set your mind racing, it’s definitely one to have at the top of your TBR list!!

I have a confession to make. The killings in this book got into my dreams. I won’t say nightmares, because that’s a bit dramatic, but they certainly got into my head.

A choice, a quick death with a bullet in the head.

Or, play the game, take the challenge, escape the knots and run away.

3 years ago a woman is given the choice, she doesn’t know why she’s been taken into a clearing in a wooded area, or who the two men who took her are, all she knows is the bullet will kill her, and escaping being tied up and left alone at least gives her a chance.

Today a man’s body is found hog-tied in a clearing. Two discoveries get Detective Casey White’s attention.

One, the discovery nearby of skeletal remains intertwined with rope and a similar set of knots.

The other, the latest victim is her ex-husband Ronald Haskin, the father of their missing daughter. A man she still has emotional attachment to, but has not been in contact with for a while.

All that in the first thirty pages.

Not a bad read, Quick, shorter and a good Crime Fiction series. If you really like Crime Fiction you will like the Casey White Series.

I am new to this series but will be catching up quickly. I thought the suspense was well woven throughout the book and kept me turning pages. I did figure out the plot fairly quickly and knew "who did it" about 3/4 of the way through, but it did not ruin the book. I did not care for the ending at all. I thought it was really cheesy and cliche, but that is just me.

BLOG TOUR REVIEW

Review for 'The Memory Bones' by B.R Spangler

Read and reviewed via NetGalley for Bookouture publishers, B.R Spangler and Bookouture anonymous

Publication date 2nd December 2021.

This is the second book that I have read by this author. It is also the fifth book in the 'Detective Casey White' series but can be read as a standalone. I have read the second book in this series 'The Innocent Girls' which I would recommend.

I was originally drawn to this book by its gorgeous cover, interesting title & intriguing blurb. I am also a fan of BR Spangler and if this book is half as good as 'The Innocent Girls' it is bound to be a great read. The synopsis stated that 'Fans of Karin Slaughter, Lisa Gardner and Robert Dugoni will be completely addicted '. I love Karin Slaughter and Lisa Gardner's books so it will be interesting to see if it lives up to this!! I must admit I was also biased due to the publisher being Bookouture. I have yet to read a book published by Bookouture that I haven't enjoyed. Hopefully this won't be the first... Watch this space! (Written before I started reading the book).

This novel consists of a prologue and 33 chapters which are short to medium in length so ideal to read 'just one more chapter' before bed...OK, I know yeah right, but still just in case!

THE main protagonist in this book is Detective Casey White where she 'speaks' in first person dialogue . I always enjoy reading books written in first person more as it feels like I'm sitting across the table from them while they are telling their story or in the book next to them. We also read about others in different chapters in third person perspective.

This book is set in the USA 🇺🇸.

The way this book is written and the fantastic descriptions made me feel like I was right next Casey and going through the events with her.

The storyline is intriguing with the children being spared and invites being sent. There is also the side storyline of Casey trying to find her daughter throughout the book. I felt like I was on a roller-coaster when reading this with there being many ups, some slower parts and twists and turns throughout. I'm pleased to say I was completely surprised by who the perp so a huge congratulations to BR Spangler as it is getting harder and harder to surprise me as I've read so many crime books. However, although I did love the ending but because I read so many crime books I must say that I didn't think what happened was very realistic as I'm sure that what happened would have been revealed a long time a go when a certain person joined the force and submitted DNA. I'm also unsure on the likelihood of Casey being able to work the particular case due to being so personal to her. I don't want to say anymore than that as I don't want to spoil it for future readers. However, this is just on my research and I may be wrong. I still quite enjoyed the story and the main part with the Killers came as a surprise.

Although this is the fifth book in the series I had absolutely no problems reading it without the others. Any details or events that have previously happened are mentioned in just the right amount of detail to let a new reader know what has happened and yet not too much to bore a previous reader.

I loved the broad range of characters and the fact that Casey is a strong female lead is definitely a bonus, being female myself I love crime novels with strong women. The characters were all realistic and their parts were 'played' well. I enjoyed meeting them again and look forward to meeting them again in the future although I'm quite sad that we won't hear much from two members of the team I'm very pleased for them, again I won't say more as not to spoil this for future readers.

This book can be read as a standalone but for a better picture where Casey's daughter and Ronald is concerned I would recommend reading the first book prior to this one.

The story was more of a slow burner although at times picking up, much of the action I found really kicked off at about 65% and got much more interesting. I also feel the cover complimented the story really well, this can be a downfall if it doesn't and the cover has no relevance with the book itself.

Overall a good slow burner that really hits full throttle further in and becomes filled with suspense, action and tension.

Genres covered include Suspense, Mystery, Romance, Thriller, , Hardboiled, Police procedural, Psychological thriller, Crime fiction and Noir fiction.

I would recommend this book to fans of the above and anyone who enjoys a unique storyline.

327 pages.

This book is £1.99 to purchase on kindle via Amazon which I think is a very good price for this book!!!

Rated 4/5 (I enjoyed it ) on Goodreads, Instagram, Amazon UK and Amazon US and on over 30 Facebook pages plus my blog on Facebook.

A body found in a marsh area turns out to be Detective Casey Whites ex-husband Ron. In search for her husbands killer, she finds out that Ron also never gave up on finding their daughter, who was kidnapped 15 years ago. All leads turn towards Rourke Hospital. Will Casey and her team find her ex’s killer, and will she find out what happened to their daughter, ….
This is book 5 and the first I read in the series, I was able to pick up and read no problem.

