Rating: Enjoyed It, 3.5 stars rounded to 4

This was a really fun mystery read. I have found that I really enjoy mystery/thrillers, but I tend to enjoy them the most if there is some sort of twist that sets them apart from the pack. This is the first in a new series that follows Felicity Harland, a former FBI agent turned Investigative Services Branch agent. They are responsible for the crimes in the National Parks. I genuinely didn't know that this was a thing, but I loved it.

I felt like the backdrop of the parks gave this an element that not a lot of other mysteries have, and I found that fascinating. I thought that the author did a good job of setting the scene and making it believable. I thought that the two characters we followed were decently well-written. There's Felicity Harland, the ISB agent who has experienced trauma while out hiking in the Australian Outback, and Ferdinand "Hux" Huxley, the former Navy SEAL turned Park Ranger with a strong interest in investigation. They had nice, easy banter and were an enjoyable partnership to follow.

I think that a couple of things that bothered me: it felt like there was some plot armor around Hux as a character. He was a great "finder" but where he got those skills or the process that he used was never discussed. He just found things like needles in haystacks. There was a couple of mentions of his past as a Navy SEAL being where he got these skills, but it honestly just felt like plot armor for convenience at times. My other issue was with the way the actual mystery was handled. I feel like it is probably possible to pick up some clues and figure it out, but I just felt vaguely discontented at the end. I don't know what it was, but it just wasn't super satisfying. I can't really say why though. I think I got annoyed when it was setting it up to look like it was a person who has a disability and i never really shook that? Unsure.

But overall, I think it was a fun read and something that nature enthusiasts would probably enjoy.

Thank you to NetGalley and Dreamscape Media for an advance copy of the audiobook for review in exchange for an honest review. Disclaimer: I had difficulty downloading the audiobook and it didn't end up working ever, so I waited for a copy to be available in my library system, but there were no audiobook copies. However, this is a fast paced story that I think would lend itself to audio very well.

Thanks to #NetGalley.and #dreamscapemedia for a copy of this book in audiobook form for reviewing purposes .
I really liked this book, the first I have read from Claire Kells. It has just the right amount of outdoor adventure, intriguing clues, chilling plot, likeable main characters both human and canine, and an assortment of suspects that need to be sorted through by our team.

I cannot wait for the next book by this author featuring this team of investigators, especially Felicity as the determined investigator and Huxley as her trusted partner. Their witty banter was so refreshing . She had me hooked from the get go!

Great setting and characters in this book. Liked the Felicity and Hux dynamic and would like to listen/read more books featuring this crime solving duo. Ollie was fun as was the setting and all the outdoorsy references. Interesting take on glamping and locals. Enjoyed the narration and was a compelling listen.

A federal agent investigates the disappearance of an actress who was on a glamping trip in Sequoia National Park, assisted by a park ranger who is a former Navy SEAL.. This book blends the beauty of nature with mystery. It was interesting to see how they unravel this complex puzzle, given the rugged environment. Long hikes are a big part of this story. The characters, especially the secondary ones, are quite unique and add interest to the story. At times, there seems to be some confusion around availability of technology in the wilderness. For example, the agent is out in the wilderness, yet receives an email from one of the suspects with an attachment. That doesn't seem to agree with their need to use a sat phone while in the same location. But, overall, the story line held my interest and it was an enjoyable listen.

Felicity has started her new job as an agent with the Investigative Services Bureau. She will now investigate crimes in National Parks. And her first crime is an unexplained fall…or is it murder!

I enjoyed Felicity. She is strong and smart, plus she is damaged. She has a terrible injury from her past and a huge loss. So, she is struggling to do her best on this case. Enter Hux! He knows how to handle just about any situation and be super nice about it!

Now, I figured out the killer pretty early in the story. But the author has a good many twists and turns that I did second guess myself a couple of times. I also loved the setting of Sequoia National Park. I do not think I have read a book in this setting and now I want to go! Add in Hux…he is kind of captivating…and you have a pretty dang good read!

Natalie Naudus is the narrator. She does and excellent job. Perfect inflection, especially with some of the male voices.

Need a good murder mystery in a fabulous setting…THIS IS IT! Grab your copy today.

