Pig Beach BBQ Cookbook is a cookbook for barbecue novices and enthusiasts alike. The cookbook starts out with the all important recipes for sauces and rubs, and they are all ones that I would love to add to my recipe rotations. I liked the grill recipes, the ideas for sides, and oh my, that dessert chapter. I personally don't own a smoker, so those recipes weren't necessarily for me, but they are still recipes I would recommend to someone with a smoker. Pig Beach BBQ Cookbook is a great barbecue cookbook coming out just in time for summer.

Thanks to Netgalley and William Morrow for this ARC; this is my honest and voluntary review.

This cookbook is loaded with recipes. There are not a lot of pictures, but the pictures that are included are very well done. The book includes the author’s cooking biography and how the restaurant Pig Beach in New York came to be. The recipe section includes BBQ Bits and Pieces which can range from describing an ingredient to the history of the recipe. There is a section on barbecue history and barbecue basics. At the end of the book is a section on meeting the “cooking family” with information on where to find some of the chefs at restaurants.

Recipe sections include:

The Heart of Barbecue: Signature rubs, Seasonings, Sauces, & Marinades
Core Barbecue
Fun With Ribs
Signature Grills
Beyond Barbecue
Sides, Sandwiches & Snacks
After the Meat You Gotta Have Sweets
Barbecue Time is Cocktail Time

For this review, I decided to make Italian Sausage with Jeff’s Pepps. The recipe does include making your own Italian sausages, but I opted for quick and easy with store bought. The Pepps recipes was easy to follow, quick to make, and added a ton of flavor to the Italian sausage. 5 stars all the way.

The Pacific Northwest is not exactly known for BBQ, so I was really excited to pick up this read and learn more about a cuisine I love to eat (when someone else makes it). I fully expected to learn a ton, and boy, did I!

From an overview of regional BBQ styles and differences, to how to make one's own smoker (can't say I'll do it #apartmentlife, but how cool!), to tips/tricks and the vocabulary that makes BBQ all its own, this book has everything. And oh boy, the photography--wow!

Maybe best not to read on an empty stomach, because I'm officially starving (and it's not even 9am as I type this). :D

The rubs and sauces are most accessible and notable for me (again, #apartmentlife), and I appreciate how so many use everyday pantry ingredients--no need to find a niche or high-end store! And I'll freely admit, the Bobby Flay fangirl in me geeked out seeing the gochujang buttermilk ranch dressing; I only know what _gochugang_ is thanks to BFlay. :D

Many of the protein-based recipes do depend on a smoker, so I'll confess that at the mo', they aren't high on my list to attempt at home. (Do I have any friends with a smoker who wanna collab? :D) But, that's not for lack of taste/desire/appeal--solely logistics! The authors do note how to use a kettle grill in lieu of a smoker--something to consider when I also have a yard (and a kettle grill, heh). So, there are options, for sure; I'd love to see even a small shoutout for those of us not there yet (but I'm sure I'm in the minority of the target audience; I love to eat BBQ, even if I'm not in a spot to make it as intended).

I love that the authors get creative in their recipes, even including some vegetarian options, seafood (oysters), and a whole "beyond barbecue" section with all sorts of unique recipes. (Lasagna! Cod! Gnocchi! Mmm...gnocchi.) I'd also be super curious to compare their "legendary baked beans" (their words) with my grandma's--which is already legendary in my book! Which would win? We shall see! And oh man, the desserts. I am entirely drooling over the key lime pie and chocolate-pecan bars, not to mention the s'mores treats and peach-blueberry cobbler (which I think is a must-try this summer!).

I particularly love this cookbook because there's enough there that even the biggest non-BBQ-smokers among us (like myself) could make and enjoy. A winner!

4/5 stars.

I received an eARC of the book from the publisher. All opinions are my own.

