I’m a sucker for time travel books and was excited to dive into this one. I enjoyed the early 2000s nostalgia that came up along the way and the overall premise of the story was a good one. The book was enjoyable throughout and although the main character wasn’t the most likable, she did grow on me throughout the novel. I liked the little unexpected ways the story moved along but overall I just felt there was something missing. I can’t put my finger on what it is, but it didn’t quite hold up to other time travel reminiscent novels I’ve loved like oona out of order, the midnight library and before I fall. An enjoyable read but not one I’d revisit.

I want to thank everyone for this gifted copy of The Girl I was by Jeneva Rose.

Did I love it? No. Did I hate it? Also no. It wasn't the best book I've every read. I felt like there were a lot of things in this book that I enjoyed, but that more seems to fall flat, which was disappointing.

Listen, I love Jeneva Rose, so let that be my disclaimer. My biggest complaint was that I had a hard time suspending my disbelief. There was one particular scene with the main character’s brother that simply ✨would not end✨ and I was actually getting angry. But the other thing I found irritating is so minor and yet felt like a lazy detail-oversight. So part of the story takes place in 2002 and they go to a party where people are quoting Shots Shots Shots by LMFAO. Now, I went to college from 2008-2012 and remember that being a big song when I was in college. I was like, wait a minute when did this song come out? It came out in 2009. So you’re telling me these frat boys in 2002 are quoting a song seven years in the making? I think not.
So really, I’d recommend passing on this book. But Jeneva is hilarious on TikTok and I have enjoyed some of her other books so please pick up others!

THE STORY was very enjoyable in the beginning and the plot went downhill from the middle to the end which was disappointing to me and this hurt me :((((

This was such a good book, and I feel it’s better enjoyed on audio! You will fly through this book. The characters are great and the plot is meaningful. If you’re looking for a book to fly through, this is the one! I highly recommend it!

I was really looking forward to listening to the audiobook of The Girl I Was by Jeneva Rose. The first few chapters were enjoyable and funny but sadly the story went downhill from there. The main characters were annoying and unlikeable and too be honest it was torturous listening to all the bickering going on between the two main characters. I know my opinion goes against the many fabulous reviews but for me, this audio book was a big no.

Thank you so much to NetGalley and Dreamscape media for my audio arc in exchange for my honest review.

This was such a fun and quick audiobook. I really like the way this author told this story. I do believe I would’ve enjoyed it better if I read it physically, but it was still really interesting! This author definitely knows how to grab someone’s attention from the beginning! Great thriller!

This story has a good premise but took me awhile to get into the story. I enjoyed the second half of the book much more than the beginning, felt like a 13 going on 30 type vibe

I really enjoyed this one. I loved the message it sends and how the author was able to write an interesting story that captured my attention while still staying true to what she was trying to get through to the reader.

I absolutely loved The Perfect Marriage by Jeneva Rose. I was really interested in this contemporary story by her as it is a different genre than her first. Turns out, it was a really good story and I enjoyed listening to the audio version. The actions in the book were thought provoking and really made me think hard about the topics it addressed. This was a fun read and I can't wait to see what Jeneva Rose writes in the future!

This is Jeneva Rose's 2nd book and is nothing at all like her first book, which she totally admits. I liked this book more than I thought I would, which is always a nice shock. Obs, you can read the blurb so I am not going to restate it here. For most of the book, I found Lexi to be annoying and rude, which is means Jeneva did a great job writing her b/c that was the whole point. I really enjoyed the maturing and character development of both Lexi and Alexis. The fact that Alexis also has things to learn as well came as a huge shock to her, which was a poignant lesson for all of us. The fact that the book has a happy ending always makes me super pleased!

Once again I am firm in my belief that I will read any book that Jeneva Rose writes. I do love that she is able to write such an awesome and twisty thriller and then move on to another type of book so seamlessly. Can't wait for her next book!!

I loved the concept of this story! If you are a millennial and looking for something that has early 00's nostalgia this book is perfect! I did struggle with the audio version as I did not care for the narrator. I ended up reading it on Kindle Unlimited.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for a copy in exchange for an honest review.