Felicity Harland is a newly minted federal agent with the Investigative Services Bureau, responsible for tackling crimes that occur on National Park lands. As a former FBI agent, Felicity has great crime solving skills, but a personal tragedy has weakened both her resolve and her body. When a park ranger discovers an abandoned exclusive campsite with an empty tent and high-end gear scattered on the shores of an alpine lake in Sequoia National Park, Felicity gets teamed with Ferdinand Huxley. A former Navy SEAL with skills in finding people, will Hux help Felicity to solve the crime?

Natalie Naudus does a good job narrating the story, giving voice to a woman with grit and determination. I appreciate how the author has given Felicity skills and inner strength. Having read many books in this genre, I really like how the story is about the disappearance without any romance between the two main characters. Mystery thrillers with a strong investigative component are among my favorite reads, but they often get spoiled by a romance taking place when there is clearly no time for it. Although I did anticipate the ending, I still enjoyed the journey the author took through the Sequoia National Park.

Felicity Harland, a federal agent with the Investigative Services Bureau, is called to Sequoia National Park to investigate the disappearance of a camper from an exclusive "glamping" campsite--an investigation that leads to the possibility of murder. Struggling to find a lead, Harland is paired up with ex-Navy SEAL Ferdinand Huxley, taking her through the wilderness and the streets of Los Angeles in search of clues.

Harland and Huxley's dynamic is charming, with playful digs at each other balancing teamwork and professionalism. The book is full of other intriguing characters and vivid depictions of a national park in the dead of winter. At times feeling like a federal procedural and others a wilderness mystery, there is enough tension to drive the story, and banter to keep the slower spots moving. Without spoilers, the book reaches a satisfying conclusion and sets up a potential series. I'm looking forward to seeing what happens next for Harland and Hux.

Thank you to Crooked Lane and Netgalley for the chance to read and review.

Excellent narration. The narrator changes her voice to indicate the different characters. Some people don’t like that but I find it helpful to keep track of where I am in a storyline and find the performance more enjoyable.

I found myself intrigued by the characters and scenery. I readily admit I’m not an outdoorsy person but I found the description to be detailed without being overdone. I loved that when I had general thoughts about what Felicity should do or have done it was addressed in the narrative. I didn’t find it to be predictable and think that the puzzling pieces. I also liked that there was connection between Felicity and Hux but the story didn’t take a turn and move from being a mystery/thriller into an all out romance.

Special thanks to #DreamscapeMedia #VanishingEdge #NetGalley for the opportunity to listen to an advanced copy of this audio book.

Vanishing Edge

Narrated by Natalie Naudus

Thank you NetGalley and publisher for this audiobook for an honest review.

Claire Kells is a new author to me, but I absolutely loved listening to the audiobook Vanishing Edge. The book was so well written and paired with a gifted narrator that made the perfect combination to give a “movie-like” experience.

Felicity Harland is a former FBI agent who due to injury is taking on a new role with the Investigative Services of the National Parks. Ferdinand Huxley, an ex-Navy Seal is also tackling a different job as Park Ranger. Their paths cross when a camper goes missing and they are assigned to partner up to unravel the mystery.

While the plot on paper may seem like something you have read before, this is NOT your cookie cutter adventure, suspense novel. The banter between Harland and Huxley was so much fun and made me break out into a big grin every time they were together. Throw in the dog Ollie into the mix and awwww…There was such a deep connection between the two main characters. I’m not talking insta-love either, even if there was a flicker of the possibility of their relationship going beyond friendship. Hux and “Boss” just really treated each other with full respect and had a solid foundation of trust. And the way they encouraged each other just added to the overall dynamics between them as partners and friends.

If you are looking for an “on the edge of your seat” reading/listening with brilliant scenery and twists and turns, and mystery, and suspense mixed with humor and strong character building and…this book is for you! Highly recommend!! And my fingers are crossed that this is the start of a series…hint, hint Claire Kells!

