This book is BEAUTIFULLLY illustrated! I love that the pictures correspond with the sounds to help children make connections between the two. The lack of narrative may not appeal to all children but I think the illustrations are so captivating they will hold young readers attention.

Sue Fliess has written a variety of STEAM-themed books, and when I had the opportunity to view this beautiful e-arc from NetGalley, I was thrilled for the opportunity. The STEM features are more subtle in this text, as the focus is on sounds we hear in nature. At the end of the text, the author includes anatomical references to the parts of the ear and how sound enters the ear, as well as the vocal folds and how humans make speech. It did seem like it was meant for an older audience compared to the simple sentences in the text, however, my 4 year old was very interested to see "inside of an ear", so I think it was just the right amount of balance between science and art/nature.

This book shows sounds that are made by different animals and natural things all around the world. The illustrations are lush and vivid, and they were beautiful! I really enjoyed the sound words used and could see children wanting to repeat them and add extra special emphasis. I particularly enjoyed the cultural representation in this book and could imagine children finding themselves and their friends on these pages.

Another awesome thing about this book was the learning extension in the last few pages. The science of sound is fascinating and provides another way for the children reading this book to connect to the material. The volcano information was just icing on the cake. I'd happily add this to my classroom library.

What a delightfully illustrated book, I want to purchase several and hang them up. It had just enough words to keep a small child interested without taking away from the pictures. This will be added to my home library as soon as it’s available in print.

This book is a nice introduction to onomatopoeia and boasts gorgeous illustrations depicting children, families, and animals living in four different parts of the world. These illustrations are good for fostering conversations about these different areas and discussing similarities and differences between them.

I feel like different aspects will appeal to different ages/stages. If you are reading this aloud to a child, the rhyming parts may appeal more to a 2-or 3-year-old. They did not capture the attention of my Pre-K child, although he did like the illustrations—especially the ones of the volcano and the illustration of the avalanche.

If you have an emerging reader, he/she/they may enjoy reading the rhyming portion aloud to you and sounding out the words together.

If you have second or third grader, The Science of Sound portion at the end of the book may appeal to him/her/them. This section covers “What Is Sound,” “How Does the Heart Beat,” “How Do Animals Use Sound to Communicate,” and “What Makes a Volcano Erupt”. My second grader liked this entire section. My Pre-K child was interested in the illustrations of the ear and of the vocal cords in this section, and this opened up additional discussions about these body parts. The dense text of this section was too much to hold the Pre-K child's attention, though.

I received an electronic ARC from Lerner Publishing Group through NetGalley.
Fliess captures the sounds that surround us. With simple text, they let readers to hear these sounds through the word choices. The lovely artwork draws readers further in as they visualize the locations. This is one that works better as a read aloud. Families or classes can share together and take turns reading the sounds. Fliess also provides informative text about sound at the end of the story.

Beautifully illustrated! I love the minimalist wording that allows young readers to *imagine* all the sounds that they are seeing. I can see this as a wonderful interactive read aloud.

Beautiful illustrations that really bring the reader into the book and help them to feel the sounds they are describing. It shows so many different sounds from all over the world, and in the end ties all the children that were throughout the book together in a way to really show that sounds are everywhere and we all experience them. Love the couple pages of facts at the end. While it may be a bit advance for the younger age this book seems to be targeted for, it is great for the adults reading it to help explain some to them.

This is a beautiful book that explores the wonders of the sounds all around us. My children would love both sounds and the vibrant pictures. I’ve already added it to my wishlist to purchase when it’s released!

This book is illustrated SO BEAUTIFULLY. The book is teaching about sound using onomatopoeia, but I was just focusing on my sight sense the entire time because wow! The illustrator enables beautiful patterns and shapes to create a delightful visual experience. The point of the book, which is to take kids through a journey of sound (via book) was pretty simple and unremarkable through the book, but I really liked the ending where the author goes into more detail of how sound works in paragraph form!

This is a great book to introduce children to onomatopoeia. As an TEFL teacher, one of the fun time killers at the end of class was "in English a rooster sounds like "cock-a-doodle-doo", what sound does a rooster make in your language?" This would be a great book to accompany that. The illustrations were absolutely beautiful. This would be a fun bedtime story for children, also.

This is a great book to read aloud and discuss what makes the sounds in each picture. I think it would work well with lower elementary and any grade that learns about the science of sound. The illustrations are excellent although a few have some odd floral details that I wish has either not been used or had been continued throughout.

Thanks to Netgalley and Lerner Publishing Group, Millbrook Press for a free digital copy.

A masterfully illustrated book that encompasses the onomatopoeia of sound with a fun rhyming cadence. It celebrates the variety of sounds in various situations. I think it will be both an educational and fun read for children.

I've been getting into children's books more lately to read to my niece. She's still a bit young to fully grasp the words so lately I've been trying to find ones with more vivid imagery or a good cadence to the story because she'll respond to those even if she doesn't know what it means yet. We had so much fun reading this one tonight. I personally loved illustrations quite a bit and she loved swiping back and forth between the full color panels. What we had the most fun with though was both the rhyming scheme and the way the descriptions encouraged me to imitate the sounds the words described. She would laugh and smile as she'd swipe back and forth while I would roar and WHOOSH and squawk and make different sound effects. This was such a beautiful book but honestly, despite being an ebook we were able to make it fully interactive and I loved every minute. I look forward to adding a physical copy of this book to my little library for her so that we may read and experience every rumble and roar together again and again!

I love how this book makes connections around the world in something as simple as sounds. We loved reading this and talking about the sounds we hear throughout our day.

Rumble and Roar is a rhyming picture book that uses words and imagery to bring sounds to life. Sounds from all over the world and many different environments are represented. The illustrations are beautiful, charming, and detailed. This would make a great board book.

5 ⭐️ // Originally, Rumble and Roar caught my attention because of the beautiful book cover, and I was pleasantly surprised by this children’s book.

The main section of this book shares sounds heard around the world, and the end tells the science of sound and other related topics. Even as an adult, I learned more about how the ear works, and I especially enjoyed the “fun fact” bubbles. At first, I thought the book would be best for younger kids, but science section would be interesting for older kids as well.

The illustrations were muted but colorful, and the artist did a beautiful job of including diversity into the story. The pictures reminded me of an animal magnet set I bought from Anthropology, so I can easily see the book being sold there.

I would purchase this book for any child under 10 years old in my life.

Thank you for providing me an ARC copy of this book in exchange for my honest review, NetGalley.

Beautiful vivid illustrations and rhyming that is easy to follow. Pictures from all over the world are included taking kids to places they’ve never been. I loved that there’s an explanation of the science of sound at the end of the book. Highly recommend! Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to read this early!
