Widow Falls by Kiersten Modglin

Sloane takes a job at Widow Falls where she quickly learns the camp holds some secrets!

People go missing at Widow Falls. Where or what happens to them?

The guide she replaces is just one of the many who went missing. No one seems to care.

She can't help but ask questions and wonder what happened to the missing.

Sloane stumbles upon a clue and a secret message hidden beneath the floorboards of their loft.

Sloane is determined to figure out truth before her or someone else goes missing!!

A good listen! I was captivated the entire time, wanting to know what was going to happen. Didn't see that coming for the twist.

Thank you Kiersten Modglin, Dreamscape Media and NetGalley for the audio to listen to this book in return for my honest review!

I'm a little torn on this one. I enjoyed it and gave it 3.5 stars but there were a few things that bothered me and still do. I didn't like any of the characters for starters. They all acted like high school kids and just seemed off, which makes more sense towards the end of the book but I didn't enjoy it. I also wanted a lot more of the rafting to be included in the book but there was barely any. As for the setting we were pretty much stuck in a run down bunk style room with occasional trips outside. I really would have loved a lot more atmosphere from this one. I did enjoy the ending and I thought it was creative but overall it wasn't my favorite. I listened to the audio version and I felt that narrator did a great job, which really added to my enjoyment of the book.

*received for free from netgalley for honest review* pretty good, knew it would end somewhat like that pretty early on, but still pretty good overall

This is the first Modglin title for me, which led to subsequent requests for titles by this author. Sloane finds herself in a remote white water rafting camp, where she soon finds out she is replacing a missing woman. Immediately it's clear that something is off about the camp, and the reader is driven to figure out what that is.

The pivot point of the novel is predictable in nature as Modglin gave us enough hints along the way, however, where the reader will have their sweet epiphany, is on the very last page.

⭐️⭐️⭐️💫

I didn’t really love this one. I have enjoyed all of her other books, but not so much this one. It was still entertaining, I just felt like the dialogue was kind of cheesy and I found myself losing interest.
But, I still really enjoy this author and will continue to read all of her books!

I did love the narrator! @jessnahikian

Widow Falls
By Kiersten Modglin

Thank you to NetGalley and Dreamscape Media for the advanced copy in turn for an honest review.

Have you ever wanted to go white water rafting? Or better yet, be a white water rafting guide? Sloane thought it would be a good summer job after graduation, little did she know that people at Widow Falls keep disappearing. After she gets settled in in the bunkhouse she enjoyed the camaraderie between the other guides. But when she drops something down between the floor boards what she finds makes her start to question her choice to work there. Who can she trust?
Can she trust any of the other guides? Can she trust the owner who she has yet to meet? Is she in danger?

Again, thank you to NetGalley and Dreamscape media.

Such a brilliant book. I was totally hooked from the start. This book kept me turning the pages so fast to find out hear what going on. Brilliant.

I would categorize this book as YA/suspense as most of the characters are in their twenties and thirties. Widow Falls is an area drenched with folklore to entice and thrill visitors who come to tackle the river and the falls.
It's a good setting for a mystery, and includes a cast of employees who become Sloane's family as she is hired to replace one of the previous river guides (Landry) who went missing.
I felt it started a little slow, but stick with it, the story will pull you in to wonder what is really going on in this guiding camp where workers never leave, like a perpetual Peter Pan living in their secluded world. Sloane feels like an outcast from the get-go, and although you know something is off, that evil lurks within, it is difficult to put a finger on it... until the twisted, clever, right-to-the-last-chapter ending!
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me a copy of this audiobook that I think YA and suspense thriller readers will enjoy!

Widow Falls tells the story of Sloane, a girl that gets a job in a mysterious whitewater rafting camp where people seem to be disappearing. She is there to replace a girl that disappeared, and although she is assured she just went back home, she finds little clues that make her think otherwise. I ended up giving this book 2.5 stars rounded up to 3. It has been one of the best Kiersten Modglin books I have read so far, but I am not sure I would highly recommend it. This might just not be my type of author, but I still find myself wanting to give her another chance and see what the hype is about. The story has a spooky camp story feeling and had a really young vibe to it, which is not everyone's cup of tea (at least not mine). It is kind of weird that they are all adults, but all seem to think and act like teenagers. It is kind of annoying how the main character ignores so many red flags, but I still would have liked the ending if she omitted that last chapter. Although I have some issues with the plot, the writing does flow nicely, and it's not a long exhausting read.
While many love Modglin for being the "twist queen," I always end up feeling she forced one too many twists, and this is the best example of that. Like I said, it is one of the best books I have read by her, so if you are a Kiersten Modglin fan, you will probably enjoy this read, The ending completely ruined the book for me, and I wish Goodreads would allow for half stars because 3 stars don't feel too accurate, but it is not as bad as some of her other books. I really like her writing, just wish she didn't go that hard for unnecessary twists.

Review: Sloan signed a 2 year contract to work in Widow Falls as a guide. When she gets there, she feels like everyone is a little off. Then she finds the diary of the girl who she replaced & nothing good was written in there.

What is really going on? Who can be trusted? & How can you get away once you’ve discovered the truth?

Follow along & see if you can solve the mysteries of Widow Falls!

Got an advance audio copy from NetGalley for an honest review.

Kiersten Modglin never disappoints!

