I think this was a really smart, well crafted cli-fi novella. It was definitely a softer, more character driven sci-fi (think in the vein of Becky Chambers but more melancholy).

Set post climate disaster and collapse of civilization, Reid lives in a community that repurposed what was formerly a university and only the oldest members of the community remember what life was like before when humans had electricity, etc. Also theres a mysterious fungus disease called Cad that has invaded humanity and both Reid and her mother have the disease/parasite.

At the start of the novella Reid has just been accepted to Howse University and the story follows her as she struggles to decide whether to leave her mother and her community to go to Howse or not.

I would hesitate to give this as as a general SFF recommendation as there is very little action or exploration of the speculative elements, but I think this would be perfect for fans of literary SFF or anyone who likes stories that focus on community.

Pretty underwhelming unfortunately. It feels like this post-apocalyptic Edmonton had a lot of potential but it just wasn't explored thoroughly enough.

A beautiful climate-fiction/science-fiction novella with strong crossover appeal and well-developed characters in a tiny, impactful package. Reminiscent of survivalist media like STATION ELEVEN and THE LAST OF US. Really enjoyable!

A smart, character driven sci fi novella. Written in a way I think lit-fic fans will also enjoy this. This was a lovely introduction to this author, hope to read some more long work from them. Definitly would be carefull if you can't handle animal cruelty. It fits the story, but it's there.