This book will make the perfect gift for Father's Day or for any occasion. There is so much to this book, like meeting the chefs, learning how they got started and made it successful, to getting down to learning about barbecuing, and all the amazing recipes that are included. It opens a whole new world to people who want to barbecue.
As I was reading the book, what I enjoyed most is these are 5-star chef, who wants to share their love of barbecue, the flavors, the recipes, the techniques, so others can do barbecues they have dreamed of.
But, it goes beyond barbecues, it has the sides, pickles, drinks, and the desserts. It has everything they will need, all in this one book.
I received an ARC from Mariner Books through NetGalley, and I have preordered books to give as gifts.

I didn’t actually request this cookbook because I love cooking but I don’t have a smoker. When it’s a BBQ cookbook I know it might rely heavily, or entirely, on a smoker. But I was emailed a widget for the ebook and then I couldn’t resist checking it out. This book is mostly recipes using the smoker but not entireLy. After 136 pages of mostly smoker recipes there is a grilling section. I’m glad it covers both!
I should also mention that even if the cookbook had been entirely for a smoker that the spice rub and bbq sauce recipes are delicious sounding options to try. They caught my eye right off the bat.
There aren’t a ton of pictures in this cookbook but it’s quality over quantity because the pictures are gorgeous and vibrant! Very eye catching and makes me want to try the food.
There’s also a nice variety between different types of proteins to bbq, some meat free mains and sides too.
Then the cookbook includes a section on non bbq dishes.
Everything looks delicious in this cookbook. It definitely makes me want to do some grilling, thanks NetGalley for sending this to me.

If you like anything pork related smoked or bbq'ed this is the book for your library. Perfect gift for father's day I'd say since it's right around the corner! Needs more photos in my opinion but love the variety of recipes.

You might be wondering what do a bunch of boys from New York City know about BBQ? The kind of BBQ that is near cult status in the south of this country? After reading Matt Abdoo and Shane McBride's Pig Beach BBQ Cookbook, I'd say they know plenty.

They first give us a history and geography lesson on the differing types of BBQ found in the States. If you're a lover of BBQ, this is really quite interesting. With an overview of smokers, we finally get to the meat of this book, the actual meat. And their amazing recipes.

Drawing on the rich heritage of traditional BBQ, as well as the melting pot of flavors found in New York, Abdoo and McBride offer an abundance of flavorful rubs and sauces. They are truly worth the price of admission.

And though the sizes of the meat being cooked in their recipes may be intimidating to some, don't let it be. BBQ is all about temperature and timing. Smoke something smaller, just hit those temperature marks and you'll be fine. And it's not all about the meat, there are fantastic sides and even desserts to go with your meat masterpiece.

If you are an old hand at traditional BBQ, or looking to jump in, here's the place to start. Unabashedly bold, and flavor forward, Pig Beach won't lead you astray

This is a cookbook for serious BBQ cooks. The recipes, especially for BBQ are very detailed, and many of them are for larger quantities than most home cooks will want to do.

I am so excited for this book! The backstory of the two grill masters and their styles is a great foundation. These two men are very talented and have earned the right to show the rest of is how make great BBQ. That being said, what constitutes BBQ is hotly debated, depending on where you live, and they provide an excellent explanation of all the styles from various regions. I appreciated that they share all styles and types in this book. The techniques, explanations and photos are critical to learning the proper way to ensure excellent BBQ. I love all the spices, rubs, recipes, and methods that are shared from their combined learned experiences and successes. The section title Beyond Barbeque was a pleasant surprise. Here are treasures such as sauces, gravies, pastas, and more. Of course, you can’t have phenomenal BBQ without great sides to showcase and highlight flavors and there are some great ones included. And not to be excluded, there are mouthwatering desserts and beverages included as well. There are tips and tricks sprinkled all throughout the book, so even if you are looking for specific recipes, treat yourself to reading from cover to cover to see what all is included. I would like to extend my thank you for the extra bonus of how to find their pitmaster friends, broken down by state and location. This treasure trove of all things BBQ will absolutely be gifted to those I know who know and appreciate good BBQ.
