A solid thriller with action and twists. I enjoyed the first book in the series, and this was about as good. Recommended for thriller fans.

I really appreciate the free review copy!!

I really, really wanted to like this book. The premise sounded amazing - international jewel thieves all trying to steal the same diamonds from each other. My mind was all Italian Job/Ocean's Eleven, but sadly what I got was one of those college textbooks that is so confusing that you start daydreaming and then you forgot what you were reading in the first place.

I came into this thinking it was a standalone. I had no idea that it was the third in a series. So I normally would never have requested this book to review in that case. Usually there's so much backstory that you just never get in later books when you start later in a series and you can't fully appreciate it. However, in this case I think the author attempted to insert both of the previous books into this one. There was too much backstory that I didn't know if the characters referred to were in the current story or a previous one.

And it was so confusing: The FBI would know about Jack because Bartolo would tell them because Jack's ex-girlfriend, Guilia, told Nico that Jack's friend Castro was a cop, Nico tried to kill Jack but Jack got away. When Nico did a heist he used Guilia to hide the diamonds and waited for Bartolo but he went to prison so she hooked up with Alksander. Alksander and Reginald were connected so Alksander got a lot of dirt on Jack from Reginald which meant Giulia knew it as well. Jack used his relationship with Guilia to get information from Bartolo, and then backed out of the relationship so Guilia told Bartolo everything she knew about Jack so Bartolo would kill Jack. All this information came out in 2 paragraphs and there are similar information bombs dropped heavily throughout the book. Shortly after this I gave up for the second time and this time for good.

Again amazing idea but the execution needs a lot of work, or maybe you just need to start at the beginning.

I would like to thank #NetGalley and Severn River Publishing for an opportunity to review this book in exchange for my honest opinion.

Once a Thief, the third book starring world-class thief Jack Burdette, has everything I like in a book: action, betrayals, plenty of twists and turns, and, of course, heists. Yet, after I finished I was indifferent to the book. Didnt love it nor hate it. I just couldn't get into it. I would put it down and start reading other books and would pick it back up after I finished a book. Perhaps if I had read the previous books (which I plan to do) I would have been more invested.

Thank you to Severn River Publishing and NetGalley for an advanced copy of Once a Thief.

I read the 1st book in this series and thought it promising but this was if the author thought he was being paid by the word - plodding plot, constant angst-ridden ruminations and redundant repetition of the backstory led me to give up caring about anything that happened. It might be passable at half the length with some vicious editing but then you would have to read the whole thing...

Talk about a twisted ride. This story was a never ending ride from start to finish.
I haven’t read the previous books in the series but now I know I will because I want to know more and see for myself how Jake got himself in trouble in the first place. And yes, I’m so rooting for the villain here.
My only complaint would be a bit of repetitive thoughts in the first half but it soon gets over it and I really enjoyed it overall.
This book was so twisted and suspenseful, it really kept me guessing til the end and I highly recommend it if you’re looking for a great rush of adrenaline.

Very grateful to the publisher for my review copy through NetGalley.

Gentleman Jack Burdette is trying to go straight, but old friends and enemies won’t let him. Book #3 in the series. If you love to read about heist thrillers and cat burglars, this is the book for you. Excellent writing with twists galore! I received an ARC from NetGalley, and the opinions expressed are my own.

Very good sequel. (Reading the previous stories is helpful). Lots of action, twists and turns, betrayals, and surprises.