I am writing this review as it is snowing outside my window but I am toasty warm inside but when I was listening to this one I was right there in the Sierra Mountains with Felicity Harland, former FBI special agent, and Ferdinand Huxley, Hux, as they climbed the trails along with Harland's dog, Ollie, to find out what happened to two missing glampers. I felt every ache and pain with Harland whose spine is being held together with more steel rods and pins than actual bone at this point after a horrific accident that cost her everything, her husband and her job, and by some miracle she is walking and it it nothing but fortitude that has her putting one foot in front of the other to climb. Hux is right there with her and as a former Navy SEAL he has his own demons but as a "Finder" he is the best at his job. This one kept me guessing whodonit right to the end. I really hope this author brings back these two for a series. Their banter was priceless and fresh and kept the story moving. Definitely a recommendation from me.

4 mysteriously entertaining stars

Thirty-two-year-old Felicity Harland—a former FBI agent who left the service after a personal tragedy is brought in as chief investigator for an abandoned campsite at Sequoia National Park. A body is found, a body is missing. She teems up with a Hux, a former Navy SEAL, recently turned park ranger.

Mysteries are supposed to surprise and Vanishing Edge certainly did. I did not see the ending coming. I particularly relished hearing the backstories of both Felicity Harland and Ferdinand Huxley. The banter between Harland and Hux was highly entertaining. Other intriguing characters range from movie star to crusty park supervisor to loving husband to backwoods father and sons eking out a living. The setting of Sequoia National Park was rugged, even deadly. I hope this is just the first in a series!

I thoroughly enjoyed listening to Vanishing Edge, finishing in two days. The easy-to-listen-to narrator’s voice was clear with good inflections and pacing. Naudus’ voice fit the young Harland well.

Felicity Harland is a federal agent for the Investigative Services Bureau, the agency that investigates crimes in National Parks. During her first week on the job, she gets a call from Hux, a park ranger that has found an abandoned campsite in an isolated area of Sequoia National Park and the luxury camping service that set up the “glamping” vacation won’t reveal any details about the missing clients. Though the campsite shows no signs of struggle, the case takes a turn when a body is found at a nearby lake. Was it an accident or a murder?

Narrator, Natalie Naudus, does a fantastic job bringing this book to life and made it feel like I was listening to a movie. The story has many twists and turns and the rugged descriptions of the mountains and lakes made me really feel like I was with them on the search. Out of curiosity, I ended up googling some of the locations and author Claire Kells did a stellar job in her descriptions. I really loved the working relationship between Felicity & Hux. The middle dragged a bit, but overall a great storyline, interesting characters with an ending that I didn’t see coming at all. A classic who dunnit and I look forward to reading more in the series!

Review ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Main character is called to investigate a suspicious abounded camp site. The site was set up by a company that does glamorous camping set ups. Will they find the campers alive or not and who and what is responsible for their sudden disappearance.

I found this story to be suspenseful as well as relaxing to read. It has the small aspects of suspense but white plenty of logical conclusions, making the story that much more relatable. I was pleasantly surprised by the ending. A very good read for those who like suspense without the gore.

Gripping! Yes, as cliche as it sounds, it is truly gripping. Right off the bat, Vanishing Edge by Claire Kells starts with an interesting premise and strong voice. Claire Kells writes main character Felicity Harland very well and narrator Natalie Naudus brings her to life in this audiobook. I was immediately captivated by the story - both Felicity Harlands back story but also the case she goes to Sequoia National Park to investigate as a federal agent with the National Parks Investigative Services Bureau. Claire Kells sets the stage well for the mystery of what happened out in Sequoia National Park and who Felicity meets along the way; especially who she gets to work with on this case! Kells also sets the stage for a series and I really can't wait for the next installment! 4 stars.

Vanishing Edge by Claire Kells.
Narrator, Natalie Naudus
Good beginning to a new series about a female investigator and her dog. There were some things that seemed pretty unlikely, including the ending but I still thought it was pretty good. One complaint was that she was too easily cowed by her boss, other agents and random others. This seems hard to understand since she was an FBi agent for several years before she took this job with an investigative arm of the National Park Service. Also hard to believe she got this job with a severe back injury. Even so, I would read another book in this series. I’m sure the main character will mature as will the writing. Loved the dog and the cute, funny ranger guy.
Narration was excellent.
