I haven't read much Chamberlain but always hear fantastic things. This book was told in a dual time line and both characters were so interesting. This made me want to start reading her books more often!

The Last Huse on the Street is another deliciously creepy mystery by Diane Chamberlain. The decades old mystery is about to be revealed by two unconnected women.

In the summer of 1965, Ellie Hockley, a pharmacology student, has decided to spend her summer helping people of color register to vote. Not only are her family and friends shocked; it's actually dangerous. During the summer, she meets her life partner, becomes estranged from her family, and moves away.

In 2010, Kayla Carter and her husband design and build their dream home. Shortly before completion, her husband is killed in a freak accident in the house. Shortly after, a strange woman visits Kayla in her office, warning Kayla not to move into the house.

The woods and lake behind the house are said to be haunted. After moving in, Kayla and her daughter experience a number of frightening incidents.

In the meantime, Ellie Hockley has moved home to care for her elderly mother and ailing brother. She and Kayla are on a collision course.

I would highly recommend this title to readers who enjoy psychological thrillers.

In the interest of full disclosure, I received a free digital audio copy of this title to review.

A dual timeline story that explores the SCOPE project and the Civil Rights Movement in North Carolina. Powerful, poignant, important.

Love the audio from this audiobook. This was my first book by this author. It definitely will not be my last. I cannot say how much this book drew me in from the beginning to the end. I couldn’t wait to see what was going to happen with the characters. Highly recommend it.

I absolutely loved this audiobook set in the Carolinas both in the 60s and present day. The book was very compelling, going back and forth in time between when the Freedom Fighters came to the south to help black people get the vote. There are some really horrific things that happen though, concerning the Kkk, so if that's a trigger stay away. I want to thank the author, the publisher, and Netgalley for giving me an advance copy of this audiobook, in return for an honest review.

This book is historical fictionl. Its about the Scope Project, which is interesting.. There are dual timelines. The timelines are 2010 and 1965. Diane Chamberlain is reliable as an author who consistently creates characters and stories that are good quality.

Floored! I absolutely loved this book…loved everything about it. I loved the varied timelines, loved the characters, loved the story line. And most certainly loved that it kept me guessing until the very end. I truly loved everything about this book and would highly recommend this to anyone interested in reading a thriller with a little history tied in!!!!

This mystery takes us back to the civil rights period in the 60s and the fight for racial justice. The novel comes off a little sanctimonious, and the mystery is just ok.

This was my first read by Diane Chamberlain - I have heard nothing but amazing things about this author and I can 100% understand why. Her writing style is so beautiful and lyrical in a way. Also, the way she wrote this story had me really connected to her style, I’ll need to pick up more from her!

I loved the North Carolina setting with a dual timeline and the characters felt so realistic therefore I felt a connection with them. I felt interested in both women’s perspectives.

I also really enjoyed the whole SCOPE program and the way it was shared. I loved the addition of this historic event and the info I took and learned from the story. It was an overall enjoyable and memorable read. The characters were so raw and real, and I felt like I was rooting for them. This is an author you should definitely read from at least once.

2010 What had been an exciting chapter in their lives changes into a sad step forward for Kayla Carter when her husband dies while building their dream house in Shadow Ridge Estates, Round Hill, North Carolina. Now Kayla and her four year old daughter are moving into the huge, finished home and Kayla feels dread and sadness rather than the excitement she would have felt if her husband was still alive. What had seemed like a happy place before, now seems closed in by the surrounding woods, too big, too full of memories, even though the place hasn't been lived in yet.
1965 The same location and Ellie is a young college student, ready to tackle the social ills of the time. The SCOPE project needs white volunteers to live with black families to help prepare them and their neighborhoods to get out and vote. Everyone in Ellie's family and community is against Ellie volunteering for this project but Ellie is not to be deterred despite being admonished that her joining the project is destroying her family, the family business, and the community. Ellie follows her heart when doing do isn't allowed and she and those dear to her pay the price.
I loved the dual timelines of this story. The 1965 story line was hard to read, but still so important in this day and age, I also learned a lot from this story. The themes of this book are systematic racism and oppression, a theme that America is still dealing with. The characters are will developed and I enjoyed both timelines.
The narrator of this audio book was fantastic and brought life to all the characters.

I was given an audio book galley from the publisher and NetGalley and all opinions are my own.

This book was not at all what I expected. It was better. It was definitely a thriller/mystery, but the ending was completely unexpected, horrible, sad, and something that everyone should read. I really loved this book!

Going into this story I was expecting more of a domestic thriller. It takes awhile before the the conflict and issues come to a head. The author spends quite a bit of time on Ellie’s story but I found myself more curious about Kayla. Though the author does a great job weaving dual timelines and points of view, there is not much interaction between Ellie and Kayla until the end.

My sincere thanks to NetGalley for my gifted copy! My thoughts are my own.

I received a copy of The Last House on the Street from the publisher through NetGalley. I’ve read many books written by Diane Chamberlain. Most are historical set in the south. This one follows similar patterns.

Dual timelines usually makes the book interesting. The 1965 story was excellent. The 2010 was ok with an ending that was predictable.

This book will please Diane Chamberlain fans. Imperial her next book will be an improvement on this. 3 stars.

Diane Chamberlain never disappoints. Tackling difficult subject matter, she writes with sensitivity and poise, and her intriguing storylines pull you in from the beginning. Beautiful writing, interesting settings and memorable characters make it easy to get lost in her stories.

The Last House on the Street is a dual timeline story that alternates between 2010 and 1965, and the setting is North Carolina. The historical details were well woven into the story accurately portraying the people and landscape of the turbulent 60’s, a time when racial issues, prejudice, and the struggle for social justice and equality for African Americans was at the forefront. Learning about the SCOPE project was interesting and added to the historical authenticity, but packed an emotional punch. Combining elements of historical fiction with the elements of a thriller, the timelines seamlessly merged, as each illuminated the other to unravel bits and pieces revealing a tragic mystery. Both storylines were brilliantly tied together and equally contributed to this compellingly emotional read.

Susan Bennett brilliantly narrates this powerful story.

Thank you to Macmillan Audio, NetGalley and the author for the opportunity to listen to this wonderful story in return for my honest review. All opinions are my own.

Thank you to the publisher for lending me the audio of this book in exchange for a review. This was an amazing story. This is the first book I read by this author and I will be picking up more titles.
The plot had me crying in so many places that it was impossible to read without having a Kleenex near by. I will definitely be recommending this book to others and checking out previous works.

Thank you Netgalley and Macmillan Audio for this advance listener copy in exchange for my honest review.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I'm going to start by saying that I thought this was a psychological thriller for some reason and it really wasn't. It was more of a family drama with a bit of mystery mixed in. I'm not sure why I thought it was a thriller, but I was pleasantly surprised how much I liked it.

The story was told in two alternating timelines, one being Ellie in 1965 and the other being Kayla in 2010. You know that the stories will intersect, but you just don't know when or how. Diane Chamberlain does a fantastic job with piecing it together slowly and making the reader go "ah-ha". Kayla's story almost has a supernatural mystery element to it. Someone is going to great lengths to stop her and her daughter from moving into a house they just had built. Kayla already has reservations about the new house after a tragedy occurs. Ellie is a civil rights worker in the south during the 60s for an organization known as SCOPE trying to register POC to vote. The two stories seem to have little in common, but the intersection of the two is a WOW moment. I won't give anything else away.

Four stars. Fantastic audio, gripping story! Highly recommended!