A young girl gets a summer job as a white water rafting guide. She comes in the middle of the season and finds out that the person she’s filling in went missing. Not knowing who to trust and strange things happening, this book keeps you wanting more! So hard to put down, I devoured this is one afternoon!

I LOVED at this book! The ending….. Wow!!!!!

Sloane takes a job at Widow Falls. It starts off well, she gets along with the other rafting instructors and enjoys the position, until she finds a journal and a photo detailing the summer of the worked who came before her. The journal tells an experience quite different from Sloane’s and claims that this version is the truth. Other concerning rumours float around and Sloane starts to question her safety in Widow Falls.

I was not a fan of this at all. The narrator wasn’t great, I don’t think the change of voices was successful, especially the male voices. It was quite cringey at times. The story was boring and dragged on and on, Sloane made stupid decisions and the end was really random and unbelievable. The story really was messy, it needed to be more clear and organized with one clear point. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the free preview in exchange for an honest review.

Unfortunately I only got to 15% of this one because I could not get past the robotic voice of the narrator. It was so hard to listen to.

This book kept me reading in spite of its flaws. Modglin begins building a sense of menace from the outset of the book so that the reader knows that there is something wrong, just not what that something is. When the main character, Sloane, tells us that she should have heard a voice in her head telling her to turn right around as she arrived at Widow Falls, there has not been enough of a build-up of suspense for the reader to actually feel her anxiety. As the book progresses, however, and strange things continue to happen, a sense of rushing toward some sort of disaster takes over and the book becomes hard to put down. There are several plot twists, some more predictable than others, and the final twist is satisfying. Some plot elements require suspension of disbelief, while others are just dropped, but the overall plot hangs together.

The premise of the book, which the reader doesn't discover until the end so it won't be discussed in this review, requires that essentially every character is unreliable. This results in characterization that is situational and inconsistent, separating the reader from the characters and causing some occasional disorientation. I'm not sure I bought the motivation of most of the characters, but if their reasons for their actions are taken at face value then those actions make sense.

The descriptions of the camp where Sloane is working, the town of Widow Falls, the oppressive weather, and the surrounding river and forest are some of the best writing in the book. The reader is effectively transported to the remote location. I listened to the audiobook and the reader did a great job of separating the voices of the characters, including accents where appropriate without taking these over the top. She also ratcheted up the suspense with her timing, adding to the "reading" experience.

Overall, this was a good diversion which kept my interest, but the issues with characterization kept it from being a fully immersive experience.

This was a good, quick book that keeps you guessing. I don’t think this was meant to be YA, but it kind of had that vibe to it - although the characters are all in their 20s and up. The book reminded me a little bit of Gone Girl and a little of Final Girls, but with a convoluted ending that I’m not sure if I even interpreted correctly, even after listening to it twice.

There’s nothing too original about this, but it was an entertaining read. I think it would have made more sense as being marketed as a YA book - the “twists” would have been more compelling if I hadn’t read all of the thrillers that have already used these plot devices.

Overall, I did like it and I will give this author another chance with future books.

Book Review: Widow Falls by Kiersten Modglin

Widow Falls is a mystery suspense thriller about a young woman that takes a job giving river rafting trips in a town with a haunted past. When she finds a journal left behind by the former employee who she replaced she begins to wonder if the water isn’t the only dangerous thing at widow falls.
Fresh out of college and an orphan Sloane is looking for a new opportunity when she finds the position as a rafting guide at Widow Falls. She’ll be replacing another woman (Landry Elliott) who left unexpectedly and no one talks about. Her job includes room and board for an additional $25 a week but no privacy or alone time. But things start to quickly go wrong. Her personal items are stolen out of her locker, fellow guides are hostile for no reason, Widow Falls has a dark reputation she wasn’t aware of and she discovers Landry’s hidden journal that makes it seem like her life was in danger when she left.
First off, for a “thriller” this was the slowest and most low-on-action book I’ve come across in that genre. Literally nothing happened for over thirty chapters. And it was both overly descriptive (including every meal and stupid game of truth or dare) but somehow also vague and hollow. The main character is the most vanilla, apologetic and weak cry baby you’ll ever come across. But her personality is also kept so vague and bland that I was kind of hoping she’d get murdered and the whole thing could end. As far as the mystery goes...I didn’t buy any of it. The entire explanation of what is really going on was convoluted and not believable at all and very unsatisfying.
This book was a total slog to get through, 2 stars ⭐️⭐️

Wow this author is quickly becoming a favorite. While this one wasn't as good as some of the others I read I still really enjoyed this story. It was mysterious without being to vague. I loved most of the characters. Some of them I wasn't the biggest fan of some of them but they didn't take me away from the story. I will continue to read from this author.

Such a fun and addictive story from my favorite author. I’ve already recommended it to all of my friends. It’s so dark and I read it in one sitting. With a twist I never saw coming, it’s a solid 5 star read!

Sloane takes a job as a white water rafting instructor to make some money. The other guys and girls seem nice enough and it just might be a fun way to earn some cash. When Sloane finds out about the girl who is missing, whose place she took, she can't help this nagging feeling that something's wrong. As time passes, you don't really know what's going on, only that something's going on, it's not good, and it's quite a fun trip for the reader discovering what that is. I will definitely look for more Kiersten Modglin books. #widowfalls
