Absolutely hilarious, heart felt and honest.

This book will take you on a journey of parenthood, travel and finding your place within a community.

Saoirse is moving her life to New York for a year as her husband has landed an amazing job. It would be the trip of a lifetime if it didn’t involve moving their five year old daughter away from her school, friends snd family.

I love how throughout the book the bond between Saoirse and her husband David stays strong. The book explores mental health in a real and honest way. It also explores the struggles of trying to fit in a new place as an adult.

This book will pair perfectly with a nice cup of tea and a biscuit or five!

I’ve not read the previous book by Murray and there were occasional references to it, but in general this can be read as a stand alone novel it took me a while to warm to Saiorse the main character- in London she felt a bit wishy washy and in NYC she just seemed a bit needy!! It was nice to see her strength of character develop as she found her feet in Westmont.
There were some fairly far fetched elements to the story- such as when her two besties suddenly appear and whisk her away for a no expenses barred weekend- but maybe I am just envious that wouldn’t happen to me!
If I could be picky I didn’t love the ending with the wedding bits- didn’t feel hugely related to the rest of the story. But I’d be interested to know whether they choose to return to England or not. David and Saiorse’s relationship was lovely and Anna seemed really sweet. Overall an easy and light read.

Saoirse, David and Anna are going to live in New York a year for David's job. Saoirse is excited but nervous at the time and thinks everything will be fine.
As with all good stories it's anything but fine when they arrive and find they are in a 1 bedroom flat with no washing machine, Anna's new school isn't the one they were expecting which was close to the flat but on the other side of the city, it's swelteringly hot and David has to travel with work so is away for days at a time, then she gets mugged
Can Saoirse keep going or can they find an alternative solution to make everyone happy ?

Winging It by Emma Murray reunites readers with the immensely relatable Saoirse and her young daughter Anna. Although her circumstances this time around are vastly different from my own, I find that these novels resonate with me and are immensely readable, almost like having an intimate conversation with an old friend.

Saoirse is up for a new adventure when husband David delivers the news that he has an opportunity to relocate to New York for a new job. But the initial excitement soon turns to wary apprehension as the realities of big city life with a five year old, in the heat of summer, soon begin to present themselves. Will Saoirse find her tribe, and create for her family her own ideal, albeit temporarily, of the American dream?

Emma Murray's novels are a breath of fresh air, and I hope that we will find out what comes next for Saoirse and her family and friends.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Boldwood Books for an ARC.

Making It, Or Not, New York…
Can Saoirse make it in New York? At the very least, she’ll be wingin it. When her husband is offered a job in New York she’s utterly delighted and keen to up sticks. The reality, however, comes as rather a blow. Will her plan for winging it reap rewards? Amusing, lighthearted and easy read for some joyous escapism.

Not for me. I couldn't wing it, this book.

I made it up until 28% but didn't warm to the main character, and then with her friends popping up for a surprise visit all the way to NY (an expensive trip, I would say) it didn't sound real to me. But decided to give it another go, only to find out a few pages later that someone came up with a clifftop location for a wedding on a platter.

Either very privileged or very convenient...