OMG! This book had me going all over the place! There were moments when I realized I was holding my breath! I couldn't put the book down! The twists and turns added lots of drama and action! The story caught my attention from the beginning and wouldn't let go!

What a great thrill ride! I had to keep telling myself to breathe in and breathe out! This is definitely a must-read! Engrossing! Action-packed!

Quite a difficult read to begin with but I soon got engrossed in what became a fascinating story line with so many twists and twists and turns.2 murderes using th the same rather gruesome way to kill and then the emergence of another plot with a surprising end a very good read

Finding the body of her ex-husband is not the only shocking thing that Detective Casey White discovers. Finding pictures of their long ago kidnapped daughter Hannah pasted all over his walls was almost too much to bear. When additional bones are discovered near his body, Casey is absolutely sure they are tied to the disappearance of their daughter. But how?

Casey strives to dig deeply into the connection of the discoveries, even though such a personal connection is no doubt a conflict of interest. However, the pain of loss regarding Hannah never leaves her and she plows ahead. With her lover Jericho by her side, Casey is determined to find answers, despite the danger that is certain to find its way to her. Indeed, things become quite hairy as Casey and Jericho soon find their lives literally almost snuffed away by a consuming fire, thus proving that Casey is getting too close to discovering what happened to Hannah - and as it turns out, possibly other babies.

What a thrilling story and an excellent addition to a compelling series! The previous book, The Crying House, left me wondering if Casey was getting closer to finding out what happened to Hannah. This book, The Memory Bones, carries that idea even further, and proves that Casey's doggedness never ever lets go, no matter how close to losing everything could happen. This story was captivating from the very start and kept me tapping my Kindle to see if this chapter in Casey's life would come to a close. I truly love this series and cannot wait to see what other exciting cases that she has in store to solve.

Many thanks to Bookouture and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.

About The Memory Bones: Looking down at the familiar, pale and lifeless face floating in the salty waters of the marsh, her blood freezes. It’s a face she hasn’t seen for years, but used to know so well…

When Detective Casey White is called to a murder scene in the Outer Banks saltmarshes, she’s devastated to find the strangled body of her ex-husband—father of her missing daughter Hannah. And nearby, an older, unidentifiable body is buried too… but how are these bones linked to her ex?

Painful memories flood back as Casey desperately searches his apartment, surrounded by photos of them happy with their little girl. Finding a notepad with the name of the hospital where Hannah was last seen scrawled on it, Casey realizes her ex recently discovered something about their child’s disappearance. But who was trying to silence him?

Then forensics show the bones belong to a sweet young nurse who worked at the same hospital. Delving into hospital records, Casey is shocked to learn she once held Hannah as a little baby…

Her boss insists she can’t work such a personal investigation, but Casey is in too deep. Interviewing all the staff at the hospital, she’s sure one of the doctors is acting suspiciously… and that night, Casey wakes up barely able to breathe as flames devour her home.

Now she’s in the killer’s sights. To finally catch this twisted monster and learn what happened to her stolen girl, Casey will have to risk everything…

An absolutely unputdownable thriller that will have you gasping at the twists and turns. Fans of Karin Slaughter, Lisa Gardner and Robert Dugoni will be completely addicted.

My Thoughts: I enjoyed this fifth book, The Memory Bones as much as the others in the series. Casey White is a great detective, being a determined, smart, and compassionate woman, though she carries emotional baggage. The other characters are also well created and developed, especially ex-sheriff, trustworthy and amiable Jericho Flynn. Casey and the team's interactions were interesting to read as they set about looking for the culprit(s) and I always enjoy a bit of Jericho. Set in Outer Banks, North Carolina the plot pacing was frenetic with plenty of action, and there was certainly no room for tedium or boredom. The story was fascinating and I revelled in the problematical investigation. Enthralling to the very end, I shall be watching out for the next in the series and I'm immensely keen to see where the talented B.R. Spangler takes things next. A highly entertaining and absorbing police procedural which I recommend without any hesitation.

Disclosure: Thank you to Bookouture via Netgalley for providing a digital ARC of The Memory Bones by B.R. Spangler for review. All opinions expressed in this review are my own.

Such a superb series, one I highly recommend
With detectives and a team that now feel like friends.
This is the fifth book in this series and I say
If you haven't already done so, read the first four without delay!

What a dramatic read, right from the start,
And with an ending that pulls on the strings of your heart.
A very different and moving, emotional discovery
That leads to unexpected, loving recovery.

When the body is found in the marshy Outer Bank
Detective Casey White looked and her heart sank.
The victim is her ex husband and he's been killed
And discovering nearby skeletal remains leaves her chilled.

All the clues suggest her ex-husband was on the track
To discover what happened to their child fifteen years back.
He must have been getting close to finding the truth and so
Someone decided he must go.

As the team piece together the various clues
The killer obviously thinks they've nothing to lose
Get ready for a fire, as the killer has her in his sights
Maybe she'll discover what happened that dreadful night?

Such a moving story of loss and grief
Finding what happened would be a relief
But hidden away where the truth is concealed
There's peril and more danger as secrets are revealed.

This crime thriller is also about family and friends
About seeking to discover what happened in the end.
The character interactions make them all seem so real
And that ending is so absolutely full of the feels.

For my complementary copy of this book, I say thank you,
I throughly enjoyed reading it and this is my honest review.

This is book 5 in the Casey White series and I advise reading them in order. The latest story finds Casey investigating a suspicious death which turns out to be her ex husband. What was he doing in the outer Banks so far from home? I love the characterisation and the twists but this was an emotional ride for Casey and her team. I am struggling to avoid spoilers so will just say, enjoy this tense read. Thanks to Net Galley for my ARC.
