Whilst giving useful insight into almost every possible facet of life, I think this book would be more useful to a US autist, and someone on the middle to higher support-needs (but still able to live independently) end of the spectrum. Some amendments have been made for the UK market but, there were still whole sections ie 'how to get into politics', which were skewed to the US.
Thank you to the publishers and Netgalley for the read.

This is a great bible to keep close if you are autistic. It explains how to deal with major things happening in your life from self care, to relationships or moving into your first home. It's written to the reader so feels like a friend advising you on how to approach life!!.
Netgalley provided me with a free arc book for an honest review.

Much needed and informational, although sometimes it felt like too much and I wasn't taking it all in. I do have a daughter with disabilities and wanted (and still want) to read more about how to let her be more independent and how to help her find herself. Although I do think this helped a bit, I still found that it is hard (no fault of the book) to categorize Autism since it is such a broad spectrum and as such what might work for some might not work (or might even be detrimental) to others. I did think the book tried very hard to be a good resource.

A great and inspiring book. This book not only feels like it helps ease the complexity of things that other people find easy but it also makes you feel like your not alone. This is definitely a book I would recommend to others.

I am not fully sure what the expected use of this book is meant to be--it definitely isn't something to just sit down and read straight through (i just did it, so feel like i can say that definitively). I think to be useful, there would have to be some quick way to remember to go back to it when you needed the particular , and to find what you are looking for. It might make more sense as a podcast, or a website? The information in it is good, but the actual usefulness feels limited.

Excellent ! Insightful ,engaging ,.
Very interesting perspective one that you don't often see.
(This would be more for U.S.A market i think.)

What does it mean to become independent when you are neurodiverse? Haley Moss uses her experiences and advice from professionals to give her take on moving on from teens to adulthood when you are neurodiverse. She talks about everything from self care, taking out the rubbish, having emergency numbers on hand to navigating employment, jury duty, voting, and so on. There are so many useful tips, as well as just having a first hand experience point of view. My neurodiverse teen loves to hear about other neurodiverse persons and their experiences as inspiration and encouragement. I have preordered the hardback as this will be one of those books, he just keeps coming back to. On the final section: Sending You Out Into the World, Moss explains: "Independence is the freedom to be your full, wonderful, autistic self" and that "all we can do is to have the strength and vulnerability to acknowledge when we need help". These are perfect words to help navigate the world- be yourself and ask for help when needed. Definitely essential reading for any neurodiverse teen ready to navigate a path to independence and their support team helping them achieve it. #theyoungautistadultsindependencehandbook #haleymoss #netgalley #neurodiverseteen #seeking independence #autism #neurodiverseyoungadult #independence

I'm thrilled to see a comprehensive, own-voices guide to independent living for autistic adults. The guide itself is detailed and useful, covering everything from cleaning schedules to budgeting to dating to registering to vote and it approaches the concept of independent living in a broad, non-judgmental away, acknowledging that it could mean different things to different people.

There were a couple pieces of advice I wasn't sure about (questioning a host about what food will be served at a party is a trickier conversation than the author implies, for example) but this is a great place to start. There are a lot of interesting thoughts about autistic identity and ableism that are valuable reading for anyone. I would strongly encourage anyone who is autistic or is close to/has regular contact with people who are autistic to give this a read!

Many thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review!

I absolutely LOVE that this book’s title isn’t embarrassing. (Others I’ve seen in the past were downright cringe-worthy!) Readers will feel that they’re being talked to by an adult, for adults – which is exactly what a neurodivergent teen transitioning into adulthood needs.

In particular, the chapters on dating and job preparation were encouraging and insightful!

I’ll be adding this book to my library's YA Non-Fiction collection.

Thanks Netgalley and Jessica Kingsley Publishers for this ARC in exchange for my honest review!
