Thought provoking and well written.
Many thanks to Secant Publishing LLC and to NetGalley for providing me with a galley in exchange for my honest opinion.

This novel has a very solid premise, and I was excited to read it. Unfortunately, it did not live up to my expectations. The language is cumbersome, with a mixture of old English, Scottish, and Colonial dialects. There are many passages that are meant to illustrate a character's mindset, only instead adding to the chaos of the language. The story is told in sections by three different characters, which only adds to the difficulty. I found myself struggling to enjoy this story. I admire the author for telling the story of Colonial women from different lenses, but it just wasn't enjoyable to me. The ending felt rushed and anti-climatic.

TRIGGER: The book does depict violence of slaves

It started a little slow at first, but once the action happened I was HOOKED! A telling of hope, desperation, a battle of the classes and a fight for survival. I absolutely love the perspective being from the slaves point of view. You feel their excitement, their fear and are sitting on the edge of your seat each time they are in trouble (which happens quite a bit). 5/5 great read.