My first book by this author, I look forward to more by her! I alternated by listening to this audiobook and reading on Kindle Unlimited, and for whatever reason I enjoyed reading it more than listening.

This is a light read that gives total 13 going on 30 vibes. I love the message that this sends to us all and found it the perfect read after so many dark thrillers on my shelf!

3.5
THE GIRL I WAS by Jeneva Rose is an epic throwback and homage to the early 2000s and an overall ok read with some stand out moments.

THE GIRL I WAS tells the story of Alexis. In 2019, Alexis is in her 30s, immature, a little lost and her life is not what she imagined it would be. She gets sloshed one night and passes out and wakes up in 2002 — at university with her 18 year old self who she blames for the current of her life and who she tries to fix.

This story reminded me of all the great music of that era. I especially love the multiple mentions of Sean Paul. The Juicy Couture movement of that era should stay there and never come back!

The whole part at the parents house during Thanksgiving was beautiful and funny. The writing here felt different than the writing in the first half and I fell in love with this portion.

Favourite quote: "Shots! Shots! Shots! Shots!"

Thanks to NetGalley and Jeneva Rose for the opportunity to listen to an advanced copy of the audiobook.

I loved the concept of this story however, struggled to enjoy the tone of the narrator. If you are looking for something that is injected with early 00's nostalgia this book fits the bill perfectly. For fans of Jeneva Rose's book The Perfect Marriage, recommend going into this one semi-blind. It's super different!

✨BOOK REVIEW AND HAPPY PUB DAY!✨

4.5 rounded up to 5. Wow. I loved The Perfect Marriage and was skeptical about The Girl I Was, but Jeneva blew it out of the park! I can see how this book would be a tearjerker for sure. Throughout the whole book I was reflecting on my own life and how different choices brought me to where I am today. My only “complaint” is that I wanted more. I loved the character development and wanted to keep seeing it unfold. But with that being said it was an amazing book. The narrator was amazing too! She really brought Alexis and Lexi to life which added to the experience. I highly recommend the audio once it is available later this month! Now I just need to get my hands on a physical copy😍

If you’re a fan of the movie 13 Going On 30 or have always wondered what it would be like to talk to your younger self, then I believe you’ll enjoy this book!

Thank you @netgalley , @dreamscape_media , and @jenevaroseauthor for my ALC in exchange for an honest review! Pub date 11/16/21 for physical and 11/30/21 for audio.

Oh wow. I was no expecting this book to hit me as hard as it did. I loved the audiobook version of it. I was hooked right from the very beginning of this book. The only other book I’ve read by this other so far is The Perfect Marriage which I loved so much but this book is very very different from The Perfect Marriage but I love both of them equally! This book had me sobbing. I highly recommend it!

❤️REVIEW: Oh college… I think it’s safe to say the girl I was is a wild child. Just like Lexi, I struggled to maintain a balance of fun and academics. This book brought me back! I adored the way @jenevaroseauthor created characters that were so so so real! And holy range of emotion!! I laughed, cried and was rooting for Lexi and Alexis the whole time. I also wanted to hug my mom. This is a beautiful love letter to our younger selves and it’s a must read babes!! All the stars once again!

I listened to this on audiobook, and thought the narrator did great. This had so many 13 Going on 30 vibes, but more of my generation growing up in the 90s! I absolutely loved going back to 2002 with Alexis. There was so much nostalgia with references to so many things, and who would have thought we went from using T9 predictive text messaging where each text was I think 10 cents or 25 cents, to what we have now. Basically a mini-computer that iPhone. 😆

I honestly laughed out loud at so many parts while listening to it, but then I freaking cried as well. This book really made me want to teleport back to my 18-year-old self and knock some sense into myself! Time-travel/alternate realities/universes aren't usually what I read, but this woman's fiction book was so worth listening to! This book also really makes you think about the decisions you make and how they affect your future. And you will be thinking of inspirational quotes that you used to say/write when you were 18.

Thank you @dreamscape_media and @netgalley for the #gifted audiobook ARC!⠀⠀

Cool switch book of a female going back in time to see if she could redo events from her past, while discovering if that’s truly what she wants.
